Book 6 Summaries
Rachel
Still working in the Equatorial, her hotel in Africa, Rachel finds herself becoming old. Again she
continues to boast about her accomplishments, one of them being the creation of her domain
where she can be the boss. She misses America, but her hotel and social status keeps her in
Africa. She then reflects on her past in Africa, concluding that to survive in Africa, Christian
values wont cut it. You must do whatever you need to keep yourself up, like holding yourself up
with your elbows in a crowd.
Leah
She and Anatole still talk about stories and history while in bed together. Time has flown, as
they are both becoming elderly. The couple have been living on an agricultural station in
Angola for ten years now. Despite her past and her slight sympathy for her fathers blindness,
she only now cares about her four children, satisfied that time is erasing whiteness altogether.
Adah
In medical school Adah takes the Hippocratic oath. She then faces an interesting dilemma: is it
immoral to let a child die? With overpopulation approaching the near future, distribution of
resources is becoming inhibited. She then talks about the many ways Africa can clean itself,
using its biological brooms like Driver ants and diseases. She also finds that she hasnt married
yet. She might have come close with the neurologist, as she had a short-lived relationship with
him. But now, Adah enjoys her new hobby of collecting misprinted bibles.
