Did you know that a childs learning of vocabulary in early grades is a direct predictor of
their success in reading comprehension in upper grades? Rupley, Logan and Nichols
refer to vocabulary as the glue that holds stories, ideas, and content together making
comprehension accessible for children.
We greatly value to the importance of vocabulary at Park, and because of this were now
in our second year of implementing a building-wide vocabulary program called Parks
Power Words. Each week, in each classroom at Park, students are learning new Power
Words. The words weve chosen are the 29 most commonly used verbs that our children
will encounter as they read text and answer questions. To help expand our students
vocabulary and familiarize them with these important words, we introduce one new
word each week.
Teachers take a few minutes each day to engage students in activities to learn about the
new word and what it means. Every year teachers of all grades are teaching these words
so that they become an everyday part of each childs personal vocabulary. The words
weve covered so far this year include: describe, identify retell, compare, contrast,
distinguish, explain, demonstrate, locate, suggest, determine, support, draw,
comprehend, develop, organize, & this weeks word is refer.
Its already been exciting to watch our students take their new learning of these words
and apply to the subjects theyre learning. If youd like to learn more about our Parks
Power Words, please feel free to stop by, or give me a call at 616-669-1970.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Your child has probably brought home an envelope and an information sheet for Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) this week. If you have
not received one there will be extra copies available in the office. The envelope is the same as in years past and it is not necessary to
return the permission slip portion of the envelope, all the children will get to do JRFH during their PE class on either the 13th, 14th, or
15th.
Fundraising envelopes are due Feb. 10th. When they collect their first $5 please send in the little slip showing that theyve reached that
milestone and I can give them their reward. Ive also included an online donation guide sheet that will help guide you through setting
your child up to raise funds online. (Much easier for parents as it will allow you to share via social media and email. J)
The last couple of years weve been on a real hot streak! Weve set two school records with last years total being $8,548.00! In order
for us to match or beat that record we would have to set a per student goal of $21.00. However, instead of doing that, I am
encouraging all of the children to just do their best and focus on the big picture. I want them to focus on how doing little things
together makes a big difference and even a donation of a single dollar helps. This matches with our #PESbettertogether goals and
reminds us to stay humble. Thank you for your continued support!
Stay Healthy,

Upcoming Survey
For the past three years, we have been working on accomplishing our districts long-range planning goals outlined in S.O.A.R. II (Strategic
Objectives to Achieve Results). Teams of teachers, administrators and support staff have been focused on specific goals in the areas of Human
Services, Operations, and Teaching and Learning. S.O.A.R. II points of pride include, but are not limited to, the development and phased
implementation of an elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) special, saving millions of taxpayer dollars
by renovating a former elementary school, renovating all buildings' front office areas to provide an extra level of security, and expanding
community education offerings. A complete report of the many accomplishments can be found on our districts website.
To continue our great tradition of excellence at Hudsonville Public Schools and to elevate our successes, we are asking for your help in the
development of our next strategic plan: S.O.A.R. III. We have completed the first phase of development (Focus Groups) and are very thankful
for the wealth of information we received. Our website contains a summary of findings based on this phase. We are now entering the second
phase in the research; a Randomized Needs Assessment Survey. If you receive an invitation to participate, please consider taking part in
helping us set the direction for the next three years. Later in February, we will open the survey to parents and community members who were
not part of the random selection process. We will email the link to the survey when it becomes available
