Kyabje Garchen Triptrul Rinpoche

Drikung Kagyu Lineage

Drikung Kagyu Lineage is one of the Kagyu lineages
which was founded about 850 years ago, by the enlightened
spiritual master Kyoba Jigten Sumgon (1143-1217).
Teachings came directly from Buddha Shakyamuni and the
primordial Buddha, Vajradhara and were handed down to
Gampopa (1079-1153) through fully enlightened masters
such as Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, and Milarepa. Gampopa in
turn gave all these teachings to Phagmodrupa (1100-1170).
Jigten Sumgon was one of the closest and chief disciples of
Phagmodrupa. After receiving all the complete teachings
from Phagmodrupa, Jigten Sumgon then gave them all to
his chief disciple, Gurawa Tsultrim Dorje (1154-1221). All
these enlightened energies, blessings and teachings were
then handed down unbroken to the present 37th and 36th
lineage holders, H.H. Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang
Rinpoche who lives in Dehra Dun, India and H.H. Drikung
Kyabgon Chungtsang Rinpoche who lives in Tibet. Lord
Jigten Sumgon prophesied again and again, "In the future
my teachings will flourish by the two Bodhisattvas, who
are like the sun and the moon, through their compassion
and wisdom." H.H. Chetsang Rinpoche is like the sun. He
is the emanation of Chenrezig, the compassionate deity.
H.H. Chungtsang Rinpoche is like the moon. He is the
emanation of Manjushri, the wisdom deity. As a member of
the Kagyu family, it shares with the other Kagyu lineages
practices such as Mahmudr (phyag rgya chen po) and the
Six Dharmas of Naropa (na ro chos drug). Within this
context of a shared heritage with the other Kagyu lineages,
the Drigung Kagyu is known for the philosophical view
expressed in The Single Intention (dgong gcig), and the
stages of Mahmudr practice known as "The Five-fold
Profound Path" (phyag chen lnga dan). Furthermore, from
the 16th century onward the Drigung Kagyu has held the
main transmission of a treasure-cycle known as the Most
Profound (yang zab). The Drikung is also known for its
Great Phowa Practice and great meditators. There are many
stories about those who have attained Enlightenment in one
lifetime. More information at http://www.drikung.org/

Born in Nangchen Kham, Eastern Tibet in 1936, the 8th Kyabje

Garchen Triptrul Rinpoche was recognized at age seven by
Drikung Kyabgon Shiwe Lodro as the incarnation of Gar
Chodingpa, one of the heart disciples of the famed Jigten
Sumgon, Kyobpa Rinpoche founder of the Drikung Kagyu. In
ancient India, he had been incarnated as Mahasiddha Aryadeva,
the lotus-born disciple of the great Nagarjuna. In the seventh
century, he was known as Lonpo Gar, the minister of the
Tibetan Dharma King Songsten Gampo.
Studying and practicing under the direction of the Siddha
Chime Dorje, Garchen Rinpoche received vast and profound
instructions on the preliminary practices, the fivefold practice
of Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa. At the age of 22,
soon after Rinpoche completed two-and-a-half years of sealed
retreat, Tibet was invaded by China. Following the war,
Garchen Rinpoche was imprisoned for almost 20 years. It was
in prison that he met his root lama, the great Khenpo Munsel
and practiced diligently in secret until signs of realization
spontaneously appeared. Khenpo Mnsel. praised him with the
words: "Gar Rinpoche is the emanation of a bodhisattva".
Through twenty years of imprisonment and hardships,
Rinpoche was able to transform his body, speech and mind and
emerged as a selfless master of vast compassion and wisdom.
Following his release from the prison, Rinpoche has worked
tirelessly to rebuild his monastery in the Gar village, as well as
27 other monasteries in the greater area of Eastern Tibet. At the
same time he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to the task of
passing on the teachings of the lineage.
In 1997 Rinpoche first visited the West and founded many
Drikung Garchen centers in the USA and in Europe. He travels
tirelessly to the various centers and monasteries in Asia,
America, and Europe to teach especially the infallible law of
karma cause and effect and the essence teachings of the ThirtySeven Practices of Bodhisattvas, a commentary written by the
Bodhisattva Ngulchu Thogme Zangpo.
Rinpoches vast realization, love and compassion with the sole
wish to benefit all beings without exception are highly revered
not only by masters and disciples of his own lineage but also
masters and disciples of other traditions as well. He always
holds a prayer wheel in his hand, continuously spins the wheel
to pray for, and to radiate compassionate energy to benefit all
beings. The great compassionate Tara is Garchen Rinpoches
main yidam deity and his aspiration is to follow in her footsteps
to bring love and compassion to all.

His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche

Bardo means gap in-between or intermediate state.
Rinpoche will give teachings based on prayers by Tertn
Karma Linpa: Root Verses of the Six Bardos, Prayer for
Deliverance from the Bardo's Narrow Passage & Bardo
Prayer that Protects from Fear. Six bardos are Bardo of
This Life, Bardo of Dream, Bardo of Meditation, Bardo
of Dying, Bardo of Dharmata (Luminosity of True
Nature) and Bardo of Karmic Becoming. Rinpoche will

supplications and how to avoid unfortunate rebirth.

PHOWA Teaching & Transmission, kl. 16 - 18

Phowa or transference of consciousness to Buddha
Amitabhas pure realm at the time of death is the simplest
and most direct method to attain liberation from
samsara/enlightenment with little meditation. The Great
Drikung Phowa, Jagtsukma (Standing Blade of Grass) is
one of the most powerful and swift practices presently
being upheld and taught in an unbroken lineage through
the Drikung masters. Rinpoche will give teaching and
transmission on this profound method. This session is a
prerequisite for the Phowa practice on the next day.

AMITABHA Teaching, kl. 10 12
HOW TO BE REBORN IN DEWACHEN (SUKHAVATI),
Though we have this precious human life, and have
encountered the Buddhas teachings, samsara has so much
suffering suffering of birth, aging, sickness and death. We
do not get what we want but we get what we do not want. In
order to free ourselves and others from samsara, we should
make the effort to be reborn in Amitabhas Pureland where
one can swiftly benefit all sentient beings, accumulate
merits, purify obscurations and attain enlightenment.

PHOWA Practice, kl. 13 14

AMITABHA Empowerment, kl. 14 16
Buddha Amitabha (Buddha of boundless light) is the chief
Buddha of the Padma Family, the creator of the Western
Pureland Dewachen and is one of the Five Dhyni Buddhas.
There are many histories of how the historical Buddha
appeared as bodhisattva bhishu Darmakara first cultivated
bodhicitta and then studied, practiced and supplicated while
he met countless Buddhas reinforcing his bodhicitta each
time when he met a different Buddha. Seeing the
immeasurable suffering in samsara, great and powerful
compassion grew. He made a special aspiration from among
the 500 types of aspirations that he would accomplish
bodhicitta and benefit sentient beings, in particular, he
focused on the creation of his Pureland, Dewachen (in
Sanskrit Sukhavati), the Land of Great Bliss. He vowed,
Even those who have not achieved bhumis can be reborn in
my Pureland. They can make this connection simply by
hearing my name and pray with devotion. With this kind of
great motivation, he practiced bodhicitta for countless
kalpas, perfected his great aspirations, and finally attained
Buddhahood.
