MARUTHAM ALAI January Issue Page 2

Dear Junior Citizens

Greetings from President of JCI Coimbatore Marutham for 2014, officially called Jc. Pon.Rathnavel (Pon is my
initial FYI)
I am glad to share a few thoughts with you all in the second issue of MARUTHAM ALAI beautifully devised by
our Director Publications, Jc.P.Karthikeyan. I have known Karthikeyan (Trainer is his pet name) for more than
five years now and I have admired him for his consistency to innovate. In this issue too, he has tried out new
things. I am sure you would like it.

2014 is my 13th year in JCI and I have been chucking away from the top chapter role for a long time. However it
was bound to happen one year and that year happened to be 2014. In this 13 years, I have seen many
inspirational Junior Citizens and I have learnt a lot from each one of them. In specific, there have been five
passionate JCs who have united to impact my life. I joined JCI because of Jc.Jegan (Indcity) who infused in my
mind that joining JCI by 20 would do a world of good. He was my mentor and he gave me many opportunities to
prove myself way back in early 2000s. Jc. Rajkumar(Metropolis) has always been my Drona on accelerating
ones thoughts and action. Jc.Palaniappan (Indcity/ZP) has been a living example for raw passion towards an
organisation. Jc.Vichu (Indcity) taught me that the best way to do things is to keep it simple. Jc.Sandy (Cosmo)
has been a great source of advice and it was from him that I picked that the iron is to be struck only when it is
hot. There are a lot of other Jaycees like Jc.Sakthivel, Jc.Kathirvel, Jc.Dheenadhayalan, Jc.Mahadevan, Jc.Balu,
Jc.Murugaraj (all Past ZPs), Jc.Singaram, Jc.Paresh, Jc.Ganesh, Jc.Ramesh, Jc.Valliammai (all Cosmo),
Jc.Lakshmi Narayanan (Ooty), Jc.Venu (Gobi), Jc.Ramasamy (Tirupur), Jc.Sathish (Salem), and the whole lot of
Indicitians who come to my mind when I think of JCI. I had picked up one habit or thought process in my life
from these Jaycees and I request all members to try the same. Apart from the high order learning we derive
from the training programmes, I believe there is a lot to learn from our fellow Jaycees.
As we Unite to Impact in 2014, I am sure JCI Coimbatore Marutham will make its 6th year count and hold a place
for itself amidst the wonderful chapters of Zone 17. Before I close, I bring some news from our Editor. He had
brought out 7 new sections in the last issue. In this issue, he is continuing with Top Ten, Story Board and JCBI
while introducing 2 more sections namely Date & Dots and Cheese & Freeze. Hope you like them. Take your
plunge into the waves of MARUTHAM

JCIBI

Jc.
C.William (Bill) Brownfield
March 1919 February 1971
Author of JCI Creed

Bill Brownfield exhibited early leadership qualities at the age of ten when he formed a club
called The Band of Mercy, dedicated to showing kindness to animals. Brownfield was heavily
involved with church and social issues throughout his youth. Brownfield made a career
running a coal mining operation and his coal business took him to Ohio where he was invited
to join the Columbus Jaycees in 1943. Brownfield quickly became involved in the
organization and embraced the activities of the Jaycees. In 1945, at the National Convention
in Milwaukee, Brownfield inquired as to the Jaycees official position on the time honored
free enterprise system. He was told that no formal policy or position existed. This planted
the idea that it would be beneficial for an organization of the Jaycees stature to have an
official policy. Brownfield traveled to Chicago and researched the existence of a Jaycee Creed
or Statement of Principles. When he found that none existed. Brownfield thought about the
need for a Creed constantly and in July of 1946, he wrote the Jaycee Creed in a car parked
just west of Junction City, Ohio. Brownfield consciously rejected the idea of mentioning God
in the Creed as the Jaycees were not a sectarian organization but included men of all faiths.
Brownfield submitted his work to the local President for presentation to the Board of
Directors for adoption, and after much analysis and debate, the motion to adopt the Jaycee
Creed was narrowly passed in 1946. The World Congress in Rio in 1948 approved the creed at
international level. The 65 words creed is a guide after which Jaycees may pattern their
everyday lives.

TOP TEN

We asked our Secretary, Jc.N.Giresh to list down ten favourite delicacies and that in eating
order. A man of appetite, Giresh wrote down the list in two minutes. He prefers to start on a light note with
some TENDER COCONUTS, go dry with some SITAFAL PISTA, go marine with CHILLI PRAWNS and then turn
into vegetation with HYDERABAD DHUM MUTTION BIRIYANI and have PEPPER CHICKEN for company. He
would then trace back the sea with VANJARAM FRY and top it up with the Chinese Omelette Dish FOO
YUNG. Vegetarianism then finds a place courtesy some SCHEZWAN FRIED RICE which is followed by the
desert MILK SEMIYA PAYASAM. And nothing but SWEET BEEDA to provide the finishing touch. I bet you are
hungry, now.
(P.S. In the next issue, our IPP Jc.Duke will provide food for thought with his ten favourite books)

STORYBOARD

Story Courtesy Jc.Prof.M.Nagarajan

A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidly
without an appointment into the president of Harvard's outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had
no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge. She frowned. "We want to see the president," the man said softly.
"He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped. "We'll wait," the lady replied. For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would
finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't. And the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though
it was a chore she always regretted to do. "Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave," she told him. And he sighed in
exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and
homespun suits cluttering up his outer office.
The president, stern-faced with dignity, strutted toward the couple. The lady told him, "We had a son that attended Harvard for one year. He loved
Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him,
somewhere on campus. The president was not touched; he was shocked. "Madam," he said gruffly. "We can't put up a statue for every person
who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery". "Oh, no," the lady explained quickly. "We don't want to erect a
statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard. The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun
suit, and then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in
the physical plant at Harvard." For a moment the lady was silent. The president was pleased. He could get rid of them now. And the lady turned to
her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a University? Why don't we just start our own?" Her husband nodded. The president's
face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. And Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, travelling to Palo Alto, California where they
established the University that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.
Moral - You can easily judge the character of others by how they treat those who can do nothing for them or to them.
