8. External Situations or Essential Development factors for Consideration in
Curriculum Planning
8.1 Existing Situations or Economic Development
Thailand nowadays, biotechnological based businesses have been expanded
rapidly. There are changes in the development of quality of life. For example, new
agricultural technology is very sophisticated and significant to increase the productivity
and help solve problems in the future due to the lack of food. Medical technology
provides high accuracy of various applications including monoclonal antibody test kit,
vaccine for new diseases, etc. Moreover, new renewable energies such as bioethanol,
biodiesel derived from various sources of raw materials are developed by the rapid
growth of biotechnological research integrated with the knowledge of engineering. This
can be said that the knowledge of engineering integrated with life science becomes
important for everyday life. The OECD forecasts the new global economics will swift
into bioeconomics in year 2030. This future trend of economics will change Thailand as
the country is agricultural based economics which needs biotechnology and
engineering research for developing the country.
8.2 Existing Situations of Social and Cultural Development
Many organizations in Thailand are concerned about the growth of
biotechnology research which plays an important role in developing the country.
These concerns can be seen in the strategic plan of NSTDA (2007-2011), strategic plan
in science and technology provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology (20032013), strategic plan for economics and socials no. 11 (2012-2016), etc. All plans
emphasize on the development in both human resources and knowledge of new
trend in biotechnology integrated with engineering based research to compete with
the changes in the future global economics.
9. The impact from Items 8.1 and 8.2 on Curriculum Development and
Relationship to the Universitys Mission.
9.1 Curriculum Development
Burapha University aims to be national research university in next 10
years as targeted in the strategic plan. To achieve this goal, the increases in the
number of postgraduate students and lecturer with a PhD degree are significant and
needed to well plan in long term.
The Faculty of Engineering is concerned about this change in the future.
We need to prepare the foundation and infrastructure of both human resources and
program of study. Bioengineering program is nowadays very significant and a program
integrating with life science to enhance the quality of life and strengthen the
economics of the country. Although this program is new to the faculty, a lot of
lecturers have been working on research related with biological based such as
ergonomic study at the department of industrial engineering, research on medical
devices and image and signals processing at the department of electrical
engineering, research on bioenergy at the department of chemical engineering etc. The
faculty therefore starts up this program to strengthen our research staffs and academic
staffs to be prepared for the new trend of biotechnological based research in the
future. At the beginning, master and doctoral programs are focused and then the
bachelor program will be developed in collaboration with the well-known university.
9.2 Relationship to the Universitys Mission.
This program is multidisciplinary program integrated between
engineering and life sciences such as biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology,
medicine, pharmacy and public health to promote the new knowledge that help
strengthen research and teaching in bioengineering-based study.

Section 2: Specific Information of the Curriculum
1. Philosophy, Significance, and Objectives of the Curriculum
Philosophy of the Curriculum
The curriculum of the Master of Engineering combined with the Doctor of
Philosophy in Bioengineering Program (International Program) is mainly emphasized on
instruction of in-depth theories, research and academic search for creating the new
body of knowledge in the field of integrated engineering with life science.
Significance
The 10th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2007 2011)
stipulates the foundation of building national capitals in all aspects, for instance, social
capital, economic capital, natural resources capital with strong and sustainable
environment., and human capital based on human resource- centered development.
The philosophy of sufficiency economy is to be applied as a practical guideline for
leading the way towards a peaceful and happy society. Moreover, the future economy
will shift to Bioeconomy in year 2030 as predicted by the OECD. The biological based
technology is included in this plan as the country is agricultural based.
Objectives of the Curriculum
1.1 To create the advanced postgraduates in bioengineering having high
potential in the sustainably integration of research and development
between engineering and life science.
1.2
very good academic record or holding at least second-class honors degree are eligible.
All applicants must pass the evaluation process of the program committees.
Scheme 2.1: Applicants with the master of engineering, science, technology,
medicine, pharmacy or all fields of life science background and having a GPA of 3.25 or
above are eligible.
Scheme 2.2: Applicants with the bachelor of engineering, science, technology,
medicine, pharmacy or all fields of life science background and having very good
academic record or holding at least second-class honors degree are eligible.
All applicants must pass the acceptable English test: minimum required
