Pontiff ordains 5 bishops The fifth newly ordained prelate, Bishop Giorgio Corbellini, who served for some time as the vice
secretary-general of the Governor’s Office for Vatican City State, was appointed in July as president of
the Central Labor Office of the Holy See.

Priestly essence
In the homily of the ordination Mass, the Holy Father underlined the role of the bishop, and all
priests, as “servant.”
It is the “most profound nucleus of Jesus Christ’s mission” and the “true essence of his priesthood,”
he said, to serve and “give yourselves” for God.
Benedict XVI pointed out that Christ has “made the term ‘servant’ his highest title of honor,” thereby
giving us “a new image of God and of man.”
The Pope urged the bishops to be servants who exemplify three characteristics: fidelity, prudence
and goodness.
Regarding the first of these, the Pontiff explained that the servant “is entrusted with a great good
that does not belong to him.”
He continued: “The Church is not ‘our’ Church, but his Church, God’s Church.
“The servant must give an account of the way that he has taken care of the goods that have been
entrusted to him. We do not bind men to us; we do not seek power, prestige, esteem for ourselves.
“We lead men to Jesus Christ and so to the living God.”
“Fidelity is not fear,” the Holy Father clarified, “but it is inspired by love and its dynamism.”

Truly reasonable

Speaking about the second characteristic, Benedict XVI explained, “Prudence means engaging in the
pursuit of truth and acting in a way that conforms to it.”
He exhorted his listeners to become “truly reasonable men, who judge on the basis of the whole and
not according to accidental details.”

The killing of a priest

THE government or its instrumentalities may not have any hand in
the killing of Fr. Cecilio Lucero of late, but common sentiments ride
on the perception that it is most likely so. In fact, some progressive
journalists fed on the report that no less than the commander-in-chief
herself, on her recent visit to Northern Samar, allegedly tagged the
priest as a communist—which is very unlikely—thereby giving a
seemingly tacit order for eventualities.
At this point in time, any finger pointing would be coming from
merely speculative sources until a credible investigation takes
place—if such a thing is miraculously ever possible at all. It
could be a vendetta of some sorts by a local leader who had been
reportedly getting a beating in some of the priest’s “homilies”.
Or it could have been motivated by something else that maybe as
good as anybody’s guess.
Reports, however, say that the conduct of the execution was precise
and professional which again fuel the speculation that only the likes
of a professional operative as the military—that, of course, does
not have the monopoly of the professional or otherwise—could
have launched such an ambush of a subject who had been routinely
guarded by the police until his death because of an imminent threat
to his life.
As if tactically or habitually so, the military has always denied any
involvement in the spate of killings and disappearances that count
almost a thousand now since the assumption of the incumbent
leadership—contrary to the findings of U.N. Special Rapporteur
Prof. Philip Alston that formally tagged military operatives as party
to many of these deplorable incidents.
Be that as it may, but when the present dispensation declared
war against the communist rebels some years back and released
considerable budget for the program, it was hinged on the firm
belief that the military is the only solution to this overstaying
problem that has been dragging along for decades now together

‘Hesus Manghigput’: A filipinized

icon of Jesus the Priest
By Pinky Barrientos, FSP

THE universal Church’s celebration of the “Year for Priests” has

brought the entire ecclesial community into a serious consideration
of the role of priests in the Church today.
Pope Benedict XVI, in proclaiming the “Year for Priests”, said
the celebration is “meant to deepen the commitment of all priests
to interior renewal for the sake of a stronger and more incisive
witness to the Gospel in today’s world.”
The ecclesial event is also aimed to bring the Catholic faithful
together to pray, reflect, celebrate and honor the clergy.

Icon for ‘Year for Priests’
Profoundly moved by the Church’s celebration of the “Year for
Priests”, and its significance in the life of the faithful, a religious
brother got inspired to produce an icon that would somehow
convey the meaning of priesthood.
The icon has the title of “Hesus Manghigput” (Jesus Celebrator)
written on alibata script (an ancient Filipino alphabet) to convey
a “filipino” idea. The term “manghigput” refers to priests in the
animistic tradition of Central and Southern Philippines.
The artwork has the central image of Jesus the Priest holding
a chalice and a host, two meaningful Eucharistic symbols. Jesus
is flanked by minor images of Melchizedek the High Priest and
St. John Mary Vianney, representing the “priesthood” of biblical
