Leon Spanish City of Culture

The foundation of the city as a camp of the Roman VII
Legion dates from the first century AD, when the city was
established to oversee the transport of gold from the mines
in the northwest of the peninsula. It became the capital of
the Kingdom of Asturias in Len under the reign of
Ordoo II in 914. It became the seat of the imperial court
under Alfonso VII, when he was crowned imperator totius
Hispaniae here in 1135. In 1188 Alfonso IX convened
Europes first parliament here in Leon.
Of special interest is the Cathedral, the most beautiful in
the Spanish Gothic. The Real Basilica de Saint Isidoro of
Romanic Art, Saint Marcos' Convent of the Renaissance
(nowadays a luxurious National Parador). Noble palaces,
churches and convents can be visited as well.
