Profile of Jiribam

Jiribam was a small town situated in East Imphal which is recently declared as a district and is
also known as the Western Gateway of Manipur.. It was notified under the Assam Municipal
Act, 1923. It was in the year 1976 when it came under Manipur Municipalities Act. In recent
times there has been a great development in the town. New hospital, multi utility complex and
sports complex are some of the recently established ones. The town is the main hub of Manipur
as it has the only railway station of the state.
Now, coming to the demographics of the town, it constitutes a population of 7,343 out of which
male population is 3,824 and female population is 3,519. Out of the total population Hindus
constitutes the maximum number of population followed by Muslims and then Christians. The
town has an average literacy rate of 73% higher than the national average of 59.5%.
This newly declared district is a place of greenery and natural beauty. The residents of Jiribam
are very eco-friendly and constantly strive to conserve the natural resources beauty and wealth
of the place. The region is rich in forest resources like timber, cane, bamboos, brooms etc.,
including a variety of plants having medicinal values.
The soil of the region is highly rich with different types of soil which varies from sandy to loam
and clayey to loam having variety of colours from yellowish to bluish grey. According to the
prevailing weather condition, the climate of the town is humid tropical by short winter and long
summer with heavy rainfall. About 20-30% of annual rainfall occurs during the pre-monsoon
season in the month of May whereas about 60-70% of rainfall occurs in rainy season. It is
neither too hot nor too cold throughout the year.
Jiribam is highly humid throughout the year. The highest relative humidity occurs during
monsoon season, more than 96%. It is maximum of 100% and minimum of 79% in June. The
topography of the region is such that the capability of wind occurrence is high in these features
and winds are usually moderate. The town is the one of the cloudiest region of the state with a
thick and heavy clouded skies during May to September.
Agriculture and horticulture are the main occupation of the residents. The main crops of the
area paddy, maize, potato, vegetables, sugar cane, pulsr, oil seeds, chilli, onion, ginger,
turmeric, coriander, fruits and nuts.
People of different culture and religion are residing together peacefully in the region,
celebrating all the festivals together. This is an example of harmony and peace for the nation
as a whole.
