let of pump so that tube is positioned vertically. Move
fuel shut-off control to "Run" position. Remove side
cover of injection pump and manually move number
one pump piston with a screv^driver until capillary
tube is about half filled with fuel. While observing
fuel level in tube, slowly rotate crankshaft in normal
direction of rotation until fuel just starts to rise. At
this point beginning of injection occurs and specified
iryection timing mark on crankshaft pulley should be
aligned with timing pointer.
If timing is not correct, adjust as follows: Remove
cover plate from engine timing gear cover and loosen cap screws retaining drive gear to pump drive hub.
Turn crankshaft in normal direction until specified
timing mark on pulley is aligned with pointer. Turn
injection pump drive shaft until beginning of injection is observed in capillary tube as outlined above,
then retighten drive gear cap screws.
72. SPEED ADJUSTMENT. Low idle speed should
be 750 rpm on all models. High idle speed should be
2275 rpm on Model 6240, 2625 rpm on Model 6250,
2620 rpm on Model 6260 and 2465 rpm on Models
6265 and 6275.
Tb adjust engine speeds, first start engine and bring
to operating temperature. Disconnect throttle control rod from pump control lever. To set low idle
speed, remove cap nut from buffer screw (1Fig. 105)
and turn buffer screw out about three turns. Turn
low idle speed adjusting screw (2) as required to set
speed about 20 rpm less than desired low idle rpm
and tighten locknut. Turn screw (1) in until idle speed
increases 20 rpm, then tighten locknut. Increasing
idle speed about 20 rpm with buffer screw (1) should
prevent slow speed surging. To set high idle speed.

remove seal cap from adjusting screw (4) and turn

screw as required to obtain specified high idle rpm.
Place injection pump control lever and speed control hand lever in low idle position, then adjust end
joint on control rod (3) so that it reconnects easily
with pump control lever. Move hand control lever to
low and high idle speed positions and recheck engine
speeds.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
ALTERNATOR AND REGULATOR
All Models
75. OVERHAUL. The voltage regulator (7-Fig.
106) and brush holder assembly (5) can be renewed
without disassembling the alternator.
Ib disassemble alternator, first scribe matching
marks on frame halves (1 and 4). Remove voltage
regulator (7) and brush set (5). Remove through-bolts,
then separate drive end frame (1) from stator frame
(4) being careful not to damage stator wires. Unsolder
wiring leads from rectifier bridge (3). Unbolt and remove rectifier bridge and stator (2).
Remove pulley, fan, washer, Woodruff key and
spacer from rotor shaft. Tkp rotor shaft (11) on block
of wood to push it out of drive end frame. Remove
bearing retainer (12) and press bearing (13) out of

drive end frame. Pull bearing (10) off rear of rotor

shaft.
Inspect all parts for excessive wear or other damage and renew if necessary. Refer to paragraph 76 for
test procedures covering individual components of
alternator
Tb reassemble alternator, reverse the disassembly
procedure.
76. TESTING. Use an ohmmeter or battery
powered test light to check for continuity, grounds
and open circuits.
Tb test rectifier bridge diodes, connect one test lead
to positive terminal and other test lead in turn to
each of the three positive diode leads, then reverse
test lead connections. The diodes should have continuity in one direction only Repeat the test with test
lead connected to heat sink and each of the three

negative diode leads. If any of the diodes indicate

continuity in both directions or no continuity in either direction, renew rectifier bridge assembly.
Check bearing surface of rotor shaft and slip ring
surfaces for excessive wear or scoring. Slip rings may
be polished with fine crocus cloth. Check rotor windings for signs of overheating and renew as necessary.
Check rotor for grounded, shorted or open circuits
using an ohmmeter as follows: Refer to Fig. 107 and
touch ohmmeter probes to points (1-2) and (1-3).
There should not be any continuity. A reading near
zero will indicate a ground. Tbuch tester probes to
slip rings (2 and 3); there should be continuity.
Stator (2Fig. 106) should be checked for shorted
circuit between stator leads and stator frame. With
one ohmmeter lead on stator frame, touch the other
lead to each stator lead. Stator is defective if any
reading shows continuity.

Inspect all parts for excessive wear or damage md

renew if necessary. Bushings (2, 8 and 16) should be
renewed if there is measurable side play of armai ure
shaft.
Use an ohmmeter to check for ground (short) circuits in insulated components as follows: Place one
tester probe on commutator and other probe on armature shaft. Renew armature if there is continuity
between these two points. Make sure that field brushes are not contacting the field housing. Place tester
probe on clean part of field housing and other probe
on field terminal. There should not be continuity. If
there is, field coil is grounded. Place tester prob** on
an insulated brush holder and other probe on brush

STARTER MOTOR
All Models
78. OVERHAUL. Tb disassemble starter motor, unbolt and remove end cover (9Fig. 109), brush carrier plate (7) and field housing (6). Remove solenoid
assembly (1) and drive gear engagement lever (5),
then withdraw armature (14) and drive gear (15) from
drive end frame (3). Remove retaining ring (18) and
thrust collar (17), then slide drive gear (15) and bearing support bracket (4) from armature shaft. If necessary, remove retaining screws and remove field coil
from housing (6).

plate. If continuity is indicated, brush plate should
be renewed.

Tb reassemble starter motor, reverse the disassembly procedure.

ENGINE CLUTCH
All models are equipped with a dry-type, dual plate
clutch assembly mounted on engine flywheel. The
dual clutch plates are actuated independently to control tractor travel and independent power take-off.
The rear clutch plate controls tractor travel and front
clutch plate controls pto.

rod (6Fig. 112) and turn rod as necessary to obtain

specified pedal free travel.
To adjust travel clutch linkage on models equipped
with Star cab, loosen nuts (6Fig. 113) and reposition clutch cable (5) in retainer bracket (7) as necessary to obtain specified pedal free travel.

ADJUSTMENT
All Models
79. Clutch pedal free travel (SFig. 110) and pto
clutch control lever free travel (TFig. HI) must be
adjusted periodically to compensate for clutch disc
wear. Travel clutch control linkage should be adjusted
to provide pedal free travel of 40-45 mm (1.5-1.75
inches) for Models 6240, 6250 and 6260 without cab;
35-40 mm (1.375-1.5 inches) for Models 6265 and 6275
without cab; 25-30 mm (1-1.25 inches) for all models
equipped with Star cab.
Tb adjust travel clutch linkage on models equipped
with safety frame, loosen locknuts (upper locknut
and clevis has left-hand threads) on clutch linkage
