a) Assume the thermal noise only. Input source resistance Rs and Rin
are resistive in nature. Derive the expression of SNR(in) and
SNR(out). Assume Vnout is the total output noise voltage [10]
b) Prove that Noise Figure (NF) =

[10]

2) Use the generalized expression of 1(b) to derive an expression of NF

of the following Common source amplifier circuits
Assumption:
Ignore channel length modulation and body bias effect of the
transistor M1.

Take thermal noise as only noise source for the devices (all
resistances and MOS transistor)
Use trans conductance of M1 as gm. Rp is the matching resistance.

Assume Rs=Rp and RD>>1. Also assume g mRs =1, What is the NF for
the above expression you have derived ? To obtain NF of 3.5dB, what
will be the required trans conductance (gm) ?

3) Derive the expression of NF of the following circuit ( Hints: find the

4) For the following circuits, We will try to derive the expression of

output current vs input voltage Vin as a series like :
=0 + 1 ( 0 ) + 2 ( 0 )2 +3 ( 0 )3 +
Where 0 and 0 are the bias current and voltage (when = 0 , the
only current flows through M1 is bias current 0 .
Assume

2 =0

= 22 etc.

You can assume long channel device with negligible channel length
modulation and body bias effect.
Also assume 0 = (0 0 1 )2 .
Find out the expression of 1 2, in terms of R1, I0,K. [5+5]
Assume that in place of Vin we apply a signal = Asint + Asin2t,
then find the expression of IP2. [10]
From the expression of IP2, you will notice an interesting fact , that it
includes the term V0, comment on that . [5].

Assignment Questions(Part-2) [100 marks]

1) Fig. 1 shows a single pole RC filter.

Fig. 1. A single-pole RC filter

a) Identify thermal noise source(s) and show that the total output noise
power is independent of the resistance value R. [10]
b) If the 3-dB cut-off frequency of this filter is 100 MHz, determine the
noise bandwidth. Motivate your answer by presenting the detail of
your derivations. [10]
2) Input-output characteristics of an LNA, which is designed in a shortchannel process, is given by the following equation:

( )2
=
1 + 0.1( )

If the bias voltage in the input gives us = = 0.3, calculate

the value of IIP3 in dBm. [10]

3) Gilbert mixer and its variants are one of the most popular types of
mixers used in todays designs due to its good conversion gain, NF,
and linearity and isolation. See Fig. 2 and solve the questions.

Fig. 2. Gilbert Mixer

a) Derive the expression for the conversion gain of the double balanced
Gilbert mixer. [10]
b) Derive the expression for IIP3 and estimate IIP3 of the mixer,
assuming (0 ) = 0.2V for the transistor of RF port. [10]
c) How much would be the IIP3 improved with 50% increase in
(0 )? What would be the power consumption for this
improvement? [10]

4) Passive mixers have better linearity but no gain and hence higher noise
figures compared to active mixers. A double balanced passive mixer is
shown (fig. 2) with square wave oscillator (). Assume
that () = () .

Fig. 3. Passive Double Balance Mixer

a) Find the conversion gain of the mixer assuming the switches are
ideal. [7.5]
b) Find the conversion gain of mixer assuming the switches have the
on-resistance of /2. [7.5]
c) Derive the expression for the device width if the maximum gain
degradation is no more than 1 dB compared to the gain in part a).
Assume that the transistors operate in linear region when on. [10]
d) Derive the expression for total power needed to drive the mixer. [5]

5) Assuming that the switching transistors (square wave LO input) in

Gilbert are ideal and do not generate any noise. The only noise
generating transistors are RF port transistors.
a) Calculate the input referred noise and NF. Assume that =
400, = 2 and = 7.5/. [10]
