Seven Things to Know about the EPAs Amalgam Rule

After years of working with the ADA
and addressing dentists concerns, the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
released a final rule on Dec. 15 requiring
dental practices nationwide to install
amalgam separators. Here are seven things
you need to know about the rule:

4. Most dentists will not be required

to comply with the rule untilthree
years from now, at the end of 2019.
Dentists who already have separators are
grandfathered in for 10 years. Offices
that open after the effective date will
need to be in compliance upon opening.

1. The ADA believes this new rule, which

is a federal standard, is preferable to a
patchwork of rules and regulations across
various states and localities.

5. The rule closely follows ADAs own best

management practices (BMPs) and
incorporates three of those BMPs:
Requires use of separators;
Prohibits flushing waste amalgam
(including waste from traps or filters)
down the drain; and
Prohibits the use of bleach or
chlorine-containing cleaners that may
lead to the dissolution of mercury from
amalgam when cleaning chair-side traps
and vacuum lines.

2. The new rule meets the nine

principlesestablished by the ADA House
of Delegatesas a condition for ADA
support for a national rule.
3. The ADA has developed a number of
resources to aid member dentists with
questions they may have regarding
compliance. These resources are available
atADA.org/RecycleAmalgam.

6. A number of dentists are exempt from

the rule, including:

Dentists who practice in oral pathology,

oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral
and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics,
periodontics, and prosthodontics;
Dentists who do not place amalgam and
only remove amalgam in unplanned or
emergency situations (estimated at less
than 5 percent of removals); and
Dentists who operate mobile dental
units.
7. Since 2013, ADAs Business Resources
has partnered withHealthFirst, a vendor
that offers ADA member dentists special
pricing on an amalgam separator device
that will meet the federal regulatory
requirements.Learn about the due
diligencethat was performed before

Indiana strikes GOLD twice!

The American Dental Association

recognizes the Drinks Destroy Teeth App
with the 2016 Golden Apple for Public
Health! The free interactive educational
App illustrates the destructive effect sugar
and acid in soft drinks, sports drinks and
energy drinks inflict on teeth. Importantly,
oral health prevention in a technologically
relevant, mobile format connects with a
Diane Buyer, DDS
youthful audience. The Drinks Destroy
Teeth program in its sixth year received the
2011 ADA Golden Apple. It was hailed as, the most innovative
public health initiative in the nation.
The App is free, fun and educational in terms of health, science
and vocabulary. The centerpiece is a movable 3D mouth depicting
acid erosion, plaque, white spot lesions, decay and fluoride. Each
condition features an explosion box with clinical photos and a link
to a glossary for terms.
The interactive Power of pH with video, along with, The
Scoop on Sugar lab and video demonstrate the strength of acid
and amount of sugar in popular drinks. A quick five question quiz
brings the lessons together. If one can answer the quiz, the youthful
consumer will grasp the importance of acid, sugar, plaque and decay.

ADA News: D4346 New Scaling

Procedure Code Effective Jan.1
Its here Dentists may use D4346 Scaling in
the generalized presence of moderate or severe gingival
inflammation full mouth, after oral evaluation as of Jan.
1. This code reflects the procedure for patients with gingival
disease and no attachment loss. Dentists who have delivered the
procedure have not been able to document and report it with
an appropriate CDT code until now.
This CDT 2017 addition has been the subject of two
ADA News articles, a guidelines document posted on ADA.org,
and a webinar that has been accessed by thousands of dentists
and practice staff.
To learn more about this procedure and its new code,
either for the first time or to refresh your memory, visit the
CDT Code education page on ADA.org. Search for Guidance
on the D4346 Scaling Procedure to watch the webinar and
download the free publication Guide to Reporting D4346.
The guide, first published in May, has been updated and
incorporates content and feedback from the webinar.

Equipment and Supplies Needed

Dr. Mark Fulton had a full-time
practice in Anderson. He has sold the
practice and moved to Haiti to help
open a dental clinic. He is living in a
mountain village with no electricity or
indoor plumbing. But, Dr. Fulton is
passionate about improving the health care
of the residents of Haiti. He is working
with dental schools to try to train dentists
from Haiti who can be there to care for
their patients. He returns to Indiana on a
quarterly basis.
Dr. Fulton needs your used equipment,
and/or especially any basic and routine
dental supplies and excess samples that you
can donate. He would love to have your
Resin, Bonding agenda, Gauze, Cotton rolls
and any other kind of extra supplies that you
would care to donate. Dr. Fulton has a semi
in Anderson for storage, and he will ship
the contents to Haiti. His goal is to have a
pano and a chair for the clinic, but in the
meantime, supplies are always difficult to get
and are of a more immediate necessity.
Dr. Dave Wolf told Dr. Fulton that

he would try to help him with letting folks

know and collecting the items for him.
1) For dental chair, x-ray, big equipment,
etc., please contact Dr. Fulton directly so
that he can make arrangements for the
drop off. His email is thefultons@aol.com
2) For small items, such as gauze, anesthetic,
resin, amalgam, instruments or any kind
of dental supplies, please drop them off
at Dr. Dave Wolfs office or the IDDS
office. Dr. Wolf will accumulate and
then Dr. Fulton will get them from him
when he is home quarterly. Here are
the addresses you need for dropping off
supplies:
