SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES

PEACE SUNDAY

Dear Parishioners,
I saw the Spirit coming down on him from heaven like a dove and resting
on him.
I dont know if youve ever experienced moments of great peace. I imagine Jesus experiencing
serene peace when he was standing in the river Jordan, with the Holy Spirit coming down on him
from heaven like a dove and resting on him.
We might experience serene peace from time to time perhaps. But for most of us, it is just a
random experience. Why? Because the world, and our hearts, are filled with violence. We
experience violence in the world when we hear of war in the Middle East, and when we meet
those victims of violence here in West Green. We also experience violence and the temptation to
do violence at work, with our husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, parents, children, brothers and
sisters, people at school, or even violence against ourselves with addictive and compulsive selfdestructive behaviours, such as abusing people, drink, drugs, gambling, pornography, and/or
self-harming.
How do we experience peace? Peace comes from Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away
the sin of the world, and our personal sins. When we know our sins are forgiven by Jesus, he
gives us the grace, through his death on the cross, to conquer violence in the world. We conquer
violence not with violence but by becoming peace-makers. A peace-maker first listens to and
understands the aggressors position. Why should we listen to and understand an aggressor?
Because Jesus has listened non-judgementally and forgiven us when we have done violence.
Knowing this we are able to confront another aggressor in charity and begin to open a dialogue
with them, potentially leading to peace. This may or may not succeed. As Christians we must not
be afraid of the possibility of confronting aggression and violence with non-violent and firm love.
This may cause us to suffer violence, but were not alone in this.
Jesus was not a meek and passive pacifist. When the time was right, Jesus confronted the violence
of the Evil One and sin, once and for all. Jesus Passion was to conquer violence, sin and death, by
intentionally suffering violence for love of the world. On this Peace Sunday, Pax Christi, the
Peace of Christ, I pray that we experience the peace of being forgiven by Jesus, the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world. I pray that we become greater peace-makers by confronting
the violence in the world out of love that Jesus has for us who do violence. I pray that we may be
given the grace to suffer violence in love when the time comes.
Remember Jesus words: Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you
and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward is great in heaven. (Matthew 5:10-11)
God bless,
Fr. Damian

due to the great concentration of
greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrogen oxides ) released mainly as a
result of human activity The problem is
aggravated by a model of development
based on the intensive use of fossil fuels,
which is at the heart of the worldwide
energy system. (LS 23)
