Bulk Bag Conditioning System

Discharging bulk bags containing material that has solidied, hardened or agglomerated can cause serious operational bottlenecks.
Conditioning and emptying bulk bags can be dangerous if the
proper equipment is not utilized. This new patented system utilizes
hydraulically actuated, twin heavy wall tubular stainless steel pivoting conditioning arms. Each conditioning arm features "v-shaped"
tubular breaker proles that safely and efciently return solidied
materials to a free-owing state. A rotary lift table positions the
bulk bag for complete material conditioning on all sides, as well as
the top and bottom. The unit features an ultra compact footprint
and machine guarding for operator safety. For more information

Theory & practice in moving granular
materials and powders

Its a common misconception that powder behavior can be

described by just understanding its owability, and that owability
is a discrete property that can be quantied by a single number.
This just isnt the case. Despite comparable physical and chemical
properties, loosely packed and tightly packed powders dont act
the same. The same is true regarding the inuence of aeration and
consolidation. Read more on page 28.

Patented Pneumatic Conveying System
The Smoot Company has received a patent for
its ECOPhase pneumatic conveying technology.
This pneumatic conveying system uses a specially
designed entrainment device called a Magveyor to
allow a system to operate continuously while achieving
high solids loadings and allowing the conveyor to run
more efciently. This technology helps users to better
achieve their goals in reducing energy consumption
and costs, in some cases, by over 50% when compared to traditional dilute or dense phase pneumatic
conveying systems, Smoot says.

Advanced Dissolved Gas Control

Liqui-Cel Membrane
Contactors help users
improve efciency and
reduce costs by removing dissolved gases from
water. Oxygen and carbon dioxide can cause
costly boiler, piping
and process equipment
deterioration. In ion
exchange systems, the presence of CO2 leads
to high resin bed regeneration rates and
increased chemical consumption. Liqui-Cel
Contactors are capable of achieving
< 1pbb O2 and < 1ppm CO2, and their compact design is ideal when space is limited.
For more than 20 years, they have been used
around the world in ultrapure and industrial
water processes.

Productivity Perspectives
To grow our digital- and print-media brand
Until this moment, maybe you werent aware
the digital and print magazine Flow Control is
a sister publication to Processing.
From here forward, given the inter-connectedness of the industries, technologies
and management roles the two publications
cover, these inherent synergies should be more
apparent, to the beneit of you readers.
Thats because our mutual parent, Grand
View Media Group, of Birmingham, Alabama,
has brought the two publications together in
something called the Process/Flow Network,
to better inform our executive, engineering
and managerial audiences as to innovative,
productivity-enhancing equipment, technology
and service solutions, as well as emerging best
practices, found across the process industries.
For one, with the OEM/System Integrator
editorial supplement, well bring readers information about the third-party services that
are emerging as critical elements in enabling
increasing North American process-industry
production.
Anatomy of a publication
Flow Controls focus is process measurement
& control, including lowmeters, valves, pumps
and other type instrumentation. Besides the
OEM/System Integrator, Flow Control is home
to The Pump Guy, who will now be sharing his
expertise with Processing readers.
As you know, Processing is about equipment, instrumentation and best-practice

solutions, primarily in the chemicals, food &

beverage, pharma and oil & gas industries,
but in other process industries as well. We also
publish Water/Waste Processing and Global
Processing, an all-digital magazine.
OEM/System Integrator looks at component solutions and best practices for technical
professionals involved in systems integration
or OEM design. It speaks to an audience that
includes those assembling luid- and bulk-handling process system solutions from component technologies.
What we hope
We hope that you have noticed other
changes to our magazine the last several years.
Individual articles are meant to be of interest
across industries, read well for a sophisticated
audience and be more succinct.
The editors feel that the biggest stories in
the industrial world today are about a restructuring of North American industry to allow
best use of scarce resources. Besides capital
investment, this involves recruiting, training
and retaining scarce qualiied personnel. The
result will be an era much unlike the one that
preceded it.

BP Atlantis shreds tough food

debris with dual-shafted grinder
Keeps waste in its place on worlds deepest-moored semi-submersible oil platform
By Kevin Bates
Considered one of oil-company BPs largest
and most technically challenging projects, the
Atlantis platform sits nearly 200 miles south
of New Orleans and reaches down more than
7,000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico.
Part of the larger Atlantis oil eld, the platform has produced nearly 200,000 barrels
of oil a day since production began in 2007.
Each process and all the activities aboard the
platform must be done in a precise order to
maintain productivity and efciency, and the
crew has no time for unscheduled maintenance or equipment headaches.
However, thats precisely what they were
going through not long ago with their
onboard food waste, and the hassle was costing them valuable time and money.
No more pre-sorting
The original food grinder aboard the
Atlantis was vastly underperforming and
unable to keep up with both the type and
amount of waste that the crew needed to
shred. Laura Quinn, Atlantis process engineer,
recalls the daily struggle the grinder was causing her team.
Since it wasnt strong enough to grind
down bones, a group of us had to presort the
garbage before putting it through the grind-

environments.

The daily survival task of disposing of food waste can be surprisingly

complex in a high-tech environment.

er, says Quinn. It almost defeated the purpose of having a grinder since we were doing
so much of the work.
Quinn began looking for another option that
didnt require any of these preparatory steps
for disposal. She started her search online and
came across the Monster product videos on
the JWC Environmental YouTube page. Seeing

the variety of solids that the Mufn Monster

and Monster Industrial dual-shafted grinders
could take care of so cleanly and easily was
impressive to Quinn and the rest of the crew.
It was a huge selling point for me, especially seeing the grinders cut through things
like whole chickens and apples, says Quinn.
Those specic foods were the ones we had
to deal with by hand before putting them into
the grinder. If we hadnt, we would have to
deal with a clog.
After Quinn contacted JWC Environmental
to get more information on their waste reduction solutions, she was put in connection with
Tom Smith, industrial mid-market manager for
the Monster Industrial product lineup.
The task at hand
The Atlantis had some interesting challenges to contend with, both from a waste reduction standpoint and a regulatory standpoint,
says Smith.
Because the Atlantis is an ocean-based

diameter in order to legally be discharged into
open water. Our food grinders are MARPOLcompliant, which makes them ideal for this very

Smith recommended the Monster Industrial

steel cutters that rotate slowly with high torque
to cleanly and effectively shred troublesome

Once the grinder was installed, Quinn discovered it was almost a perfect t with the
exception of an outlet piece that was a little

emailed JWC to see how we could redesign
the outlet.
Smith responded quickly and worked with
a group of JWC engineers to redesign the

approval. After a new concept was chosen,
JWC sent the updated discharge ange to

Maintenance expertise
restores a
looding separator
Cost of a replacement pump avoided using a
proven methodology
Because the separator stage of an evaporation unit was looding, the technical services
staff at a poultry processing plant was looking
to replace an expensive pump used in its operation. The pumps raison detre was to extract
concentrated chicken broth from the separation
vessel and push it to the next processing stage.
But with product building up in the separator, it seemed a reasonable conclusion that the
extraction pump, as installed, was not working
correctly. However, a call to the supplier, SPX,
soon established the pump was unlikely to
be the culprit and that the plant could almost
certainly be restored to correct operation by
appropriate maintenance.
In fact, a visit by Bob Vail, SPX commissioning
engineer, had the plant up and running again
in just a few hours. That saved the cost of a
new pump and a purchase, which, had it been
made, wouldnt have solved the problem at
hand.
Stepped methods
Vail approached the problem using a proven
troubleshooting methodology. First step was
to eliminate two possible, but unlikely, causes

of the poor process performance. These can

be quickly checked and in most instances eliminated.
The irst step was to check the pump itself.
It is rarely discovered to be the source of the
problem at this stage. The pumps power is
dependent on pump speed and impeller size.
The pump was turning the impellor. It wasnt
connected to a variable speed drive that could
have been reset. It was almost certainly operating correctly.
The second step was to eliminate any blockage. The extraction pump pulls product out
of the separator vessel and pushes it into the
plates of the next stage. If there is a blockage
at the discharge of the pump, or if the plate
xxxxx
oriices
are blocked, the separator vessel will
xxxxx
lood. This too, however, is very uncommon
except where the product is over concentrated
or pre-iltration has failed. This possibility, too
then, was eliminated.
Since there was neither a pump failure nor
blockage, the probable (and most common)
cause of the problem was a vacuum leak at or
around the pump.

Whether working with a separator like the one shown or

other type equipment systems, it's not always safe to assume

that replacing the pump will get things back on track.

Clue-driven examination
When a vacuum leak occurs on the suction
side of a pump for example, at the inlet
mechanical seal it allows air into the pump at
the impeller. Depending on severity of the leak,
this changes to a greater or lesser extent the
pump performance.
A typical symptom of a minor leak is that liquid in the separator builds to a certain level and
stays there, partially looding. The increase in
liquid height creates a positive inlet pressure to
the pump that compensates for the minor vacuum leak. In extreme cases, looding above the
vapor duct from the plate pack results in violent
shaking of the entire separator vessel. This is
dangerous, and in the event such would happen, steam should be stopped and the vacuum
broken immediately.

Pumps, Motors & Drives

In this case example, there was no level control for the separator, connoting a self-leveling
system and therefore no residual liquid level.
Whether vertical or horizontal, the units are
meant to be such that the systems capacity
to extract product exceeds the rate at which it
enters, thus ensuring that there is no buildup.
Any residual level therefore normally indicates a
vacuum leak somewhere below the water line.
Conirm and localize next
To conirm that the problem was a vacuum
leak, Vail switched from product feed to water
and shut down the steam. When the process
had cooled, he turned off the vacuum pump
and slowly broke the vacuum. As expected,
the looding stopped and the vessel pumped
out. This indicated a vacuum leak at or near the
looded area. The pump was sucking air and
would work ine once the net positive suction
head was restored.
As a further check, water was kept circulating
in the separators, without vacuum, and with the
rest of the unit shut down. The feed-low control
valve was then manually closed to isolate the
system on the feed side, preventing water from
the balance tank from being sucked in when

vacuum was applied.

Next, the vacuum was started, the while looking for bubbles in the separator vessel discharge
area caused by air being sucked in through the
leak. A trail of small bubbles indicated a small
leak, and in fact, a larger leak may result in violent eruptions. Note that it is important that the
vessel and the water are cold, otherwise the
water may boil under vacuum, giving a false
result. This is indicated typically by bubbles on
the entire surface of the water.
To localize the leak, all of the clamp ittings
were tightened to see if the bubbles subsided,
which they had.
Victory explained
If the leak had been from the pumps inner
mechanical seal it would be sucking air in from
the service water discharge tubing along with
the service water that should be going on the
loor. The service water line is the poly-low
tubing coming out from between the pump
head and the motor. The test is done by turning
off the seal water to the pump and picking up
the discharge tube to feel if air is being drawn
into it. This would indicate a front seal leak. The
seal should then be replaced.

As a inal step, the process should always be

repeated to verify that all leaks have been corrected. There may, of course, be more than one.
This inal step can involve breaking down all
the product lines below the vessels water line,
replacing gaskets, and maybe even replacing
clamps with good quality-brand clamps. A inal
word of advice: It is vitally important that the
lines and gaskets align without stress. Cut and
weld new lines if needed. If the lines have to be
pulled into position there will be problems in the
future.

Use of Coriolis-based custody

transfer advances with technology
Primary benefit is the accuracy of the measurements available to the involved parties
By Patrick Bartell and Nathan Ehresman

When addressing the needs of measurement operations involving various densities

and amounts of liquid, Coriolis mass owmeters are often chosen for their accuracy,
durability and reduced maintenance costs.
Applications involving custody transfer benet
from their simple and dependable characteristics, as well as their usefulness in advanced
well-site automation systems.
Custody-transfer operations are wholly
dependent on the accuracy and repeatability
of the measurement of the oil that is being
produced. Coriolis meters help remove the
ambiguity from the custody transfer discussion between involved parties and as a result,
Coriolis meters have become the popular
choice in the measurement and allocation of
crude oil and various other fossil fuels in wellsite applications.
When discussing Coriolis mass-owmeters
in relation to custody-transfer operations, the
primary benet is the accuracy of the measurements available to the involved parties. By
measuring the mass of a liquid rather than the
volume, the basic process used by a Coriolis
meter is substantially more reliable than other
available owmeters. For example, the volume

accuracy of the mass owmeter be tested and

proven on a regular basis. This process involves
the measurement of a liquid with a predetermined volume by the owmeter in question
to indicate the difference between the actual
volume of the liquid and the meters indicated
volume. It is in this area that the repeatability
offered by the Coriolis mass-owmeter is a
large advantage, further reinforcing the meter
type as an industry favorite.

of oil in a tank will vary depending on what its

internal temperature is, but the total mass of
the oil will not uctuate. Coriolis meters capitalize on this effect to provide the most accurate
measurement possible.
Nearly all lease agreements require that the

Durability advantages
In terms of durability, Coriolis owmeters
offer clear advantages for custody-transfer
applications. Well sites with owmeters are
normally situated in remote locations and can
take several hours to reach in the event of a
malfunction, so durability is extremely important. As opposed to turbine meters, Coriolis
meters have fewer moving parts and are physically smaller and less complex, avoiding malfunction and reducing maintenance requirements. These characteristics result in lower
repair and/or replacement costs and a higher
return on investment for the operator of the
well site.
Another primary benet of Coriolis mass

Flowmeters

Solid Performance

owmeters is their adaptability for a variety of

applications. From pumping oil at the well head,
shipping it to various collection facilities and nally
transporting it via pipeline or oil tankers, the oil
must be measured repeatedly on multiple skids
and measurement systems. The Coriolis meter
is physically compact and versatile enough to t
within the environment of each of these systems
and provide accurate and repeatable measurements of the oil at each location.
The systems in which Coriolis mass owmeters are used are also advancing, particularly in
supervisory-control, or SCADA, systems on automated well pads. With the increased availability of
high-speed Internet connections and cellular data
services, important well-site information is able to
be transmitted at much higher speeds than in previous decades.
In an automated well pad, the output of the
pump jack typically ows into a multi-tiered separation process, followed by a custody-transfer system
that includes measurement and allocation units. All
of these processes are controlled by one programmable logic controller, or PLC, which sends massive
amounts of information back to a central hub via
radio waves, before that information is converted
and communicated to clients via the Internet. For
these operations, a control scheme encompassing
the entire operation is necessary.
This new process is a vast improvement on previous methods, which required employees to physically visit each well site and record data by hand.
The automation and rapid data transfer available by
new systems results in lower costs and easier identication of trends in the production of well sites.

At the well pad

Including Coriolis mass owmeters in automated
well pads is a way to ensure the accuracy and reliability of remote operations as the basis of scal
transactions in custody transfer agreements. With
the precise measurement available from a Coriolis
mass owmeter, trends such as barrels per day and
water cut can be easily identied. The data can
also be used to make decisions on the locations of
future well sites in the same area as a monitored
remote well site.
As custody-transfer operations become more
advanced and multifaceted, it is vital that all
involved parties can trust in the accuracy and reliability of the source of measurement of the liquid.
Coriolis mass owmeters provide that steady, precise and repeatable measurement for a multitude
of applications and liquid types.

Theory & practice in moving

granular materials and powders
From fundamental phenomena to a pharma-industry feeder example,
including metals-based materials science and FDA regs
By Kevin Parker
Well into the 21st century, we still do not
possess a fundamental understanding of powder behavior, says a prominent page on the
website of Freeman Technology.
Yet, Granular materials are ubiquitous in
nature and are the second-most manipulated
material in industry the irst is water, says
the material scientist Patrick Richard, quoted
on Wikipedia.
For many educated generalists, both of the
above observations might come as a surprise.
But taken together they reinforce the notion
that even for scientists and engineers how the
world really works remains a mystery.
Nevertheless, scientists, equipment and
instrumentation developers, engineers and
industrial managers working with granular
materials and powders have to get things
done day-to-day in an information technology,
software and automation-dominated world,
while at the same time addressing some very
elemental challenges.

something that are as much like behaviors as

they are properties.
In some sense it is said granular materials dont constitute a single phase of matter
but have characteristics of solid, liquid or gas
depending on the average energy per grain.
However, in each state, granular materials
exhibit unique properties.
Most notably, they exhibit pattern-forming
behaviors when excited, vibrated or allowed to
low, including the segregation of unlike grains,

Put into practice

Once having appreciated the unique properties of granular materials and powders, those
charged with their processing and material
handling must turn to more practical issues.
Not long ago, equipment manufacturer,
Schenck Process LLC, Whitewater, Wisconsin,
developed a dry material feeder that met the
needs of the pharmaceutical industry.
Obviously, the irst question is, to what use
are feeders put to in the pharmaceutical industry? These uses include particle-size reduction,
mix-tank and reactor charging, mixing, tablet

Whats the idea?

What must seem most surprising about
granular materials and powders to anyone
irst taking notice is how they seem to exhibit

formation of surface patterns, ripples, dunes

and sandsheets.
Powders are a sub-class of granular material,
with particulates having iner grain sizes and
a greater tendency to clump. The clumping
behavior that causes the individual grains to
cling together is called the Van der Waals force.
Besides segregation, clumping and pattern
forming, other behaviors said to be common
to granular materials include stratiication,
jamming & unjamming, fragility, loss of kinetic
energy, functional shearing, compaction and
something called Reynolds dilatancy.

coating, packaging and continuous granulation.
Equipment capacities and feed rates needed for
the applications must be understood.
Bearing in mind the need for FDA-approved
materials of construction, these included surface
nishes of welds and metals; cleaning processes
that called for frequent dis-assembly; validation
practices; and feeding accuracy.
As is well known, #316 stainless steel is preferred for pharmaceutical industry equipment,
due to its corrosion, chemical and thermal
resistance, say Chad M. Lorenson, pharmaceutical industry business development manager,
and Andreas Ludwig, mechanical engineering
manager, Schenck Process, in an article that rst
appeared at pharmaceuticalonline.com.
Lorenson and Ludwig go on to explain that
EPDM is a widely accepted polymer used for
components that have to be elastic, non-porous
and FDA-compliant. Using EPDM within the
feeders exible hopper as a disposable component eliminated expensive cleaning needs.

cuts, ensuring a machine can be easily cleaned.

Large, smooth surfaces allow access for cleaning
and maintenance and eliminate potential for
water or solvent to remain in crevices.
In fact, 32 micro-inch roughness average (Ra)
and 16 micro-inch Ra congurations were used
in the example feeder.
Lorensen and Ludwig point out that stainless
steel tri-clover-type clamps to secure the extension hopper and discharge nozzle as well as a
continuously welded housing and agitator arm
allow ease of dis-assembly. Fewer components
in the product contact zone also reduce cleaning
efforts.
Active pharmaceutical ingredients have different adhesive & cohesive properties and ow
behaviors. Variable feeder control, by means
of agitation, helps. Gravimetric feeder control
allows for continual helix speed adjustments
depending on the loss of weight over time.
Consistent helix lling is critical for good discharge behavior.

Application features
As in the food and dairy-feeding worlds, welds
on pharma-industry equipment must be continuous, non-porous and without cracks or under-

On-going mysteries
Its a common misconception that powder
behavior can be described by just understanding its owability, and that owability is a dis-

crete property that can be quantied by a single

number.
Despite comparable physical and chemical
properties, loosely-packed and tightly-packed
powders dont act the same. The same is true
regarding the inuence of aeration and consolidation. Freeman says its a matter of how much
stress is put on the material, with some being
more sensitive than others. Processing speed,
ambient moisture and time stored are other
important factors.
In fact, if nothing else, when it comes to
theory and practice in granular materials and
powders, simply saying there are many factors
involved is something of an understatement.
Freeman Technology is a UK-based maker of
systems for measuring powder ow properties,
including so-called rheometers, which use an
automated shear cell and several bulk-property
tests, including density, compressibility and permeability.
The name Schenck Process is synonymous
with more than 125 years of bulk material handling experience. It has grown to become one
of the global market leaders in applied measuring and process technology.

An organizations excellence
must drive its safe operations
Things to think about in an era when safety and security are paramount concerns
By Lisa C. Hutto

Integration dependent
An OES is a rst step that companies can take on a path to rst-class
process safety. Success depends largely on the systems integration into
the company. Integrations start at the base level of management and
supervisors, also known as the supporting base for process safety ele-

ments as well as employees. Day-today employee actions make or break

the system. Designing a system is
one thing, but success depends
upon interaction amongst employees and their adaptability to new
approaches.
When developing a companyspecic OES, it shouldnt be just
another manual. An OES describes
how the company will achieve
operational excellence. On the other
hand, some companies spend too
much time developing the OES and
not enough time implementing.
To be OES-successful, following
the initial focus on implementation,
its important to determine whats
working and what isnt and to make
changes accordingly. Implementation
includes developing accountability
that ensures compliance.
Some key components of a successful system include:
Responsibility taken at all levels, from operators to executives
Dened common goals in an
understandable context
Company and site expectations dened
Dened method for promoting continuous improvement
Ways to share successful practices and behaviors
A successful implementation
begins with carefully thought out

designs and principles that directly

relate to goals for successful process
safety. The best-designed systems
are, well dened, simple for ease
of application across the company,
and reinforced by the companys
accountability and performance
management systems.
Simple, yet elegant
Staying focused throughout the
process is essential. Dont make the
system too complex. Using the system is an everyday job for some, but
not others. Avoid making the system everything to all employees.
Everyone has a part in the system,
but it is too difcult and complex for
each employee to be responsible for
everything.
Grouping OES requirements into
elements and subgroups during
implementation helps efciency. The
OES should cover all areas without
overlap. Dene metrics for the systems performance including tools
that verify OES quality and conformance. Expectations must be clear
to prevent confusion or make it difcult to measure compliance within
a particular element.
Take the time to decide what the
primary focus is when implementing the new OES, including business
objectives. Decide what management tools are needed and allocate
for the planning and performance

When a company takes time to look at its overall process safety, and
realizes there is signicant room for improvement, it cannot simply
decide to get better. Due to the size and complexity of many companys operations, there has to be a more robust and systematic approach
to improving process safety.
Developing an operational excellence system (OES) is a well-dened
method for companies to improve process safety from within the organization. An OES more effectively manages process safety to meet the rising expectations of regulators, shareholders and communities.
More than 20 years ago, Exxon implemented the rst, and one of the
best known, OESs as a direct response to the catastrophic Valdez oil spill.
As time has progressed, Exxon Mobil Corp. has continually improved and
enhanced its OES. Due to that success, other oil and energy companies
followed suit and developed their own systems. Developing an OES veries that actions reect goals in process-safety efforts.
Operational excellence creates value through systematic and repeatable actions well-dened and addressable for everyone within the organization. It relies on properly documented standard processes that should
lead to continuous operational improvement. As part of it, everyone in
the organization will understand or will know how to nd out what tasks
to perform and what resources are needed.

Write In 142

Mixing & Blending

management needed to update and reinforce
the OES.
Organizational capabilities
Determine the companys ability to maintain
and develop processes. Ensure the following are
clear and dened:
how internal processes and systems are
measured for compliance
what site specic competencies are needed to maintain the OES
what employee skills and efforts are
required for achieving the organizations
process safety goals
As a company moves forward with building
safety and security into their processes, the project in its entirety can seem overwhelming. It is
essential that timelines are set up for each segment of the OES. Sometimes a company must
take a step back and reorganize before forward
progress resumes.

When developing the OES, consider focusing

on less complex elements rst. Starting with the
less complex elements allows a company time
to understand how to properly develop each
element, before proceeding to the more difcult ones. A fully functioning OES takes time
to develop. Set reasonable timelines and goals,
as it may take many months or years before the
full OES is implemented and its performance
measurable.
Final words
At rst, a company may not see the immediate
changes itd hoped for. The point is, do not stop
implementing and improving just because things
dont seem to be going fast enough. The OES
is a work in progress. Track the changes so that
credible metrics can be garnered.
Many companies are under extreme pressure
to improve their process-safety systems even
as they are impacted by stricter regulations, rising operational costs and stiffer competition.

Having an OES in place is something the market

demands. A well implemented OES can guide
companies towards the safe behavior that is
needed to reach company goals.

Mixing & Blending

Powder and Liquid Delivery System

Hapmans Solidquid powder and liquid delivery system

automatically and precisely delivers dry bulk ingredients
into a motive liquid stream to convey slurries, solutions or
suspensions into your mix tank, blender or other process
equipment. In addition to dramatically reducing mix times,
the Solidquid instantly creates non-viscous mixtures,
which provides downstream processing eficiencies, reduces
energy costs, creates less dust, and uses less loor space
when compared to other pre-mixing options. Material can
be discharged from a bulk bag unloader into a feeder,

which volumetrically or gravimetrically measures it in to a

solids eductor. The Solidquid also works with vacuum
conveyors or lexible screw conveyors so material can be
manually pulled into the system for processing minor ingredients. The Solidquid operation creates a high-velocity jet
that pulls dry material through the wetting cone.

Industry Briefs
Report explains likely cause of Horsehead
zinc reinery explosion
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) has
released a technical analysis of the July 2010
explosion and ire at the former Horsehead zinc
reinery in Monaca, Pennsylvania.
Two employees were killed in the incident
and a third was seriously injured and could not
return to work. The incident was investigated
by several agencies, but its underlying cause
remained unexplained.
A new analysis of all available evidence suggests that the explosion resulted from a buildup of superheated liquid zinc inside a ceramic
zinc distillation column, which then "explosively
decompressed" and ignited.
James Taylor and Corey Keller were killed
when the column violently ruptured inside the
facility's reinery building. This rupture released
a large amount of zinc vapor, which at high
temperatures combusts spontaneously in the
presence of air.
The report, prepared by William Hunter, an
internationally known zinc distillation expert,
concluded that Horsehead may have missed
several opportunities to avoid the accident,
overlooking symptoms of a blocked column
sump that were evident days before the
explosion.
"Missing these critical points indicates that,
in large measure, hazardous conditions at
Monaca had been 'normalized' and that process management had become desensitized
to what was going on. This raises the question
whether suficient technical support was provided to the plant on a regular basis," Hunter
said.
The Horsehead facility in Monaca is no longer

operating and the "New Jersey" zinc process,

a distillation-based method that was irst developed in the 1920s, is no longer used anywhere
in the United States. However, some overseas
companies, especially in China, continue to use
this process.
"Although this particular zinc technology
has ceased being used in the U.S., we felt it
was important to inally determine why this
tragedy occurred," explains CSB Chairman Dr.
Rafael Moure-Eraso. "Our hope is that this will
at last provide a measure of closure to family
members, as well as inform the safety efforts
of overseas companies using similar production
methods."
EPA approves new environmentally
friendly refrigerants
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has approved new climate-friendly
refrigerants, increasing the options for chemicals used in refrigeration and air conditioning
equipment in the United States.
The inal rule, announced mid-March, was
developed as part of the Signiicant New
Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program, which
evaluates substitutes for ozone-depleting
chemicals that are being phased out under the
stratospheric ozone protection provisions of
the Clean Air Act.
It includes:
Ethane in very low temperature refrigeration and in non-mechanical heat transfer;
Isobutane in retail food refrigeration (standalone commercial refrigerators and freezers)
and in vending machines;
Propane in household refrigerators, freezers, or combination refrigerators and freezers,

Write In 152

April 2015 www.ProcessingMagazine.com

in vending machines and in room air conditioning units;

The hydrocarbon blend R-441A in retail
food refrigeration, in vending machines and in
room air conditioning units; and
HFC-32 (diluoromethane) in room air conditioning units. According to the EPA, HFC-32
has one-third the global warming potential
(GWP) of conventional refrigerants currently
used in room air conditioning units.
This expands the list of SNAP-approved substitutes to include more low-GWP alternatives
that can replace both the ozone-depleting
substances and high-GWP hydroluorocarbons
(HFCs), the agency explains. The approved
substitutes have GWP values ranging from 3
to 675 and can replace older compounds with
GWPs of 1400 to 4000.
These refrigerants are already in use in many
of these applications in Europe and Asia, the
EPA pointed out.
The agency is also exempting all of these
substances, except HFC-32, from the Clean
Air Act refrigerant venting prohibition. This is
because current evidence suggests that their
venting, release or disposal does not pose a
threat to the environment.
Legislation boosts US pharmaceutical market
Healthcare legislation in the United States is
one of the key drivers of the country's pharmaceutical market, which is forecast to expand at
a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6
percent over the next few years.
Research and consulting irm GlobalData said
on Tuesday that it expects the U.S. pharmaceutical market to be worth $548.4 billion by 2020,
up from approximately $395.2 billion in 2014.

Write In 153

45
A new report from GlobalData
sets out several factors that will
drive this growth, including:
an aging population
increasing healthcare expenditure
the rising prevalence of chronic
lifestyle diseases such as diabetes
and obesity
universal and easy access to
reimbursement for pharmaceutical
product costs
the 2010 Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act (PPACA)
Joshua Owide, GlobalData's
director of Healthcare Industry
Dynamics, said that U.S. citizens and
the country's pharmaceutical industry have beneited signiicantly from
the PPACA and its amendment,
the Health Care and Education
Reconciliation Act.
He explained: "As the PPACA
mandates health insurance coverage
for all Americans, the U.S. has witnessed increasing use of prescription drugs among individuals who
are newly insured or have shifted to
insurance plans that offer premium
and cost-sharing subsidies. In 2014,
spending on prescription drugs
amounted to an estimated $275.9
billion, compared with $262.3 billion
in 2013.
"Around 20 provisions of the
healthcare legislation are expected
to have a direct or indirect impact
on the volume of drug and biologic
sales. As many as 32 million formerly uninsured citizens could enter
the patient pool, resulting in new
business worth $115 billion over a
period of 10 years."
Additionally, GlobalData said
that the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) oversees a
transparent, well-structured and
competent regulatory system that
facilitates the approval of pharmaceutical products and boosts market
growth.
Chemicals spill at Wisconsin
paper mill
Local residents in Menasha,
Wisconsin, were evacuated from
their homes after a March 16th
chemical leak and explosion at a
paper mill.
The blast at the SCA Tissue plant is
thought to have been caused when
an "organic polymer" leaked as it
was being unloaded, and then came
into contact with another chemical,
sodium hypochlorite a concentrated form of household bleach.

The two chemicals reacted, creating heat, giving off gases and
causing an explosion that blew off
part of a roof of the plant, FOX 11
reported.
Both substances are used in cleaning water from the paper-making
process.
"We did note there was a vapor
cloud that was emanating from the
building; also there was some liquid
on the ground, outside the building,
which also had some vapors coming
off of it," says Assistant Chief Mike
Sipin of the Neenah-Menasha Fire
Department.
Fire department oficials ordered
more than two dozen homes to
be evacuated as a precaution, but
residents were allowed to return
to their homes in the afternoon.
Hazardous-materials crews attended
the scene and the spill was contained before it could reach the
sewer system.

LNG year-round deliveries from

Yamal Peninsula to
Asia-Paciic contracted for
Yamal Trade, a subsidiary of
Russia's Yamal LNG, has signed
a contract with Fluxys LNG for
transshipment of up to 8 million tons of liqueied natural gas
(LNG) per year at the port of
Zeebrugge, Belgium.
The 20-year contract will support year-round LNG deliveries
from the Yamal Peninsula to AsiaPaciic markets, the two companies said on Friday.
During Arctic summer, Yamal
LNG will deliver its LNG to
markets in Asia-Paciic via the
Northern Sea Route using
ice class ARC7 LNG tankers.
Throughout the rest of the year,
the Arctic LNG tankers will tran-

sit via the Zeebrugge LNG terminal, where Fluxys LNG will provide services to transship LNG
onto conventional vessels which
will complete deliveries via the
Suez Canal.
"As the Yamal LNG Project
is progressing well, following the schedule, signature of
this agreement marks another
important step in the life of the
Project," comments Evgeniy
Kot, general director of Yamal
LNG. "A transshipment platform
in Northwest Europe is a key
element to our transportation
and logistics arrangement. A
contract with Fluxys LNG, an
experienced and reliable partner, will secure the LNG supply
chain for our buyers."

First gas lows into Australia

LNG plant
A new liqueied natural gas (LNG)
plant in Australia is one step closer
to completion this week after natural gas was introduced into the twotrain facility for the irst time.
Santos GLNG said that the gas
will ire the irst gas turbine generator to be used for high-voltage
power generation.
The plant is being constructed
on Queensland's Curtis Island. Rod
Duke, Santos vice president for
downstream GLNG, said that contractors had completed almost all of
the construction required for initial
production and that commissioning
of the LNG plant was "progressing
strongly."
Commissioning has been completed for plant subsystems including
emergency electric power generation, power distribution and switchboards, instrument air, nitrogen,
diesel supply, water systems, inlet
gas separation and iltration and the
main lare.
Last year Santos GLNG passed a
series of project milestones, including hydrotesting of the two LNG
storage tanks, completion of the
major gas ield processing facilities,
and drilling of 119 gas wells. The
company also completed its 420km
pipeline, installed the last of the
111 modules that make up its two
LNG processing trains, and built its
400-meter-long LNG loading jetty.

trofit:
verb - to install (new parts)
in something previously
manufactured or constructed
You talked. We listened. You wanted easier
sanitation of the gates and you wanted the
sanitation process to be quicker. You wanted
to just retrofit this new gate into your existing
Slipstick Horizontal Motion Conveyors. The
Triple/S Field Service Team had ideas about this
new gate and set out to build one for our Test
Lab. The new Eco-Gate is tool-less and opens
from the side of the conveyor. One major food
manufacturer retrofitted one Eco-Gate as a test
and liked it so much they installed 15 more!
Visit www.sssdynamics.com or call us today at
1-800-527-2116 and see how our retrofit can
save you time and money. It was your idea.
