Local Control
The pre selection of operation position is effected by a selector switch at the local
control desk.
A local control desk nearby the MF lance will be installed for the operation of lance
lifting/lowering in case of lance changing procedures. From the local control desks
operation in manual mode is possible. In local mode operation of the seal protection
and inflatable seal is possible. Before lifting or lowering of the lance the inflatable
seal must be deflated.
All through the RH- Vessel pressure conditions are less than 950 mbar, lifting is allowed until park position only and the lance must be forced to stop in park position.
In case the RH-Vessel pressure is above 950 mbar, lifting is allowed above park
position also.
However, between park position and upper position the lifting speed is limited to
slow speed.
By switching the selector switch LOCAL REMOTE at the local control desk in
position REMOTE , the remote control position is pre selected for operation.
Pre selection of remote control position will be indicated in the operation screens
MF LANCE OXYGEN BLOWING and MF LANCE BURNER OPERATION in
clear text.
By switching the selector switch LOCAL REMOTE at the local control desk in
position LOCAL , the local control position is selected for operation.
Pre selection of local control position will be indicated in the operation screens
MF LANCE OXYGEN BLOWING and MF LANCE BURNER OPERATION in
clear text in clear text and by signal lamp CONTROL ON at the local control desk
=.LCD01.
Remark
MF = multi functional
The local control position will be used only for MF lance exchange and for testing.

2.2

Burner Operation
For burner operation the vacuum system will be disconnected from the RH vessel
system by using the vacuum shut off valve. The waste gases leave the vessel via
the snorkels in order to achieve good temperature in the lower part of the vessel.
During the entire burner operation sequence nitrogen is purged into the gas cooler
in order to avoid condensation of the vapour of the waste gas.
For burner operation the following set points will be placed in tables with 9 steps.
These steps can be used as well as manual keyed in set points in case of Set
point-Mode:
3

Heating gas rate (Nm /h)

Lance position (cm)
Total step time (h:min)
The above mentioned set point table will be developed and set after practical experience with the plant. The introduction of set point values will be done in general
once during commissioning. The vessel heating process is mainly used to bring the
RH-Vessel on temperature for treatment or hold it there. If skull removal is activated, the process is similar to the heating process.
However, the lance will be moved stepwise down and upwards in the area skull is
suspected, in order to melt the Skull.

2.2.1

Selection of Set Point Tables

Before burner operation can be started, the operator must select between four (4)
heating tables or Set point-Mode on screen.
If one of the four tables is selected, the set points of table step no. 1 will be loaded
into the dedicated set point windows on screen. In case of Set point-Mode this set

JINDAL Steel,
MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

point windows for heating gas (Nm3/h), lance position (cm) and ratio will be released for manual inputs.
While the burner operation is started, a changing from one to one other set point
table, as well as changing set points within one set point table is prohibited.
However, the changing from Table-Mode to Set point-Mode is possible. The last
loaded set points inside the set point windows will be maintained until they are
changed by operator manually.
For the burner operation the operator is able to select three different set point tables
(no. 1 3) which are stored in the Operation and Monitoring system (HMI). Each set
point table includes set points for nine operation steps. Each operation step includes the following process data:
-

Heating gas flow rate (Nm3/h)

Ratio Gas/Oxygen

Lance operation position ( cm)

Step time (H:MM)

Soft key TABLE 1

By actuating the soft key TABLE 1, set point table 1 is selected for burner operation.
The selected set point table 1 is indicated in operation screen MF LANCE
BURNER OPERATION by colour change of soft key.
Soft key TABLE 2
As described under table 1
Soft key TABLE 3

2.2.3

Soft key BURNER OPERATION SEQUENCE START

By actuating the soft key BURNER OPERATION SEQUENCE START the burner
sequence will starts, provided that the following preconditions are fulfilled:
- The push button EMERGENCY STOP at the main desk is not actuated.
- The push button EMERGENCY STOP at the local control desk =.LCD01 is
not actuated.
- Remote control for the MF lance is pre selected at local control desk =.LCD01
- The MF lance is in parking position (signal from stroke measurement MF
lance =.04801.CG01).
- The machine cooling water flow for the MF lance is available,
-

No fault signal from diff. flow control system FIT0232 / FIT0602 (see chapter
Machine Cooling Water System).

The main vacuum valve (XV20003) is closed (signal from limit switch)

the oxygen pressure is in the normal range(PIT1509)

the heating gas pressure is in the normal range(PIT1706)

The vacuum pressure inside the connected vessel is > 950 mbar.

The nitrogen purging valves gas cooler (XV13044 and XV13045) are open or
AUTOMATIC MODE for the purging gas is pre selected

The gas cooler discharge flap is closed (XV12092)

Alloying vacuum lock is closed

Signal main burner ready for operation from burner control unit is on

Signal Ignition burner local operation on from burner control unit is off

No fault signal Main burner fault from burner control unit is available

In case the RH vessel temperature is less than 800C (will be detected by 2 independent thermocouples) the vessel has to be purged prior to start of the burner se-

JINDAL Steel,
MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

quence. This will be done by flushing the system with nitrogen via the nitrogen
flooding valves (XV13046 and XV13048).
In this case on the screen the message VESSEL PURGING REQUIRED will be
displayed. Afterwards the purge sequence starts automatically and the message
VESSEL PURGING RUNNING will be displayed. During vessel purging the nitrogen flow is supervised via PLC. Is the purging time expired the message VESSEL
PURGING FINISHED will be displayed on the screen and the burner sequence
starts to run. At any time the operator can stop and restart manually the vessel
purging. In this case if the purging time was to short the burner sequence remains
disabled.
After purging at first the lance will be automatically lowered into the treatment position (refer to MF lance lifting / lowering). At first, the inflatable seal valve (XY13066)
will be energized (opened). If the inflatable seal is open (min. pressure signal from
pressure switch (PSA1335), the MF lance moving drive will be switched on in lowering direction in high speed. When the MF lance reach the position: set point lance
position (cm) + 20 cm, the MF lance speed will be reduced to low speed. If the MF
lance reach the set point lance position (signal from stroke measurement MF lance
=.04801.CG01), the MF lance moving drive (=.04801.MM01-EM01) is switched off
and the inflatable seal valve (XY13066) will de - energized (closed). When the lance
is in treatment position and above preconditions are fulfilled, the output START is
set to the burner control unit (=.04801.ZA01).
In case that the vessel temperature is >800C the lance will be lowered immediately
into the treatment position and when the above preconditions are fulfilled, the output
START is set to the burner control unit (=.04801.ZA01).
With the start signal at first the purging of multi function lance is started, controlled
by burner control unit. After purging and if ignition gas and ignition air pressures are
available, the ignition burner will be started by the burner control unit.
The ready preconditions for ignition will be signalised by the signal ignition burner
ready for operation and will be indicated on the screen. In case of fault the corresponding RESET button must be operated.
With the start signal to burner control unit the control valves for Heating gas and
Oxygen valves (FCV17017 and FCV15022) will be driven into ignition position by
PLC and the nitrogen purging valves gas cooler will be energized (opened), provided automatic mode is pre selected for the purging gas valve.
If the burner control unit identifies the ignition flame then the signal Ignition burner
running will be set. In case of ignition flame failure then the signal Ignition burner

fault will be set and indicated on the screen. In case of fault the corresponding
RESET button must be operated and the ignition procedure will be repeated.
If ignition burner is on and that the following preconditions are fulfilled:
- The oxygen pressure is available (signal from pressure switch PS1508)
- The heating pressure is available (signal from pressure switch PS1704)
- The heating pressure is not too high (signal from pressure switch PS1705)
The burner control unit (=.04801.ZA01) will open the heating gas and oxygen supply
valves:
- Heating gas relief valve (XV17016) will be energized (closed)
- Heating gas first valve (XV17018) will be energized (opened)
- Heating gas second valve (XV17018) will be energized (opened)
- Oxygen gas relief valve (XV15021) will be energized (closed)
- Oxygen gas first valve (XV15023) will be energized (opened)
- Oxygen gas second valve (XV15024) will be energized (opened
After the main burner flame is recognised by the burner control unit, the ignition
burner will be switched off time delayed and the signal Main burner running will be
set. Is after some further time the main burner flame stabilised, a signal (ratio control release) will be send to PLC control system to release the control valves from
ignition position and set point control can start.
This set points will be carefully trailed (slope function), in order to prevent oscillation
of the control value.
Is the main flame not recognised then the signal Main burner fault will be set and
the oxygen and heating gas valves are de energised by burner control unit. The
PLC will reset the start signal. Afterwards the lance is lifted to the parking position.
Remark
To prevent incorrect valve position of the oxygen and heating gas supply valves, the
PLC has to check the actual position of these valves. The following valve position
combinations are correct:
Oxygen valves
1. Combination
Oxygen relief valve is closed
Oxygen first valve is open
Oxygen second valve is open
2. Combination
Oxygen relief valve is open

JINDAL Steel,
MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

The following process conditions will stop the burner operation:
the push button EMERGENCY STOP at the main desk is actuated
the push button EMERGENCY STOP at the local control desk LCD01 is actuated
the local control desk LCD01 for lance operation is on local
the machine cooling water flow is deviated from normal
the machine cooling water differential flow is critical
the Nitrogen purging gas flow to gas cooler is low (> 30 sec)
The after start sequence is finished no flame of main burner is recognised.
The Heating gas/Oxygen ratio deviated >+/- 10% from set point (after 30 sec.)

2.2.7

Vessel purging
In case the RH vessel temperature is less than 800C (will be detected by 2 independent thermocouples TT2001 and TT2002) the vessel has to be purged prior to
start of the burner sequence. This will be done by flushing the system with nitrogen
via the nitrogen flooding valves (XV13046 and XV13048). In this case on the screen
the message VESSEL PURGING REQUIRED will be displayed. Afterwards the
purge sequence starts automatically and the message VESSEL PURGING
RUNNING will be displayed. During vessel purging the nitrogen flow is supervised
via flow monitor (FITxxxx). If the flow monitor detects purging gas flow then the
purging gas timer starts to run. Is the purging time expired the message VESSEL
PURGING FINISHED will be displayed on the screen and the burner sequence
starts to run. At any time the operator can stop and restart manually the vessel
purging.
In case that the operator stops the purging and if the purging time was to short the
burner sequence remains disabled. The purging can be restarted with key Vessel
purging start.

Due to safety reason this failure can only reset from the local panel at the valve station itself (The operator has to inspect the valve station before he reset the failure).
-Ratio control release
if the main burner is started and the flame stabilising phase is finished the signal will
be set. If the signal is set the ratio controller (in the PLC) can start.
-Main burner fault

-Purging
before the ignition burner started, the ignition burner lance has to be purged. This
will be controlled by the burner control unit itself. However, this purging will be used
also during a vacuum treatment to prevent a clogging of the ignition burner (p (abs.)
<950 mbar.
-Release local mode
this is an interlock signal which cover the lance position lance in upper position.
Due to safety reason the ignition burner can only start from the local control panel if
the lance is in the vessel changing position.
-Start burner control unit
Start the complete burner sequence like purging the ignition burner, start the ignition burner, start the main burner, stop the ignition burner, and get the release for
the ratio controlling.

Due to safety reasons the burner control unit have to be integrated in the loop of the
transmitter. The PLC should supply the power for the loop.

2.2.9

Ratio control in the PLC

The heating gas/oxygen ratio is monitored during the entire heating sequence.
By the following cases the burner has to be stopped:

The strchometric ratio is lower than 5,6 for more than 30 s.

The oxygen flow is 20 % higher in relation to the strchometric ratio for more
than 30 s.

Due to safety reasons the ratio will be additionally monitored by the burner control.
To prevent an operation with a strchometric ratio lower than 5,6 in all cases ( also
by increasing and decreasing of the set point ) the set point generator must realised
as cross over controller.
That means that by increasing of the power the oxygen flow is the master and according the actual oxygen flow the heating gas flow will follow as slave.
If the power is decreasing the heating gas flow is the master and according the actual heating gas flow the oxygen gas flow will follow as slave.

Additionally the power set point changing speed will be limited to a rate of 100 % /
30 s.

MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

Oxygen Blowing
Oxygen blowing will be done for forced decarburisation. Prior to the oxygen blowing
for forced decarburisation the operator enters set points for the lance position and
the amount of oxygen to be blown. At the time when oxygen shall be blown onto the
melt the operator starts the blowing sequence. When the correct vacuum in the
vessel is achieved the lance will be automatically lowered into the treatment position
and the oxygen blowing process starts subsequently. After the total amount of oxygen is blown onto the melt then the MF lance will be lifted into the park position. The
operator can also stop the oxygen blowing sequence in between if necessary.
After the oxygen blowing sequence is started, the oxygen shut-off valve opens and
the lance lowers into the blowing position. The lance stay in the selected treatment
position (can be changed during the vacuum treatment) till the oxygen amount is
reached. At this time (or the operator stopped the process) the lance drive in park
position.
If the lance has reached the park position (or 20 s after the command lance drive in
park position if due to some malfunction the lance is not be able to reach the park
position ) the oxygen shut-off valve will be closed and parallel the protection gas will
be opened.

Protection gas
Protection gas to the MF lance is required when a vacuum treatment is performed in
the RH vessel. The operator can select either nitrogen or Argon as protection gas.
The protection gas flow is automatically started, when the pressure in the RH vessel
becomes less than a certain value (< 950 mbar).
The flow rate will be measured and indicated on the screen. Furthermore an alarm
will be displayed in case of low flow. After the oxygen blowing starts the protection
gas supply will be stopped in parallel to the opening of the oxygen valve. When this
sequence is finished the protection gas supply is restarted until the vacuum treatment is finished (> 950 mbar and time delay of 1 min).
Protection gas is also used to purge the heating gas line to the lance and the lance
itself after vessel heating. After the heating sequence is stopped the protection gas
supply will be open for 1 min in order to blow out the heating gas.
Protection gas valve close
With the request protection gas valve close the selected MF lance gas valve
(XV14066 or XV13217) and the MF lance protection gas valve (XV13225) will be de
- energized (closed) and the relief protection gas valve (XV13224) will be energized
(open).
Protection gas valve open

Machine cooling water

To protect certain plant parts as well as seals from destruction by thermal influences
these parts are cooled with machine cooling water.
The machine cooling water is fed to and returned from the individual parts via pipe
work, manifolds and hoses.
The supply pressure and temperature will be monitored and indicated on the control
system.
With actuating Machine Cooling Circuit Start the drain valve will close and the inlet
valve will open (the multi functional lance must be in upper position). In case of water flow differential alarm (water leakage) or with actuating Cooling Water STOP
the corresponding inlet valve closes and the drain valve opens automatically. However a delay time will bypass the water flow differential alarm during the starting
time.
By a machine cooling water failure (all failures except the max. temperature ) the operator must lift the lance in the upper position. In this position the lance have to inspect regarding damages like rifts, holes and so on.
Only in this position the machine cooling water loop can start again via the Cooling Water Start button on the HMI.

Cooling water must flow continuously while a treatment is in progress. The oxygen
blowing lance is provided with flow rate and temperature measurements, as well as
differential flow rate monitoring.
If the differential flow at oxygen blowing lance is too high a leak could be assumed.
The cooling water supply to this part is closed and the drain line is opened in order
to avoid overpressure by steam generation of the water remaining inside.
If this happens the operator has to decide whether or not to abort the treatment because the water could run into the ladle and consequently onto the liquid steel.
The following interlocks and shut downs must be activated automatically:
If the following failure appears an alarm will be created:
Temperature > 80 C
Actual flow < 80 % of normal flow
Differential flow (
Flow 1) > 0,8 % or (
Flow 2) > 1,6 % of normal flow

JINDAL Steel,
MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

An alarm will appear in order to warn the operator in advance that the system is going to run out of normal conditions.
If the following failure appears (MCW flow abnormal):
Actual flow < 40 % of normal flow
Actual flow > 95 % of measuring range
An alarm will appear and the following safety methods must be activated automatically:
STOP Oxygen blowing
Lift Oxygen lance up to parking position
STOP burner operation
If the following failure appears (MCW flow critical):
Differential flow (
Flow 1) > 1,0 % or (
Flow 2) > 2,0 % of normal flow
Actual flow > 98 % of measuring range
An alarm will appear and the following safety methods must be activated automatically and in parallel:
Shut down of MCW supply releasing and draining of MCW feed back.
STOP circulation gas
STOP Oxygen blowing
Lift Oxygen lance
STOP alloy addition
STOP burner operation
The following functions are not automatic function and must be activated by operator:
Start the vessel flooding (< 60 mbar air, > 60 mbar = N2)
Start lifting of vessel if atmospheric pressure is reached
Shut down the vacuum pump in sequence

5.1

Low pass filtering

Before the flow values from the both flow meters can compare and the flow difference will be calculated, the flow values have to be temperature corrected. The flow
value has to be calculated together with the corresponding machine cooling water
temperature value to a flow value based on the temperature t = 0 C.
This calculation based on the following volume datas of water:
0C 1000 kg/m
25 C 997,2 kg/m
50 C 988,2 kg/m
75 C 975,0 kg/m
For all other temperature values the volume / mass value have to be linear interpolated based on the above mentioned support values.
With this flow values, free of temperature influences, the flow difference from the
inlet and outlet has to be calculated according the following calculation.
The flow values has to be low pass filtered with a time factor from T = 2 s.

5.2

Difference flow calculation sketch

JINDAL Steel,
MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

Remarks:
In the start up time the difference monitoring calculation are running but for the first
10 s no alarms and limiting value contacts are generated. During this time O2 blowing start or heating start must be interlocked.
To prevent a long swing in time after start the calculation the time factor for the filter
2 will be set on T = 2 s and after 10 s back to T = 600 s.
The flow offset between the two flow meter has to be ascertain during the commissioning and have to be integrated in the application program as constant factor.

Purging gas Gas cooler

The purging gas valves (XV13044 and XV 13045) of vessel and gas cooler purging
during heating will be energised if auto mode is selected and burner sequence has
been started. With the signal burner sequence stop the valves above will be de energised, time delayed. The purging gas flow is supervised with FIT1305. In case
of low flow for >30 seconds the burner sequence will be stopped.
In manual mode the valves must be open and the flow must be available prior to
start the burner sequence. The valves can be operated without interlocks during
non treatment condition (Vessel pressure >950 mbar). In case of low flow for >30
seconds the burner sequence will be stopped.

Inflatable sealing
Before the MF-Lance is able to lift or to lower, the inflatable seal must be opened
(valve XY13066 will be energized). Pressure switch (min. pressure signal from
pressure switch PSA1335), will monitor the position of the inflatable seal (open = P
< min, closed = P > max).
3 seconds after the inflatable sealing is opened, the MF-lance is allowed to move, 3
seconds after the MF-Lance has stopped and the inflatable sealing will close again
(valve XY13066 will be de - energized). The signal max pressure from pressure
switch PSA1335 will be used for indication.
In case of cooling water alarm condition and if the inflatable seal is not open after 3
seconds then the pressure switch signal must be by passed.
The opening and closing of inflatable seal will automatically follow the lance movement in the above mentioned method even during local operation.
Additionally two push buttons are added in the local control desk to open or close
the sealing manually.
In case the MF-Lance position is above park position, the inflatable sealing is forced
to open.

MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANCE

MF lance lifting/lowering
The MF-Lance movement will start automatically after one of the blowing or heating
sequences is started. The MF-Lance-Positioning-Control will approach the lance
position by using the position set point of the relevant process step and compare it
with the actual position signal coming from the Encoder.
If the position set point will change by more than +/- 5 cm of the actual position, the
MF-Lance will lift or lower in order to approach the new set point.
After the selected sequence is stopped, the MF-Lance will move into the park position. The maximal lifting stroke will be limited by limit switches at the ultimate lower
and upper position.
Shortly before approaching the desired lance position, the moving speed will
change over to slow speed in order to reach the final position more precisely.
Prior to lifting or lowering the inflatable seal valve (XY13066) will be energized
(opened). If the inflatable seal is open (min. pressure signal from pressure switch
PSA1335), the MF lance moving drive will be switched on in lifting or lowering direction in high respectively low speed.
When the MF lance reaches the desired position -/+ 20 cm, the MF lance speed will
be reduced to low speed. If the MF lance reach the desired position (signal from
stroke measurement MF lance =.04801.CG01), the MF lance moving drive
(=.04801.MM01-EM01) is switched off and the inflatable seal valve (XY13066) will
be de - energized (closed) (max. pressure signal from pressure switch PSA1335).
In case of emergency lifting situation due to critical machine cooling water alarm
and missing low pressure signal from pressure switch PSA1335 then the interlock
with low pressure from inflatable seal will be overridden.
Calibration of encoder
The calibration of encoders will be done automatically during lifting of MF lance via
limit switch.

Sealing protection
The seal gas protection valve will be automatically opened, if the MF-Lance position
is above the park position and automatically closed if the MF-Lance is in park position or below.
Additionally push buttons are added in the local control desk to open or close the
sealing gas protection valve manually.

Lance positions
The lance position will be indicated as distance from bottom of vessel refractory up
to lance outlet.
Distance = 6088 mm + 3870 (value from stroke transmitter in mm)
Thereby the upper position is 0 mm.
