CHAPTER THREE

Matter

3.1 What is Matter

- Matter is anything that has ______________________________
- Examples of non living thing matters:__________________________
- Examples of living thing matters:____________________________
- Examples of things that cannot be classified as matter:______________________
- Examples that show the matters have mass and occupy space:
1. Soil and living thing has mass and occupy space
2. Air has mass and occupies space
3. Water has mass and occupies space
3.2 The States of Matter
- Matter is made up of very small and discrete ______________
- Matter exist in three states:____________________________________________
-_______________: definite shape, fixed volume, fixed mass, does not flow, cannot be compress
-_______________: take the shape of container, fixed volume, fixed mass, flow easily, cannot be
compress
-_______________: take the shape of whole container, no fixed volume but takes the volume of
the container, has fixed mass, flow easily in all directions, can be compressed.

3.3 The Concept of Density

-The density of a substance is defined as the quantity of mass contained in the substance for a
unit volume.
Mass
Density = Volume

unit SI : kg/m3 or g/cm3

Different substances have different densities. Here are the densities for some common
substances.

-The ________________ of a substance is affected by its density.

- Buoyancy (or flotation) refers to the ability of a substance to float or sink in another substance.
- A lower density substance will float on a higher density liquid.
- On the other hand, a higher density substance will sink in a lower density liquid.
- Example :
1.
2.

3.4 Properties of Matter and Their Applications

- The state of matter depends on the ______________and ________
-A gas can be converted into liquid when it is compressed under high pressure and temperature is
lowered. Compressed gases occupy less space.
- Examples:
- Pipes are used to transport matter in gases or liquid state.
-Used of strong and hard steel, iron, wood and aluminium for building vehicle and furniture.
- Rubber and plastic used as insulator
- Man can also make use of concept of density in everyday life. Some example are :
a. Buoy -The buoy is filled with air and has a lower density than water.
b. Raft - The raft has a lower density than water.
c. Submarine - The submarine float and sink in the sea.
d. Hot air ballon/ meteorological ballons- float in the atmosphere because helium less dense than
air and hot air is less dense than cool air.
