PHOENIX OF COLOPHON FR. 5 DIEHL

(I) Either (a) OaTt'; or (b) daTeewl' plus MJV must be corrupt. If (b) is
the case, then Casaubon's daTewv (for the transmitted daTe(!wv) combined
with Gulick's S'fJ1' (for the transmitted EWV) seems to be the most likely emendation.
(2) However, I hate to sacrifice the transmitted daTe(!Wv. For, after all,
Thales was the first Greek astronomer. Cf. Diog. Laert. I, 23: oouet oe (sc.

daT(!ooyov nclvrwl' :n;(!eavTaTol' ao<p{1Jt.

(Incidentally, the form daTeow, for daTwv, does not seem to be established).
(3) Consequently, I would consider the trivial OaTt'; as a corruption.
So did Gerhard, but his reading [aTWe (for oan,;) is not convincing palaeographically. Thus read:
eaij,; (oe), yvwaT1J'; daTe(!Wl' ov'ljtaTO';
rl'WaT1J'; was misread by
