Senior Capstone Product Proposal Form 2016-2017

Student Name: Ashley Taylor

Period: 3

Research Topic: Education in Africa

Thesis (one sentence) -based on your research, what you believe about your topic
Education is an essential and powerful aspect to a thriving future, yet many children in Africa lack the tools
to access this world of knowledge.
Research Question ( a question you will attempt to answer and solve on your quest)
How does an access to education affect the lives of the African youth and what are the best supplies to
supplement this guidance towards obtaining an improved learning experience?
Description of Product (What do you intend to do?)
I intend to gather crucial school supplies from the Riverside community and donate them to children in
Africa through an organization called Develop Africa.

Form of Final Product (check all that apply)

_______ Video/Documentary (explain below)
_______ Creation (explain below)
___X____ Other (please explain):

_______ Service/Mentorship, etc.

I will collect school supplies through donations and possible drives.

Describe the connection between your research (annotated bibliography) and your product.
In my research, I specifically targeted information that would educate me on the struggling school systems
in third world countries. Discovering the factors that ultimately lead youth absences in school drove me to
gather what I can to help the cause, even if it may be just a small fraction of the problem. I also found an
organization that would directly send items to the place where school is most lacking; Africa.
How will you display the entire process in in your digital portfolio?
I will document the supplies I gather from my surrounding community and take photos of them as I receive
them. Also I will include digital receipts and confirmation of me giving the Develop Africa organization the
supplies.
Estimate the number of hours needed to complete ALL of the items on your to do list (page 2) including
your final product. You must document at least ten (10) fieldwork hours outside of class.

Explain how you will document each and every step for completing your product (journal, blog,
video blog, etc.). This must be a documented (10 entries minimum) that will be uploaded
digitally. There will be checks on this throughout the process.
Every step I accomplish throughout the process I will tell of or write any difficulties I may have
experienced, what I managed to get done, and what my plans are for the next portion of the project.

What do you hope to learn during this process? Remember that this is not a research paper or
project but an experience.

Ultimately, I hope to be grateful for everything I own. Everyday I go to a great school with the world
accessible at my fingertips and I often forget how many children do not have the opportunities that I have.
Also, working with the students at Poly and Chemawa will help build upon my leadership skills.

How will this final product go outside of the realm of simply a benefit to you? How will your
knowledge, experience, creation, etc., benefit others?

I am hoping that through my projects, others will be influenced to help out those who are not as
fortunate as themselves. Giving is an essential way of showing kindness and I believe everyone has
something to share with the world, whether it be money, food, or just simple words of encouragement.
These supplies will also provide children with a beacon of hope that might drive them to go beyond
themselves, something they did not have before.
My To Do List
Below list the steps and timeline you will attempt to follow to complete your product. As you
complete the product, make additions or subtract steps as you go if and when necessary. Even though
you completed this To Do list, it will certainly change. Change it on your Googledocs, as it will be a
