not caref ul.

How doe s wind affe ct our bodie s,

according to TCM ?
In Chinese Medicine, w ind can negatively aff ect our bodies
in tw o w ays. It can either invade our bodies f orm the
outside (external w ind), or it can be internally generated
due to a w eakened immune system (internal w ind). The lungs is the organ that is most attacked by the
external w ind, and the liver is the organ that is most related to an imbalance in the liver. A
w ind-imbalance inside our bodies is ref erred to as pathogenic wind in Chinese Medicine.
Exte rnal w ind of ten aff ects the lungs

What are the symptoms of TCM wind?

In TCM, w ind has and upw ard movement w hich can
cause problems in head & f ace, and even lead to
w eakness and paralysis in f ace muscles. Since w ind
causes movement, symptoms of shaking, tw itching, and
spasm are usually involved.
There is also a connection betw een w ind and he adache s
/ m igraine s . According to TCM, headaches and migraines
are triggered by invasion of w ind and heat. This causes
meridian obstructions, and disturbs the blood and qi f low in
the head, w hich in turn can lead to headaches or migraines.
Hypertension can induce and aggravate pathogenic w ind symptoms. Stroke is regarded as and
extreme upw ard movement of w ind into the brain, according to Chinese Medicine. How ever, most
symptoms of pathogenic w ind are not lif e threatening, but some can be disabling. Below are examples
of pathogenic w ind symptoms:
headaches
common cold, inf luenza
sinus inf ection
sore throat & certain cough
itchy sensations and rashes on skin, in nose & eyes
allergies
eczema
hair loss
eye disorders
early stage rheumatism
Other examples of pathogenic w ind symptoms that are less common are:
epilepsy
Bells Palsy
Parkinsons disease
stroke
coma

What about wind directions?

According to TCM, w ind directions play an important role w hen it comes to pathogenic w ind

symptoms. Depending on the w ind direction, some organs / meridians are more aff ected than others.
This can be very usef ul inf ormation.
For example, if you of ten get he adache s or m igraine s w hen its w indy outside, it can be of value
to learn about the w ind direction to see w hich organ / meridian that is aff ected and causing the pain.
According to TCM, migraines are triggered by w ind invasion together w ith an unbalanced liver
meridian. Winds f rom the east aff ect the liver, and this is w hy migraines can get w orse by eastern
w inds. Also, dysf unctions of the kidney-, gallbladder-, and stomach-meridian can also develop
headaches.
As you get to know the root problem of your symptoms, the treatments have a greater chance to be
successf ul. Acupuncture, herbs and cupping are of ten used in TCM to dispel pathogenic w ind, see
text further down.
The table below is show ing w ind directions, and how the body is aff ected.
