Configuration Guide - EPON

1 EPON Access Configuration

1.1 Overview of EPON

This section provides the background information about the Ethernet Passive Optical Network
(EPON).
Increasing Internet users, fast-developing video conference and large-file transfer services
require more and more bandwidth. Optical fiber access is obviously the most effective way to
increase the network bandwidth. The EPON system combines the mature Ethernet technology
and Passive Optical Network (PON) technology that are widely used to implement point-tomultipoint access on the Ethernet. The EPON system can provide complete optical access
solutions such as fiber to the home (FTTH) and fiber to the building (FTTB). The EPON
technology can also be used for monitoring and transmitting high-definition video streams in a
large enterprise. In addition, the EPON system is applied to the network transmitting voice,
video, and data access services.

1.2 EPON Features Supported by the S9300

This section describes the EPON features supported by the S9300.

EPON Access
As shown in Figure 1-1, the EPON system consists of the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in the
office, the Optical Network Unit (ONU) at the user side, and the Optical Distribution Network
(ODN). In the EPON system, data can be transmitted bidirectionally through a single fiber. The
ODN provides an optical channel between the OLT and ONU.
In the typical EPON networking, an S9300 equipped with EPON Line Processing Units (LPUs)
can be used as the OLT to implement the following functions:
l

Managing access of ONUs

Broadcasting Ethernet data to ONUs

Initiating and controlling the distance measuring process and recording the distance
measuring information

Allocating bandwidth to ONUs

1.3 Configuring the EPON Access Service

This section describes how to configure the EPON access service.

1.3.1 Establishing the Configuration Task

Applicable Environment
After years of rapid development, broadband services have been expanded from the Internet
access service to value-added services such as video, interactive game, and VoIP services. These
services, especially the bandwidth-consuming broadband video services such as IPTV, have
high requirements for bandwidth. The optical access technology is thus developed to meet the
high requirement for bandwidth.
The xDSL technology will still be used in the future; therefore, fibers and copper cables will
coexist on the access layer of the metro Ethernet for a long time. Currently, the access mode
should be selected according to the actual situation and requirements of the network and services.
For the broadband access service of ordinary users, the traditional xDLS can be adopted. For
the access service in high-class communities or business buildings, the FTTH or FTTB mode
can be adopted. Thus differentiated services can be provided to meet requirements of various
users.

Quidway S9300 Terabit Routing Switch

Configuration Guide - EPON

1 EPON Access Configuration

An S9300 installed with Ethernet LPUs and EPON LPUs can function as a routing switch and
an OLT at the same time. Such an S9300 supports both the traditional access mode and optical
access mode to meet the requirements of different users.

Pre-configuration Tasks
Before configuring the EPON access service, complete the following task:
l

Ensuring normal communication between the S9300 and the upstream device

Data Preparation
To configure the EPON access service, you need the following data.
No.

Data

Name of the line profile

Name of the dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) profile

Bandwidth of ONU

Name of the service profile

Authentication mode of the ONU

Update interval of the key

1.3.2 Configuring a Line Profile

Context
Before adding an ONU, you need to create a line profile. The line profile defines the line
parameters of the ONU.

Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view

The system view is displayed.

Step 2 Run:
line-profile line-profile-name

A line profile is created and the line profile view is displayed.

The S9300 provides a default line profile default0. If no line profile is configured, you can use
the default line profile when adding an ONU.
Line parameters are complicated. The line profile simplifies the setting of the line parameters.
To add an ONU, you only need to bind the ONU to a line profile, and then the S9300 can deliver
the line parameters in the profile to the LPU.

Step 3 (Optional) Run:

dba-profile dba-profile-name

A DBA profile is bound to the line profile.

By binding a DBA profile to a line profile, you can limit the bandwidth of the ONU that uses
the line profile.
Step 4 (Optional) Run:
dba-threshold queue-index {
q1 value | q2 value | q3 value | q4 value | q5 value | q6 value | q7 value | q8
value } *

The bandwidth of each queue on the ONU is set.

Step 5 (Optional) Run:
encrypt triple-churning

The encryption mode of the ONU is set.

----End

1.3.3 (Optional) Configuring a DBA Profile

Context
The OLT dynamically allocates bandwidth to uplink interfaces of ONUs according to the
parameters in the DBA profile. By configuring a DBA profile, you can set the bandwidth
allocation mode and bandwidth parameters uniformly. ONUs with the same bandwidth
allocation requirement can be bound to the same DBA profile to simplify the configuration.

Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view

The system view is displayed.

Step 2 Run:
dba-profile dba-profile-name { { type1 fix fix-value [ grant-interval interval |
grant-length length ] } | { type2 assure assure-value } | { type3 assure assurevalue max max-value } | { type4 max max-value } | { type5 fix fix-value assure
assure-value max max-value [ grant-interval interval | grant-length length ] } }

A DBA profile is created and the bandwidth allocation mode is specified.

The S9300 provides a default DBA profile default0.
The DBA profile specifies the bandwidth allocation mode and bandwidth parameters. Bandwidth
is classified into three types: fixed bandwidth, guaranteed bandwidth, and best-effort bandwidth.
The DBA profile can define the following bandwidth allocation modes:
l Type 1: fixed bandwidth
l Type 2: guaranteed bandwidth
l Type 3: combination of guaranteed bandwidth and best-effort bandwidth
l Type 4: maximum bandwidth

1.3.4 (Optional) Configuring a Service Profile

Context
To manage an ONU in Operation, Administration, and Management (OAM) mode, you need to
create a service profile before adding the ONU to the S9300.

Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view

The system view is displayed.

Step 2 Run:
service-profile service-profile-name

A service profile is created and the service profile view is displayed.

The S9300 provides a default service profile default0.
Generally, ONUs are located far away from the telecommunication room and deployed
dispersedly, which makes the service configuration difficult. To solve this problem, you can
manage ONUs remotely through the S9300, that is, the OLT. In this manner, you can deliver
the services to the ONUs without configuring the services on site. This reduces workload and
expenses of service configuration.
By using the service profile, you can manage and deliver services to multiple ONUs. For details
on how to configure the terminal management service, see 1.4 Configuring the Terminal
Management Service.
----End

1.3.5 (Optional) Configuring an SNMP Profile

Context
ONUs are managed in OAM or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) mode. In SNMP
mode, the S9300 delivers management information to the network management system (NMS)
through an SNMP profile. Then the NMS manages ONUs.

Procedure
Step 1 Run:
system-view

The system view is displayed.

1.4 Configuring the Terminal Management Service

This section describes how to configure the terminal management service.

1.4.1 Establishing the Configuration Task

Applicable Environment
Generally, ONUs are located far away from the telecommunication room and deployed
dispersedly, which makes the service configuration difficult. To solve this problem, you can
manage ONUs remotely through the S9300, that is, the OLT. In this manner, you can deliver
the services to the ONUs without configuring the services on site. This reduces workload and
expenses on service configuration.
NOTE

The configuration tasks in this section are optional. You can perform the required tasks according to the
actual situation of the network.

Pre-configuration Tasks
Before configuring the terminal management service, complete the following tasks:
l

Ensuring normal communication between the S9300 and the upstream device

Adding ONUs to the S9300

Data Preparation
To configure the terminal management service, you need the following data.
NOTE

The following data is optional and you can plan the data as required.

1.5 Configuring the EPON VLAN Service

This section describes how to configure the EPON VLAN service.

1.5.1 Establishing the Configuration Task

Applicable Environment
The EPON interface of the S9300 supports the following VLAN services:
l

VLAN tag: The EPON interface can add a VLAN tag to an upstream untagged packet
according to the ONU that sends the packet. Thus packets of different users can be
identified.

VLAN mapping: In a tagged packet sent from an ONU, the tag identifies the service type
or location of the user. This type of packets cannot be transmitted on the public network.
Therefore, the VLAN tag of the packet sent from the ONU needs to be mapped to a public
VLAN tag.

VLAN stacking: The EPON interface can add a VLAN tag to a tagged packet sent from
the ONU so that the customer VLAN ID is transparently transmitted on the ISP network.

You can configure different VLAN services according to the actual situation and requirement
of the network.
NOTE

The configuration tasks in this section are optional and not listed in sequence. You can configure them as
required.
