Team Encouragement Strategies

At the start of the semester, each student will be placed in a team in which they will be
able to gain points for their team as a reward for team participation and exceptional effort in
supporting their academic community. After being placed in their team, each time will be guided
by their academic advisor, in choosing a team mascot, team colors, and designing a logo to be
placed on team t-shirts. Periodically the team with the most points will be rewarded for their
effort with predesignated reward such as a special lunch, a no homework day, or a team party.
The team with the most points at the end of the school year will be allowed to choose the theme
for a school-wide party.

students family members the chance to connect with teachers and learn about the curriculum and events
held at St. Monicas Charter School. In addition, teachers will be able to answer any questions or

concerns parents may have. Although this initial meeting is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged to
attend in order to learn about the expectations held by school faculty. In addition to this initial meeting,
individual parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled twice during the school year to discuss the
students progress, strengths, and weakness. Any concerns from either the parents or the teacher will be
brought up as well. A letter and an e-mail will be sent out to families two weeks prior to conferences in
order to arrange a meeting time. Below is an example of the sheet that will be completed during a parentteacher conference. Once it is filled out, the teacher will make a copies for the parents as well as for the
school to have on file.

Discipline Theory

Running head: DISCIPLINE PLAN

Discipline at St. Marys Charter School is rooted in assisting its students in understanding
the effects of their behaviors on social, cultural, and personal levels. St. Marys theoretical
foundation on discipline applies concepts proposed by social-cognitive theorist, Albert Bandura.
St. Marys discipline plan employs intervention practices to help students develop positive
behavior that addresses cognitive and social deficiencies with minimal disruption to the learning
environment and educational goals (Edgar, 2012).
St. Marys Discipline Plan is further influenced by the founder of Positive Behavior
Intervention and Supports, Fredric Jones. Fredric Joness philosophy is that children can develop
positive characteristics, and schools can have fewer disciplinary issues by teaching responsibility
for his or her actions, parental involvement, and limit-setting prior to punitive disciplinary
actions (Van Tassell, 1999).
Dr. Fred Rogers beautifully states children require and long for having set limits. St.
Marys progressive discipline strategy deals with specific infractions along with appropriate
consequences. The discipline plan is designed to promote the teacher-student relationship
centered on intimacy and trust than on authority (The Fred Rogers Company, 2016). Mr.
Rogers summarizes it can be very frightening for a child not to have limits. Not only can the
world outside be frightening, but the world inside, the world of feelings, can also be scary when
youre not sure you can manage those feelings by yourself (The Fred Rogers Company, 2016).
