Meeting of June and Martin with PASE (Profesionales para la Auditoria

Social y Empresarial / Professionals for Social and Business Auditing)

Tuesday 4th October 2016, PASE Office, Chinandega.
June and Martin had yet another very good meeting with people from another really good
cause. Some of the issues associated with the CKDnT epidemic in western Nicaragua were
covered in the last edition of the SRF Newsletter, so we refer the trustees back to that. On this
occasion, we met with the following people.

Alberto Legall Lpez Coordinator of PASE.

Josephine Weinberg International consultant with the La Isla Foundation project and
Georgetown University, Washington DC.
Natalia Petrucci Visiting intern from UCLA, California, working with PASE for 4
months.
Edilberta Gmez Coordinator of Clnica Xochilt (El Viejo). Edilberta works as a
crucial contact for PASE as she has on the ground contacts in the plantations because
of her years working on banana plantations.
Tamara part-time office worker.

After introductions, Alberto and Josephine introduced and summarised the major issues faced
by the sugar cane workers and the means by which PASE tries to assist them in getting their
rightful social security or pensions when they are dismissed for being ill. They also assist the
families of workers who die from CKDnT. They then went through a Powerpoint presentation
to explain in greater detail why and how they work as they do. There then followed an
informal discussion between all participants.
During the informal discussions we lowered the expectations of the PASE personnel
regarding the possibility of SRF financing, but we both came out of the meeting feeling
certain that this is a cause that is appropriate for SRF funding and one that is well worth
supporting. We recommend that if the SRF finances allow, we should allocate funding for at
least the publication of 200 more manuals as per the application already received and
distributed.
