1. A rectangular fin (kfin = 5.0 W/mK) with length Lfin = 2 m, width wfin = 1 m, and thickness
tfin = 0.3 m is used to enhance heat transfer from a composite wall (kA = 1.0 W/mK, kB =
2.0 W/mK, kC = 3.0 W/mK, kD = 4.0 W/mK) with the length, the height, and the width
as shown in Figure Q1. Wall A experiences an uniform volumetric heat generation of
q 250W/m 3 . Air flows across the fin at T = 25oC and convection a coefficient of h = 20
W/m2K. Assuming one-dimensional conduction with constant properties and steady state
condition:
(a) Construct an appropriate thermal circuit of the system and express all resistances in
terms of given variables.
(b) Determine the total rate of heat loss from the composite to the flowing air.
(c) Determine the outer surface temperature of wall D labelled as TD.

2. Annular aluminium (kAl = 240 W/mK) fins of rectangular profile are attached to a circular
tube having an outside diameter of 50 mm and outer surface temperature of 200C. The
fins are 4 mm thick and 15 mm long. The system is in ambient air at a temperature of
20C and the surface convection coefficient is 40 W/m2.K. Design the number of fin per
unit length of the tube to increase heat transfer of 500% compared to the bare surface of
the tube.

3. Consider a thin square electronic chip with the width W = 0.0107 m has the maximum
allowable operating temperature of Tc = 75oC. The chip is exposed to a dielectric liquid at
its outer surface, with ho = 1000 W/m2K and T,o = 20oC, and is joined to a circuit board
at its inner surface. The board thickness and thermal conductivity are Lb = 0.005 m and kb
= 1.5 W/mK, respectively. The other surface of the board is exposed to ambient air at hi
= 40 W/m2K and T,i = 20oC. To maximize heat dissipation, the outer surface of the chip
is joined to 25 pin fins with the thermal conductivity kf = 300 W/mK, diameter D = 0.0015
m and length L = 0.015 m. The tips of the pin fins are connected to a layer of perfect
insulation. Assuming negligible contact resistance between the chip and the board, onedimensional and steady state condition:
(a) Sketch the equivalent thermal resistance circuit for the pin-chip-board assembly.
(b) Calculate the maximum rate of heat dissipation from the chip, qc.
(b) qc = 65.14 W

4. Two 1.5 m long stainless steel (AISI 304) rods of diameter 864 mm are welded together
end to end. For a post weld heat treatment purpose in order to strengthen the welded joint,
the joint is to be maintained at 780C for 2 hours. The rods are in air at 30C with
convection coefficient of 25 W/m2K. What is the minimum power input needed to be
applied at the joint for maintaining the required temperature?
q = 36.517 kW

5. A 40-mm-long, 2-mm-diameter pin fin is fabricated of an aluminium alloy (k = 140

W/mK). The fin is exposed to flowing water at 25C and convection coefficient of 1000
W/m2K. An engineer suggests that by holding the fin tip at a low temperature of 0C, the
fin heat transfer rate can be increased. However, the use of heat sink at the fin tip is
required. Compare the fin efficiency with and without fixing the fin tip temperature in
order to justify the suggestion.
With fixed TL, = 0.210

6. To enhance heat transfer from a square silicon chip of width 5 mm on a side, a copper pin
fin is brazed to the surface of the chip. The pin length and diameter are 10 mm and 2 mm,
respectively, and atmospheric air at 27C and convection coefficient of 205 W/m2K is in
cross flow over the pin. The surface of the chip is maintained at 350 K. Calculate the total
rate of heat transfer from the chip.
qt = 0.876 W

7. Turbine blade mounted to a rotating disc, as in figure below, in a gas turbine engine is
exposed to a gas stream that is at 1200C and maintains a convection coefficient of
250 W/m2K. The blade is made of stainless steel AISI 304. The blade profile has a
uniform cross section area of Ac = 5 10-4 m2 and a perimeter of P = 100 mm. The blade
has a length L of 60 mm. A proposed blade cooling scheme, which involves routing air
through the supporting disc, is able to maintain the base of the blade at a temperature of
Tb = 300C.
(c) Evaluate the proposed cooling scheme if the maximum allowable blade temperature
is 1100C.
(d) Under proposed scheme, what is the heat transfer rate to the coolant from each blade?

(a) TL = 1156.84C
(b) qf = 388 W
