assistance on their own two hands worksheet.
Students achieving above grade level expectations will write their own sentence without teacher
assistance on their own two hands worksheet.
3 Assessment/Monitoring Learning:

Type of Assessment (describe):

Informal observation will be used to assess this lesson. Observation will occur during the class read
aloud and discussion and notes will be recorded after the lesson. A rating scale will be used to
document their understanding and completion of their own two hands worksheet. Students will turn in
their own two hands sheet to be looked at by the teacher after the lesson.

Monitoring of Progress: (describe)

Monitoring of progress will occur during review of previous learning, the read aloud, class discussion
and own two hands activity.
*List any special accommodations or modifications in the learning plan required by student needs.

Students achieving below grade level expectations will have their ideas written out from them on the
white board. This also serves as a launching off point for the students meeting and exceeding grade
level expectations.

Why have you chosen this approach for assessment?

I have chosen this approach for assessment because observation is an appropriate way
to asses a large group, teacher led activity. A rating scale will be used for their activity
sheet in order to assess how they are doing with their grammar usage and writing skills.

Self-assessment/Reflection of the Lesson (analysis and rationale):

1

Central Focus:

5/24/2016-rev.

The central focus was well met in the respect that the students were extremely engaged about the life of Dr. Martin
Luther King and were able to apply the concept of making a difference to their own lives.
Learning Experience Plan:
The learning experience plan went well and was immediately engaging with the clip from Kings I Have a Dream
Speech. The students had learned a bit about Martin Luther King the Day before so the review of previous learning was
successful and added to the new knowledge that the students learned from the story Martins Big Words. The flow of
this lesson was very successful and I would not change anything about this portion.
Supporting Learning Plan:
The materials were successful especially the use of the people color crayons. This added more than I expected to the
lesson as the students really took it seriously trying to find a color that represented them. I even had a student discover
that he could make one of his hands and one of Dr. Martin Luther Kings. These simple crayons added so much to the
activity.
Assessment/Monitoring Learning:
Informal observation was useful in the lesson and the rating scale was helpful in assessing the writing portion of the
activity. The writing prompt was easily assessable in looking at proper sentence structure and grammar which we have
been working on a lot in first grade!
Special Accommodations or Modifications in the Learning Experience Plan, Supporting Learning, or
Assessment/Monitoring required by student needs.
As I had expected, many of the students took advantage of having their idea spelled out for them on the board. Several
students achieving above grade level expectations wrote their own sentence and ideas and I encouraged several to
expand and write even more. This lesson was easily differentiated and accommodations were met.
