Identify which do/does not belong to the group; encircle the letter/s of your
answer. It is possible to have 2 or more answers per number. It is also possible
that all of the items belong to the group if that is the case write all correct

II. Fill the blanks with the correct answer. (any form of erasures will be considered
incorrect)
1. The Pacific Ring of Fire is an area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions occur in the basin of the PACIFIC OCEAN. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi)
HORSESHOE shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches,
volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. The Ring of Fire has 452
volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. It is
sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt or the circum-Pacific seismic belt. The
Ring of Fire is a direct result of plate tectonics and the movement and collisions of
lithospheric plates.
2. The Philippines has a total of 65 seismic stations, 29 of which are manned, 30 are
unmanned, and 6 stations. The central operating station is located at PHIVOLCS Main Office,
Diliman, Quezon City. All information is received at the Data Receiving Center, which is
operated 24/7 by the Seismological Observation and Prediction Division (SOEPD).
3. PLATE TECTONICS theory is very young (1960-ies). It provides answers to the most
fundamental questions in seismology like the occurrence of earthquakes, depth of foci and
why are earthquakes epicenters are not distributed around the world
By definition the word "PLATE" in geologic terms means a large slab of solid rock. "
Tectonics " is a part of the Greek root for "to build" and together the terms define
how the Earth's surface is built up of moving plates. The theory of plate tectonics
itself says that the Earth's lithosphere is made up individual plates that are broken
down into over a dozen large and small pieces of solid rock.
III. Identification (any form of erasures will be considered incorrect)
Surface waves 1. waves that can only move along the surface of the planet like ripples
on water
____F_____5. Modified Mercalli Magnitude Scale is a seismic scale used for measuring the
intensity of an earthquake
____T_____6. Surface waves are of a lower frequency than body waves
____T_____7. Body waves arrive before the surface waves emitted by an earthquake
___T______8. An S wave is slower than a P wave and can only move through solid rock
_____T____9. Love wave is the fastest surface wave and moves the ground from side-to-side
_____B____10. Not all mainshocks have aftershocks
______T___11. Seismoscope lacks a device to calibrate time.
_____F____12. The Ring of Fire is a direct result of plate tectonics and the movement and
collisions of mesospheric plates.
_____T____13. Moment-Magnitude Scale is used by seismologists to measure the size of
earthquakes in terms of the energy released
______F___14. Most of the shaking felt from an earthquake is due to the Rylai wave
____T_____15. Plate collisions produce strong and sometimes very deep earthquakes (up to
700 km).
