Observation Stage

Pedagogical Event N°1

During the first class I had to observe on the 8th grade that was something that caught
my attention. The teacher, Ms. Erika, was trying to do her class but some students were
making a lot of noise specially Xaviera. The teacher told her Xaviera please listen to
what I am saying, but Xaviera continued doing it so MS. Erika wrote her name on the
board, she laughed and stayed quiet for a moment, then she continued talking so Ms.
Erika add a line on the bard beside her name. Xaviera then stayed quit for long time but
finally she couldn’t stand it and began to make noise again and the teacher told her
Xaviera look I’m going to add another line to your name , do you know what does it
mean? So Xaviera told her: si miss no hablo mas ahora sí que me callo y le pongo
atención pero porfa no me anote. But Ms. Erika wrote a negative observation in the
class book in order to punish Xaviera.

During the rest of the lesson Xaviera paid attention to the class and stayed quit.

Reflection N°1

The event I mentioned above occurred during the first lesson I observed. The first thing
I thought was that my guide teacher was very strict because she didn’t talked to
Xaviera, she didn’t told her in different ways that she must pay attention to the class, on
the contrary, the teacher warned the student only once and then she just continued
adding lines on the board until she finally wrote the observation in the class book, but
after the lesson finished, when I went to talk to my guide teacher I realized she was
right, that she had made a good decision. She advised me to do the same thing during
my practicum because that was the only way the students control themselves and pay
attention to the lesson. I told her that, that wasn’t my intention but if I was in troubles I
would do it.

For me it was good to observe a situation like that one before starting teaching, since I
was able to know the class immediately, so when I first started doing my classes I
talked to the students and I told them that my intention wasn’t being all the time
screaming and writing their names on the board but that if it was necessary I will do it so
that it will be up to them not to have negative observations in my class and fortunately
my relationship teacher-students has been good and we are getting on very well.
Team –teaching Stage

Pedagogical Event N°2

The event I am going to describe occurred during the second day of my team teaching
period in the 1st year of high school. Ms. Erika told the students the activity they must do
consisted on describing a member of their family using the adjectives for describing
personality. She also told them that if they had any doubt they could ask her and me
(Miss Deisy).

The students started to do their task and when they had something to ask they didn’t
come to me but only to Ms. Erika. So my guide teacher stopped the class and talked to
the students. She told them (in Spanish): haber niños, que les dije yo acerca de esta
actividad? Que si tenían alguna duda nos preguntaran a las dos a Miss Deisy y a mí,
no solo a mi pues, ella es una profesora también y será la encargada de hacerles
clases hasta fin de semestre así que mejor que le pregunten a ella también para que la
vallan conociendo.

After that, the students started to ask me some questions and everything was okay.

Reflection N°2

When the event previously mentioned occurred I felt very uncomfortable and I thought
maybe the students didn’t want me to do classes. I was afraid. But when they started to
ask me some questions of them told me that it was just because they were shy and
others told me that Ms. Erika was very demanding with them so they didn’t want to
commit errors on the task she has given to them so they thought the best option was to
ask her instead of me.

After I left the school I was thinking about this situation an d I realized that it was my
mistake that the students didn’t want to ask me because during my observation stage
(that was very short) I never had too much time to talk to them and T tried to be
unnoticed inside the class in order to let the class flow and not to disturb it with my
presence. So after this event I decide to interact with any time I could; during the
breaks, before the classes, etc. in order to gain their trust before starting my teaching
process. Fortunately, everything was good and during the rest of my team teaching
period the students allowed me to help them.
Teaching Stage

Pedagogical Event N°3

Teaching: An event that occurred more than once during my teaching process was that
every time I gave the instructions for any activity the students must do, they asked me
repeated times to give the instructions again because it wasn’t clear, so I had to repeat
the instructions around three times every time I wanted them to do some activity in
order to make them understand.

Reflection N°3 “Classroom and Control Issues”

The event mentioned above occurred many times and I didn’t know why that was
happening till I talked to my guide teacher who told me that Ii was giving the instruction
for the activities too fast and I realized she was right. So, I started to explain the
activities not so fast and asking them if they had understood.

Things were getting better, now I didn’t have to repeat the instructions thrice but
sometimes I had to do it again and I didn’t know why.

After my first supervision in which Miss Isabel went to observe one of my lessons, she
noticed I had this problem with the students, that they weren’t catching on the my
explanations completely, so she told me she wanted to talked to me about my lesson
because she needed to give some feedback. I went to see her and she told me that she
had noticed I was having problems on giving the students the instructions for the
activities, I told her I was working on that but that I still didn’t know why there was
something missing because the students couldn’t understand completely my
explanations.

Ms. Isabel told me that what I needed to do was to give more examples and explain
more that once but writing examples on the board for being sure they understood.

I started to do the things as both of my teachers had told me to do them and everything
started to flow and function. My lessons are better now, I am not saying they are perfect
but they have improved a big deal as my guide teacher Ms. Erika had told me.
