(Level 0+)
LESSON TITLE: Family Values and Traditions 1
DOMAIN: Family and Kinship
TIME: 2 Hrs.
METHOD: Contextualized interactive communication, culturally
embedded content, guided discussion, application with feedback.
LESSON REFERENCES: Find lesson references and at the end of
document and under the Lesson Plan tab of the class homeroom.
AUDIO/VISUAL INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS:
1. PowerPoint - to present new vocabulary, phrases and grammar rules.
2. Whiteboard - to explain and illustrate key points.
3. Authentic Materials [list all materials used in class.]
STUDENT PREPARATION: Students should check for assignments on the
eMentor homeroom webpage and prepare them before the next class.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME: Understand Family Values and
Traditions in TC and appreciate how they are practiced.

2. Apply knowledge and language skills to real-life settings.

LESSON OUTLINE
CONTENT
INTRODUCTION & REVIEW:
Review homework for todays lesson and discuss any
questions; recall prior learning that is useful to help
students acquire the new content; begin with grabbing the
students attention with something interesting yet relevant
to the lessons topic, followed by an explanation of the
learning objectives.
PRESENTATION:
Introduce new material and use interactive activities and
other learning aids to improve comprehension and
appreciation.
Suggested activities:
Present key vocabulary of the corresponding semantic field
(see vocabulary list below) by showing students pictures of
families during various situations in TC with their
corresponding descriptions; and/or by showing video clips
of family values and traditions and explaining the details
and the cultural aspects in English; and/or by reading
sentence-long excerpts from articles talking about family
values and traditions in the TC; and/or by showing the
results of some research in a chart that describes what
kind of family values and traditions people in TC think are
important (e.g. family, wedding etc.); and/or if applicable,
introduce or review a grammatical or lexical feature that is
relevant to the material and likely to occur in the context
of the topic.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
Provide opportunities for the students to drill on new
learning and commit it to memory. Provide timely
feedback.
Suggested activities:
Students watch a video of a TC family during a traditional
celebration or situation (e.g., wedding, Christmas party)
and identify the event (provide a word list) then students
answer comprehension questions and list the components
of the traditions they learned about; and/or students read
several sentence-long expressions about the family values
and traditions and ask students to identify true/false
statements using the information given in application;
and/or students read brief descriptions of the types of
family values and/or family traditions and ask students to
match the descriptions with the name/title of the family
tradition or value; and/or students look at pictures of
traditions and write an outline for each.
BREAK
APPLICATION:
Allow the students to apply the new knowledge and skills
to new situations. Provide timely feedback.

Suggested activities:
Students explain in English important family values and
traditions among TCs families and how these values are
practiced; and/or students share their own family values and
traditions; and/or students present (in English) the similarities and/or
differences between their own family values/traditions and those found in
the TC.
FEEDBACK & CONCLUSION:
Determine whether the learning objectives are achieved,
where the gaps may be, and how to bridge the gaps.
Suggested activities:
Students briefly summarize what they have learned in the
lesson; identify need for more work on the lessons topic
by asking students for feedback and address any
questions students may have; provide constructive,
positive feedback for students according to their
performance in the assimilation phase; assign homework
for next lesson; conclude the lesson and give a sneak peak
