Gasette Journal - Long Island

Eye Witness Account

Today I watched a man get shot, he fell
dead instantaneously. Then only minutes latter
I saw a boy that had been shot right through his
eye. He wouldn't be able to see the stairway to
heaven. I thought of how he would be able to
find the pathway to heaven, we must all pray
that, that poor boy will make it. With his shirt Maps of New York/ also The large New
York fire
stained from all the blood and gore and more
blood coming, may God have mercy on that
poor poor boy's soul. Here on the battlefield
there are loyals and rebels fighting for the
right to be free or under control of the king.

Battle of Long Island

New York August 26, 1776
Today Aug. 27 1776, British
troops attacked our American forces
stationed on the western end of
Long Island. By now today many
Americans have been captured,
killed, or driven further west. The
British now lay siege to the
American position on Brooklyn
Heights. Washington ordered a
retreat on today, and under the cover
of darkness tonight, the army will
escape across the East River to
Manhattan Island.

Gazette Journal - George Washington

General George Washington is a General George Washington
famous leader who is fighting for
our freedom against Britain. He
was born 1732 and died December
14 1799 from a doctor draining
almost 2.5 liters of blood. So far
he has helped us win many wars
against the british. In all he has
won about 13 battles against the
British. Hopefully he will be able
to lead us to victory and help us
start our own independence.

George Washington spent

most of his days fighting in
and around New York but
he also had some fights in
nearby areas. The reason
that he is fighting is still
clear to all of us and may
we hope that he wins this
war and sets us free.

Gazette Journal - Slaves in the war

Slaves play a huge role in the war.
Slave-owners are afraid to leave for
war in case there slaves raise up and
slaughtered their families in their
absence. They didn't want to give
slaves weapons to fight for the same
reason, in case they used them
against their owners. Most slaves
were not allowed to learn to read or
write. Their owners were afraid that
they would pass messages to slaves
on other plantations and start a
revolt. If a slave-owner caught his
slave learning to read or write, he
could be punished with up to 300
lashes.

Eye witness account from Boyreau

Brinch. We were overtaken by
the British after we had marched
about a mile towards North
Castle. The party that pursued us
were 60 light dragoons [soldiers
on horseback], whom we saluted so
warmly with a well aimed fire that
they were obliged to return for
additional force. They again
overtook us about 3 miles from New
York, but as we had also some new
forces, they thought
most proper to return without an
engagement.
