Purpose: Opening Statement of Value for Days Lessonthe WHY

Today, students will continue their work with identifying topics and creating
theme statements from them. My students will continue to experience these skills
in the context of high-quality literature, and this direct instruction will help them
as they struggle to transition learning skills in isolated, small texts, to texts that
are larger in length and scope. An understanding of the concept of theme, other
than leading to success on assessments and standards, allows a reader or
audience to experience and analyze a piece of art or literature on a more complex
level. Through the creation of a Found Poem, students will experience writing in a
less-threatening format. the activity will also reinforce their concepts and
expressions of theme.

Lesson Procedures: (Introduction, Development, Conclusion)

At the start of class, I will pass back students Clock handouts from Tuesday, so
they can be reminded of inferences and evidence that they made in August
2026. These have been graded and include comments from me.
I will then guide students through their R.A.C.E. practice, providing a model to
review expectations.
As students begin to finish, I will introduce Found Poetry with a PowerPoint that has
examples and rules to follow.
As students finish their constructed responses, they will be given an envelope filled
with individual words that they will use to create a Found Poem that reflects their
theme paragraphs.

Materials and Resources:

11 copies of Friday Theme Work
Colored pencils
Found Poetry PowerPoint or handout
11 Found Poetry envelopes
Music for students to listen to while creating poetry

Assessments and Assignment:

Students constructed responses will be grade according to the 5point rubric.

Students Found Poems will be collected. I would like to be able to
post them up in the classroom once I have approved them.
