DEPARTMENT
Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is the oldest technical institute in the country, being the successor
institution of the first engineering institute - the Roorkee College established in 1847 and its transformation
as the Thomason College of Engineering, and then the first technical university of independent India - the
University of Roorkee. Its rich tradition of excellence in training, research and extension and its
contribution to national development spurred the Govt. of India to induct it as an IIT on September 21,
2009, through an Act of the Parliament. Roorkee was the first institute to start Masters programme in
Engineering in 1955 and was made the nodal institute for updating and upgrading the quality of teachers of
various technological institutions through Masters and Ph.D. programmes. The institute has the most
modern infrastructure for practical academic and research training through its laboratories and multimedia facilities under the guidance of the high quality faculty in sciences, engineering, humanities, social
sciences and management. It has the best infrastructure for students - hostels, sports, indoor games, and
promotes cultural and creative activities through various societies and clubs. The modern amenities
created recently are the envy of any modern progressive institution.
In the current academic year 2014-15, the number of passing-out students are as follows:

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
The Department and Engineers India Limited (EIL) jointly developed a novel
wet-air oxidation process for the treatment of spent-caustic streams from
refineries. The technology has been scaled up in a pilot plant by EIL and was
tested at IOCL, Panipat refinery. The technology is now being
commercialized in the Bhatinda refinery.
Development of technology packages and simulation model for prediction of
plants performance based on evaluation of the plants already established.
The Department has been made the nodal agency for monitoring of the
existing biogas plants in India by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy,
Govt. of India.
