Calculating the concentration of the sodium carbonate solution:
We dissolved 2.65 grams of it to make a 250cm3 standard solution.
To work out the concentration of the standard solution we therefore
have to work out the molar mass of the sodium carbonate. Its
chemical formula is Na2CO3
Concentration (in mol dm-3) = concentration (in gdm-3)
molar mass (in g mol-1)
Calculating the molar mass of Na2CO3:
(23 x 2) +12+ (16 x 3) = 106
Calculating the concentration in 0.25 dm-3
250 x 106 = 26.5g mol-1
1000
since we had 2.65g in 250 cm3, to find that concentration we just
divide the actual mass we had by the concentration required to
make one mole
2.65g = 0.1 mol
26.5g
So we have found out that the concentration of the standard

solution is 0.1 mol.

Now we have to work out the concentration of the acid.
Na2CO3 + H2SO4 Na2SO4 + CO2 + H2O
This shows that one mole of the sodium carbonate reacts with one
mole of the sulphuric acid. So their ratio is 1:1
Therefore we can use a table to calculate the concentration of the
acid.
Na2CO3
Volume = Conc. =
25.00cm3 0.100
Moles = 2.5 x 10-3

Ratio = 1:1

H2SO4
Volume = Conc. =
32.03cm3 0.078
Moles= 2.5 x 10-3

Calculations
conc. = mols x 1000
volume/avg titre
2.5 x 10-3 x 1000 = 0.078
32.03
Concentration of acid = 0.078 mols
I obtained a concentration of 0.078 mols. The solution I was given to
titrate was thought to have a concentration of between 0.05 0.15
mol dm-3. Therefore the concentration I obtained from calculating
my results lies within that range.
