San Bernardino Shootings: Disarmament or More Gun Control?
Gun and related violence are consuming more and more American lives now than ever
before. This is in spite of a widespread debate on gun control, a topic that is increasingly getting
more attention as a convenient political campaign tool. On average, 200 Americans visit
emergency-room care with gunshot wounds, and approximately 3 out of 100,000 people
involved in these visits never quite make it back to their feet (Lott 27). These statistics only
reveals how ineffective our present gun legislations have proven to be, and therefore, an
immediate call for a revision, or just total disarmament is needed.
Opponents of Obamas Gun-Control push have now gone ahead to even invent politics of
no-fly list (Brady Campaign). An already futile policy that calls for thorough background check
on anyone wishing to legally possess firearm in America. To them, selling guns to individuals of
questionable character, personality disorders or antisocial ideology, is the reason for widespread
violence. All these, just to maintain the status quo, or to buffer their political and financial
muscle (Lott 13). This argument very irrational considering that even the horrible Californian
shooting did not involve illegally obtained firearms or were the perpetrators found to be
deranged in some ways.
The notion that owning armory keeps individual safe by protecting them from potential
attack from outlaws, is baseless and misleading (ProCon.org). Violent cultures characterized by
gun ownership only breed violence. People buy guns with intentions of using them and are,

therefore, most like to find reason to use them. Besides countries that allow for unrestricted
public gun-trade, like the United States, records higher gun related killings, on average, than any
of their stricter developed world counterparts, such as the UK (ProCon.org).
It is about that time we disregard what the founding Father might have meant in the
Second Amendment and turn our eyes to the situation as it is now. Possession of fire arms might
have meant more sense to the historical war-torn human world, but that may not be said for
today. Redefining the current gun legislations to fit the BradyCampaign.org initiative is quite
necessary in making this country a safer place.
