Action to Be Taken After Oil Mist Detector Alarm

1. Reduce speed to slow down level if not already carried out automatically.
2. Contact the bridge for permission to stop.
Operation of an engine with a positive alarm from a mist detector or
bearing temperature alarm is only allowed under the jurisdiction of the Master in
extreme navigational emergency and in any event, must be run as slowly as
possible for as short a period of time as possible with no personnel in the engine
room. Under no circumstances the alarm to be reset until the main engine has
been stopped and the cause positively identified.
3. When engine STOP order is received, stop the engine and close the fuel oil supply
(emcy shut off valve of ME FO inlet).
4. Switch-off the auxiliary blowers and engine room ventilation.
5. Open the skylight.
6. Open the indicator cocks, cut off the starting air and Engage the turning gear. Turn
the engine (continuously from the local panel) with lube oil circulation continuing.
This is a counter measure to avoid piston getting stuck.
Warning: Do not stand near crankcase doors or relief valves.
7. Leave the engine room.
8. Lock the casing doors and keep away from them.
9. Prepare the fire- fighting equipment.
10. When the alarm has gone and at least 30 minutes after stopping the engine, you
can switch off the lube oil pump. With the back of your hand, feel the crankcase
door. If they are cool, then we can proceed further, otherwise wait for them till the
time, they are cooled. You may also look for any sign of paint color change on the
doors.
Warning: Do not open the crankcase until at least 30 minutes after
stopping the engine, to avoid closing the fire triangle with oxygen. When opening
up, keep clear of possible spurts of flame. Do not use naked lights and do not
smoke.
Cut off the starting air and engage the turning gear.
Take off/ open all the crankcase doors.
11. Locate the hot spot.
Feel over, by hand or with a thermo- feel all the sliding surfaces (bearings,
thrust bearings, piston rods, stuffing boxes, crossheads, telescopic pipes, vibration
dampers, etc).
Look for sign of squeezed- out bearing metal, and discoloration caused by
heat (blistered paint, burnt oil, oxidized steel).

Keep possible metal found at bottom of oil tray for later analyzing.
12. Prevent further hot spots be preferably making a permanent repair.
Ensure that the respective sliding surfaces are in good condition. Take
special care to check that the circulating oil supply is in order.
13. After repairing defect, start the circulating oil pump and turn the engine by means
of the turning gear.
Check the oil flow from all bearings and spray nozzles in the crankcase,
chain case and thrust bearing.
Check from possible leakages from pistons or piston rods.
14. Clean and check the correct function of the oil mist detector.
15. Start the engine.
After:

1530 minutes,
one hour later,
when full load is reached:

Stop and feel over.

Look for oil mist.
Especially feel over (by hand or with a "thermo-feel") the sliding surfaces
which caused the overheating.

Fire in Scavenge Air Box

Measures to be taken
1. Reduce speed to SLOW and ask bridge for permission to stop.
2. When the engine STOP order is received, stop the engine and switch-off the
auxiliary blowers. Cover Turbo Charger air suction filter to reduce ingress of air.
3. Stop the fuel oil supply (emcy shut off valve of ME FO inlet).
4. Stop the lube oil supply.
5. Coolant flow through jacket and piston is maintained.
6. Drains to be shut to prevent flow of spark in engine room.
7. Put the scavenge air box fire extinguishing system (steam) into function. To
prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent cylinder(s), the ball valve of the
neighboring cylinder(s) should be opened in case of fire in one cylinder.
8. Boundary cooling of the scavenge trunk may be necessary. Keep clear of
scavenge relief valves, and do not open up for inspection until the engine has
cooled down.
9. Once after confirming that the fire is extinguished, remove dry deposits and sludge
from all the scavenge air boxes.
10. Clean the respective piston rods and cylinder liners, and inspect their surface
condition, alignment, and whether distorted. If in order, coat with oil. Continue
checking and concentrate on piston crown and skirt, while the engine is being
turned (cooling oil and water on).
Inspect the stuffing box and bottom of scavenge box for possible cracks.
WARNINGS:
a. Owing to the possible risk of a crankcase explosion, do not stand near the
relief valves. Violent flames can suddenly be emitted.
b. Do not open the scavenge air box or crankcase before the site of the fire
has cooled down to under 100 C. When opening, keep clear of possible
fresh spurts of flame.
