Theme 5 :
Your government has announced that it wishes to build a military base near your
community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your
community. Do you support or oppose the military base?

My response:
A person who suffers for others, sacrifices his life to save life of others, is a military
man. If my government has announced that it wishes to build military base near my
community, I will support this thought.
It will provide opportunities of new employment as well as new business. If new
people will come, It will increase the demand of local commodities. The same way, new
business will grow to satisfy their needs. Local people will get more employment.
Because of opening new military base, social facilities will improve. New hospitals,
new schools will open. Infrastructure will improve. City will be more clean. Roads will be
better.
By seeing military life, people will be more motivated to join military. Their life and
activities inspire people to join military. In other areas of life also, military people will
inspire everyone as we see them as a respectable citizen. Discipline, patience are some
virtues, we can learn from them. How can one stay calm and live life fully in adverse
conditions, are the best virtues which we should learn from them.
City will be more safe. As security guards will be in city all the time, city will be more
safe from thieves.
But every coin has two faces. One is good and another is bad. If people are more in
city, demand of commodities will be more which makes things more costly. House rent
will be more.Traffic on the roads will increase. It may be attract bad elements in city.
In conclusion, I think every flower grows with thorns. But main concern should be on
flower instead of thorns. In my view, advantages of military camp is more than its
disadvantages. Social up gradation is more important to live.

7. How does advertising influence people's behavior? Use reasons and specific
examples to support your answer.
My response:
How Does Advertising Influence People?
The primary function of advertising is to persuade people to buy something.
Consequently, understanding how advertising influences people is an exercise in
understanding how persuasion techniques are used in advertising to trigger buying
decisions. Persuasion techniques can be either rational, irrational or a combination of
both.
Informational Advertising

Rational techniques are used in so-called called informational advertising because

information is used to help people make informed buying decisions. A defining
characteristic of informational advertising is that it is "product" centered as opposed
"user" centered advertising. Informational advertising provides factual and relevant
information about a product or service. This information is provided under the
presumption of knowing what is important to prospective buyers who can accept the
information as verifiable. Informational advertising might focus on product features and
benefits, product performance, comparisons with competitive products or other factbased arguments that lead consumers to logical and informed decisions.
Transformational Advertising

Irrational techniques are used in so-called transformational or experiential

advertising. Unlike informational advertising that is product-centered advertising,
transformational advertising is user-centered advertising. This form of advertising is
based on the promise of a singularly unique user experience that the product or service
delivers to users, which cannot be replicated by competing brands. Transformational
advertising promises user experiences that generally improve one's quality of life, such
as more fun, more glamorous, more exciting, warmer, richer and more satisfying.

Transformational advertising attempts to link the experience communicated in the
advertising with the experience of brand usage such that the experience and the brand
are interconnected.
How Does Color Affect Advertising?
Irrational Techniques

Irrational techniques in advertising appeal to people's emotions. Emotional appeals

attempt to substitute intuitive judgment for logic in the purchase decision-making
process. This intuitive approach to decision-making is dependent on how people "feel"
about the brand and the company behind the brand. This is a matter of trust. People
who hold advertisers in high regard in terms of trust are more inclined to make decisions
based on judgment rather than logic.
Emotional appeals obviously won't work when
people don't trust or don't know the advertiser. Therefore, before you can hope to have
success with emotional appeals, you must earn the trust of your target audience. You
have a brand when you have the trust of your audience. Moreover, your brand can
command premium prices, because people readily pay higher prices for brands they
trust.
Implications for Small-Business Owners

If you want to grow the profitability of your business by commanding higher prices
for what you sell, use transformational advertising to build your brand. Fortunately, you
no longer have to use costly mass-media advertising to build a brand. The Internet and
digital marketing techniques now make it possible to gain trust and build a brand by
targeting smaller audiences that could be ideal for your business. You can find these
audiences in online social media communities, such as Facebook and Twitter, just to
name two. Many small-business owners also are having great success with content
marketing. Content marketing is using self-generated information content of interest and
use to target audiences that positions you as the trusted authority in your business
specialty.

Social Networks
Do the names MySpace, Facebook, Orkut, etc. ring a bell? They probably do
because they are some of the most popular sites on the internet today. These sites are
all called 'social networking' sites because they help people meet and discuss things
online. Each of these social networking sites has its own strengths: MySpace is
especially popular among teenagers, Facebook is popular with college age people,
Orkut is especially loved in Brazil, and CyWorld is the site to visit in South Korea. The
common thread between all of these social networks is that they provide a place for
people to interact, rather than a place to go to read or listen to 'content'.
Social networks are considered to be web 2.0. What does this mean? To understand
this, it's important to understand what the original web did (often called web 1.0). Back
in the nineties, the internet - or web - was a place to go to read articles, listen to music,
get information, etc. Most people didn't contribute to the sites. They just 'browsed' the
sites and took advantage of the information or resources provided. Of course, some
people did create their own sites. However, creating a site was difficult. You needed to
know basic HTML coding (the original language the internet uses to 'code' pages). It
certainly wasn't something most people wanted to do as it could take hours to get a
basic page just right. Things began to get easier when blogs (from web log) were
introduced. With blogs, many more people began writing 'posts', as well as commenting
on other people's blogs.

My respeonse:
Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small
rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking
is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is
most popular online.
This is because unlike most high schools, colleges,
or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of
individuals who are looking to meet other people, to
gather and share first-hand information and
experiences about cooking, golfing, gardening,
developing friendships professional alliances, finding
employment, business-to-business marketing and
even groups sharing information about baking
cookies to the Thrive Movement. The topics and
interests are as varied and rich as the story of our universe.
When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These
websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online
community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these
online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, politics and
alternative lifestyles. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you
5

can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other
members and possibly even contacting them.
As I'm sure you're aware, there are dangers associated with social networking
including data theft and viruses, which are on the rise. The most prevalent danger
though often involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they
are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists in the real
world, too. Just like you're advised when meeting strangers at clubs and bars, school, or
work -- you are also advised to proceed with caution online.
By being aware of your cyber-surroundings and who you are talking to, you should
be able to safely enjoy social networking online. It will take many phone conversations
to get to know someone, but you really won't be able to make a clear judgment until you
can meet each other in person. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice;
it will tell you when something doesn't feel right about the online conversations taking
place.
Once you are well informed and comfortable with your findings, you can begin your
search from hundreds of networking communities to join. This can easily be done by
performing a standard internet search. Your search will likely return a number of results,
including MySpace, FriendWise, FriendFinder, Yahoo! 360, Facebook, Orkut, and
Classmates.

Egypt Calls for Return of Ancient Treasures

Museum directors and culture ministers from 16 countries are meeting in Cairo this
week to try and get back ancient treasures. They will discuss strategies to recover
important parts of their heritage that are kept in museums in other countries. Officials
include representatives from India, Greece, Italy, Nigeria and China. Most of their
antiquities were taken centuries ago by invading armies and colonizers. Those
attending the two-day conference will draw up a list of items they want returned. Egypt
wants the return of thousands of ancient Egyptian artefacts currently being kept in
Western museums. The event has been organised by Egypt's Supreme Council of
Antiquities, which is calling for "the protection and restitution of cultural heritage. Many
world famous and iconic items of human history will be discussed. Egypt will call for the
return from Britain of the 2,000-year-old Rosetta Stone. Egypt's archaeology
representative Dr. Zahi Hawass also has a 3,400-year-old bust of Queen Nefertiti high
on his list. Hawass has had a lot of success in recovering antiquities. In the past
decade, he has successfully got back over 30,000 items from overseas. Greece is
fighting another high-profile antiquity battle. It wants the return of the Elgin Marbles, also
known as the Parthenon Marbles, which the British removed from Athens at the
beginning of the nineteenth century. The conference will also ask UNESCO to change
international laws that allow stolen antiquities to be sold and exported.

My response:
Rosetta Stone, Egypt

Discovered in Rosetta, Egypt by a French officer in 1799, this 2,200-year-old black

basalt stone is now a famous artifact is inscribed in hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek
and is believed to hold the key to deciphering hieroglyphics and Egypts past. The stone
was acquired by the British when they defeated the French in 1801, and transferred it to
the British Museum in London in 1802. Although Egypt has continued to push for the
stones return, the British Museum refuses to budge.

Egypt's antiquities chief has teamed up with 25 countries to press their campaigns
to retrieve antiquities that were stolen and even those given as gifts, warning museums
on Thursday that he would "make their lives miserable" if they refused his demands.
Zahi Hawass announced the expanded campaign at a news conference with officials
from the U.S., Greece and Italy. By joining forces with other nations, he aims to add
weight to an escalating campaign that even saw Egypt temporarily severing ties with the
Louvre last year.
"Greece was fighting alone, and Italy was fighting alone, now for the first time we are
united. We will fight together," said Hawass. "But I will tell you: Some of us will make the
life of those museums that have our artifacts miserable."
Chief among the items Egypt wants back is the bust of Nefertiti, which is at Berlin's
Egyptian Museum. Egypt says it was shipped out of the country in 1913 on the basis of
fraudulent papers.
Egypt has also been seeking the Rosetta Stone, the slab of basalt with an
inscription that was the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was taken out of
Egypt in 1799 during French colonial rule and is now at the British Museum in London.
Hawass said a statue of Ramses from the Turin Museum in Italy was also on his "wish
list."
He did not outline a specific strategy for retrieving the items. He said, however, that
he was not threatening to cut ties with more museums refusing to return artifacts, as he
did in the fight with the Louvre.
The process of repatriating cultural heritage is complicated by inadequate local and
international laws and many museums maintain they acquire their artifacts legally and in
a transparent manner.
Determining whether an artifact has even been stolen requires delicate cooperation
between government, law enforcement, museums and antiquities dealers. And
frequently, there are gaps in the historical records.
