02. INTRODUCTION

Electrode
An electrode is an electrical conductor used to make contact with a nonmetallic part
of a circuit (e.g. a semiconductor, an electrolyte, a vacuum or air). The word was coined
by William
Whewell at
the
request
of
the
scientist Michael
Faraday from
the Greek words elektron, meaning amber (from which the word electricity is derived),
and hodos, a way.

Anode and cathode in electrochemical cells

An electrode in an electrochemical cell is referred to as either an anode or a cathode (words
that were coined by William Whewell at Faraday's request). The anode is now defined as the
electrode at which electrons leave the cell and oxidation occurs, and the cathode as the
electrode at which electrons enter the cell and reduction occurs. Each electrode may become
either the anode or the cathode depending on the direction of current through the cell. A
bipolar electrode is an electrode that functions as the anode of one cell and the cathode of
another cell.

Primary cell
A primary cell is a special type of electrochemical cell in which the reaction cannot be
reversed, and the identities of the anode and cathode are therefore fixed. The anode is
always the negative electrode. The cell can be discharged but not recharged.
Secondary cell
A secondary cell, for example a rechargeable battery, is a cell in which the chemical
reactions are reversible. When the cell is being charged, the anode becomes the positive (+)
and the cathode the negative () electrode. This is also the case in an electrolytic cell. When

the cell is being discharged, it behaves like a primary cell, with the anode as the negative
and the cathode as the positive electrode.
Other anodes and cathodes
In a vacuum tube or a semiconductor having polarity (diodes, electrolytic capacitors) the
anode is the positive (+) electrode and the cathode the negative (). The electrons enter the
device through the cathode and exit the device through the anode. Many devices have other
electrodes to control operation, e.g., base, gate, control grid.
In a three-electrode cell, a counter electrode, also called an auxiliary electrode, is used only
to make a connection to the electrolyte so that a current can be applied to the working
electrode. The counter electrode is usually made of an inert material, such as a noble
metal or graphite, to keep it from dissolving.
Welding electrodes
In arc welding an electrode is used to conduct current through a workpiece to fuse two
pieces together. Depending upon the process, the electrode is either consumable, in the
case of gas metal arc welding or shielded metal arc welding, or non-consumable, such as
in gas tungsten arc welding. For a direct current system the weld rod or stick may be a
cathode for a filling type weld or an anode for other welding processes. For an alternating
current arc welder the welding electrode would not be considered an anode or cathode.
Alternating current electrodes
For electrical systems which use alternating current the electrodes are the connections from
the circuitry to the object to be acted upon by the electric current but are not designated
anode or cathode because the direction of flow of the electrons changes periodically, usually
many times per second.
Uses
Electrodes are used to provide current through nonmetal objects to alter them in numerous
ways and to measure conductivity for numerous purposes. Examples include:

Electrodes for fuel cells

Electrodes
for
medical
purposes,
such
as EEG (for
recording
activity), ECG (recording heart
beats), ECT (electrical
stimulation), defibrillator (recording and delivering cardiac stimulation)

07. RAW MATERIALS

The raw material used in the process of manufacturing of Welding Electrodes is

Mild Steel Wire and Borax.
08. MARKETING
The India welding consumables market is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 5.60% from 2014 to
2020. The markets value as recorded in 2013 was INR30.8 bn. The overall value of the India
welding consumables market is expected to reach INR45.3 bn by the end of 2020. By
volume, the India welding consumables market stood at 255.1 kilo tons in 2013.
The India welding consumables market is segmented according to product type and
application. Among product segments, the India welding consumables market in 2013 was
dominated by welding stick electrodes. It held over 45.0% of the market in 2013. The report
then explains how the demand for wires and fluxes is expected to increase in the near future
due to the advantages that they possess.
The key driver of the India welding consumables market is expected to be the growth of its
end-use industries, especially the building and construction industry. Other drivers include
increasing investment in the oil and gas as well as energy sectors. The report also focuses
on restraints on the India welding consumables market, such as volatility in raw material
supply, advent of international competitors, and a lack of skilled labor.
Welding stick electrodes dominated the welding consumables market in India with more than
45% share in 2013. Stick electrodes are primarily used in manual welding and are a low cost
alternative to other types of welding consumables products. However, demand for wires and
fluxes are anticipated to rise significantly during the forecast period due to their efficient
performance. Factors such as lower wastage, suitability for automatic welding systems and
outdoor work, higher productivity and wide usage among different welding technologies are
likely to lead to increasing preference for solid and flux cored wires. The SAW wires and
fluxes segment is projected to witness moderate growth, accounting for more than 7% share
of the market in 2020. In terms of revenue, flux cored wires is anticipated to be the fastest
growing product segment during the forecast period.
Growth in end-use industries (including transportation, and building & construction) is
estimated to be the key factor driving the welding consumables market in India. Furthermore,
increase in investments in energy and oil & gas sectors is anticipated to boost the welding
consumables market in India. Automobile and transportation sector witnessed the largest
application of welding consumables with more than 25% share in 2013. Power sector is likely
to be the fastest growing segment, expanding at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period

from 2014 to 2020. Other applications such as wear plates and marine applications are
projected to grow moderately in the next few years.

09. MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Wires of different chemical compositions and sizes are obtained from different steel
manufacturers. In electrode making plant, they are chemically cleaned, cut to different lengths (30 the
selling prices of welding electrodes vary according to length of the electrodes and the raw material
used.
There are two methods of applying Flux coating on the core wire, (a) by dipping, (b) by extrusion.
Extrusion method is very fast and economical; produces strong uniform and concentric coatings and
has largely replaced the dipping process.
(a) Dipping method. Number of core wires cut to definite length is clamped vertically in a fixture and
are dipped in a bath of molten flux. When a suitable thickness of the flux gets adhered to the core
wire, the fixture is raised and the flux is allowed to dry.
(b) Extrusion process. Coating ingredients as discussed earlier are mixed up in desired quantities,
binder (often sodium silicate) is added and the resultant mass is brought in the form of a thick,
viscous, stiff paste. This paste is shaped in the form of a cylinder which is fed into the extrusion press.
Core wire and thick paste of flux simultaneously under pressure pass through a die, thus attaching
the flux coating on the core wire. The coating thickness depends upon the die opening and can be
varied. As a next step the flux from the gripping end of the electrode is removed by an electrically
rotated wire brush; after which the electrodes are fed to ovens where they are dried and baked to
remove excess moisture.
The electrodes are thereafter sorted, wrapped in polythene paper, put into packets, and bulk is boxed
into wooden cases. Packets and boxes generally have information about: electrode coding, electrode
size, nature of current and polarity, batch number, name of manufacturer, date of manufacture, etc.
