Dear Fellow Republican, WHO IS ROBERT BENTLEY?

Consider these questions:

 Is Rep. Bentley the “Conservative” he claims to be? Or

does he vote most of the time with Liberal Democrats on
issues of education, taxes and ethics?

 Why would the AEA boss and Democrats want Bentley as

the GOP nominee for Governor?

 Why would AEA and gambling interests fund Robert

Bentley’s campaigns?
Why Do AEA and Democrats
 Is it honest for Rep. Bentley to claim he does not run a Support Rep. Bentley?
negative campaign when he knowingly allows AEA to
spend millions of dollars on smear campaigns on his
behalf? Please take one minute
to read the reverse side
 Robert Bentley is a good man; but has he fallen in with to understand why.
bad allies and allowed politics to change him as it has so
many other good men?

If Democrats are able with cross-over votes in our July 13th primary runoff to pick Bentley as our
GOP nominee for governor, then Paul Hubbert, head of AEA and vice-chair of the Democratic Party of
Alabama, will have succeeded in nominating his choice for both Republican and Democratic candidates
for governor; and AEA will have millions of dollars more to spend to defeat Republican Legislative
candidates – and thus completely thwart our goal of a Republican majority in the Legislation in 2010.
It’s urgent that we vote and get our friends to vote to counter the Democrat cross-over votes!

Now is the time for Republicans to look beyond Bentley’s persona. Check voting records, and
be independent thinkers. Please make an INFORMED vote on July 13th -- and feel free to pass this
letter on to your family and friends.

THANK YOU!

WHO IS REP. ROBERT BENTLEY?
Please take one minute to read the following and understand why Rep. Bentley is
an apologist for AEA and why he bashes Gov. Riley to please gambling interests.

VOTING RECORD

Education Reforms: Bentley consistently votes against Republicans and with AEA and
Democrats on education reforms. Bentley voted against pay-for-performance bonuses, against school
choice, against providing liability insurance for teachers to take educators out from under the thumb
of AEA, and against requiring criminal background checks for educators. He voted for the Teacher’s
Tenure Act which allowed a teacher who seduced a 14-yr. old student to continue to collect her salary
while in jail, and for giving tenure to school janitors, lunchroom workers, and bus drivers.

Ethics Reform: Bentley voted “present” instead of standing with other Republicans to vote “no”
against the corruption of double dipping.

AEA: Bentley voted “present” 28% of the time when AEA interests were involved. He voted for AEA
66% of the time. He voted against AEA only 6% of the time.

Convicted Felons: Bentley voted twice to move along a bill restoring rights to convicted felons.

Health Care: Bentley voted to kill a bill which would have made health care more affordable for
businesses and their employees through increased tax deductions; he sponsored a health insurance
coverage mandate identical to one enacted in Obamacare; and he voted for a $13.3 million tax
increase on nursing home beds. (He voted for other tax increases as well! He is no fiscal conservative!)

62% Legislative Pay Raise: Bentley had no problem taking the 62% pay raise the state
legislature passed for itself in 2007; but now, after eight years in the legislature and after he decides to
run for governor, he decides he won’t take a salary as a legislator or as governor.

Gambling: Bentley voted YES to the bill that would allow bingo slot machines to be run at
Victoryland in Macon County. This may explain the gambling money his campaigns have taken over the
years and why he is receiving contributions from gambling- related PACs this election cycle.

CONTRIBUTIONS
As a legislator, most of Bentley’s contributions were from AEA and PACs who received their money
mostly from AEA, Trial lawyers, and gambling interests. (Most of these same PACs gave heavily to Larry
Langford.)

FACT SHEET
FOR ROBERT BENTLEY’S VOTING RECORD

EDUCATION REFORM:
HB 42: Bentley voted in 2004 to revise Alabama’s Tenure Act to allow
teachers to continue to receive a salary all the way through their firing
appeals, allowing a teacher who had been convicted and sentenced to 10
years for seducing a 14-year-old student, to collect her salary while in jail.

Bentley also voted to table several Republican amendments to the bill.

Bentley voted to kill the 2010 charter schools bills in committee, voting again with Democrats and not
with Republicans. The non-partisan Center for Education Reform equates Robert Bentley to Democrat
Ron Sparks for his lack of support for charter schools, school choice and performance pay.

ETHICS REFORM:
HB787: Bentley did nothing to clean up the AEA corruption in Montgomery while on the
Internal Affairs Committee. On HB787 which banned double dipping, Bentley voted
“present” instead of standing with Republicans and voting against double dipping. In the same session,
Bentley voted “present” rather than go against AEA and require criminal background checks for
educators of Alabama’s children.

CRIMINALS:
HB104 2003; HB3 2003: Bentley voted twice to move along a bill to restore voting
rights to convicted felons.
HB61 2004: Bentley voted twice to allow habitual offenders sentenced to life without parole to
have the ability to be released back into the public on parole.
HB538 2007: Bentley voted to allow criminals sentenced to parole to get off the hook after two
years on parole, regardless of their original sentence.

HEALTH CARE:
HB56 2009: Bentley sponsored a health insurance coverage mandate identical to one
enacted in Obamcare. By mandating coverage for dependents through age 27, HB56 would have
driven up the costs of insurance on all Alabama businesses that try to provide health insurance
for their employees and for those trying to buy single coverage.

HB266 2004: Bentley voted for a $13.3 million tax increase on nursing home beds.

GAMBLING:
HB660 2003: Bentley voted “yes” to the bill that would bring bingo slot machines to
Victoryland in Macon County.
