Crime, what is crime? And how is it caused?

Crime has been around for as long as man has been around. Basically what crime
means is to do something which is unacceptable to others. It can be as simple as
depriving others of their rights or as intricate and heinous as taking someone's life
and well being. Crime is the hallmark of society's civil nature. It is abundant in
barbaric civilizations and redundant in civilized ones. However no society is clear of
it. The reason for that is simply human nature. For one it is in every man nature to
rebel , to go against the grain. A interesting aspects of crime has been society's
perspective on it. For example a barbaric society may not see a major violation of
rights as crime and a civilised society may see a simple life disruptive nuisance as
one. As centuries have passed crime has evolved and so has different societies
views on it. Crime happens in every country and similarly my country Pakistan is no exception to
it. Like any civilization it also has had a criminal element to it from the beginning. An
example to how crime has evolved in Pakistan one can observe what has effected
the common man the most. In the beginning an act as simple taking a percentage
out of payments hurt common men's sentiment but those simpler times have
passed. Now adays the crime that plagues my people the most is homicide . Yes
the act of taking a life. Whether it may be because of gang warfare, religious
pseudo guerrilla warfare or even as simple as petty issues. Life has become
unbearably cheap in Pakistan .Crime reduction and prevention has been, and always
will remain to be a top priority of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches in
Pakistan . But even then the problem still prevails. So now the big question is why are we failing?
As Napoleon Bonaparte wrote in one of his books :
The infectiousness of crime is like that of the plague. It cant be controlled very
easily.
The 3 major crimes in my country are drug trafficking, homicide , cyber crime

Drug trafficking is a global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale
of substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. In 2001 alone, an estimated

2,913,724 pounds of drugs ranging from marijuana to heroin were seized by the
federal government, according to the Federal-wide Drug Seizure System. One of the
largest problems that drug trafficking creates is the financial cost on society. For
example, in 2002, drug-related costs to society were estimated at $180.9 billion,
which is divided between various costs like health care and productivity losses
according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. On top of these numbers are
more direct financial costs such as budgeting for the police, DEA, FBI and border
patrol agents involved directly in preventing the trafficking of drugs. Trafficking of
drugs also has an effect on the correctional system in both overcrowding jails and

prisons, as well as increasing the annual cost of corrections in the United States to
feed and house drug-related inmates
The drugs provided by trafficking also result in disability and death through
overdose and drug-related diseases. This includes side effects from the respiratory,
cardiovascular, neurological, kidney, liver, musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal
damage that illicit drugs can inflict on the body. In fact, one in four deaths in the
United States can be linked to alcohol, tobacco or illicit drug use, with illicit drugs
being largely provided by drug trafficking operations. Every year, thousands of people,
many of them innocent bystanders are killed in brutal clashes between police and heavily armed
drug dealers throughout the world

A top American police officer recently said he was convinced that the only real solution was to
educate young people at infancy stage on the dangers of becoming involved, in order to at least
reduce demand in the next generation. It makes sense, because a business cannot survive without
customers.
No doubt implementing a full scale programme to educate about illegal drugs throughout our entire
system of learning will not be easy. Bermuda has a serious illegal drug problem with customers
throughout our society. In fact we probably pass customers daily who appear to be law-abiding
citizens, but in the dark shadows are a part of the problem, and not the solution.
Just as the world launched an all-out attack on the hazards of smoking which resulted in smoking
bans in just about every jurisdiction, a similar thrust should be aimed at catching young minds early
to stem the illegal drug tide.

Homicide is the killing of another human being. The definition of homicide includes
intentional killings, such as murder Homicide is one of the leading causes of death . We
estimated the impact of homicide on life expectancy by demographic group and
geographic area in Los Angeles. Homicide was estimated to reduce life expectancy
by 0.4 years for Los Angeles County residents and by 2.1 years for black males. The
impact of homicide on life expectancy was higher in low-income neighborhoods. In
some low-income urban neighborhoods, homicide was estimated to decrease life
expectancy in black males by nearly 5 years. Homicide causes substantial
reductions in life expectancy.

Encourage initiatives such as gun and knife amnesties in areas which are afflicted
with violent crime. This is periods during which people can hand in their weapons
without fearing criminal charges. This sends a message that people who are

considering violent crime -- maybe even homicide -- can get out of the vicious
spiral. Provide economic opportunities to people (particularly young people) so they
are not seduced by violence and crime. Aspects of this should include job skills
training, a public transportation system that links jobs and also provides access to
jobs that pay a living wage, regardless of your color, gender or political persuasion

Usually a single event from the perspective of the victim. An example would be where
the victim unknowingly downloads a Trojan horse virus, which installs a keystroke
logger on his or her machine. The keystroke logger allows the hacker to steal private data
such as internet banking and email passwords.

Another common form of Type 1 cybercrime is phishing. This is where the victim
receives a supposedly legitimate email (quite often claiming to be a bank or credit card
company) with a link that leads to a hostile

What then is the solution? The solution lies in changing the fabric of the society and the government.
The government needs to step up the battle against Criminalization. More money needs to be poured
into education and towards creating more opportunities for the poor and the young. And most of all,
education and responsibility need to be drilled into the new generation by the parent.
Tlje young and in fact everyone need to discover all over again values like kindness, respect for
another and tolerance. These may repetitive, even mundane in today's context. But these are the only
ingredients of peace and survival.
