Towing
CAUTION :

OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS WHEN YOU TOW OR MOVE THE AIRCRAFT ON THE
GROUND WITH THE ENGINE REMOVED AND THE FAN COWLS INTALLED:
THE THRUST REVERSER MUST BE REMOVED.
THE FAN COWLS MUST BE CLOSED AND LATCHED.
A PERSON MUST WALK BESIDE THE FAN COWLS TO PREVENT FAN COWL
SWINGING DURING AIRCRAFT MOVEMENT.
IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, DAMAGE TO THE NACELLE STRUCTURE
CAN OCCUR.

CAUTION :

DO NOT TOW OR MOVE THE AIRCRAFT ON THE GROUND IF THE ENGINE COWLS ARE
OPEN.
MOVEMENT OF THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE COWLS OPEN CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE
COWLS AND THE NACELLE STRUCTURE.

(1)

(2)

Towing
(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-02000-A - Towing - Hazard Area)
NOTE :

We recommend that you use a towbar that has a damping system.

NOTE :

For the requirements related to towbars and towbar tractors, refer to AC 5-8-0.

(a)

You can use the NLG towbar fitting to tow or push the aircraft:
. at maximum weight,
. with the engines between zero and idle.

(b)

Do not tow the aircraft if the dimension H is more than 300 mm (11.8110 in.). If you do, you can
cause damage to the cams that make the nose gear wheels go back to the center position.
(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-01900-A - Maximum Extension of the Nose-Gear Shock Absorber during
Towing)

(c)

All persons must be at a minimum distance of 3 m (9.84 ft.) from the wheels and the tractor
while the aircraft moves.
(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-02000-A - Towing - Hazard Area)

Speed Limits
(a)

(b)

Door closed and locked or removed:

1

For a tractor with a towbar, a maximum speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) is permitted.

For a tractor without towbar, a maximum speed of 32 km/h (19.8 mph) is permitted.

Passenger/crew doors fully open and locked and/or cargo doors open in vertical position:
1

(c)

In wind conditions, calculate the permitted towing speed before towing:

1

AES

The maximum speed permitted is 10 km/h (6.21 mph).

Measure the wind speed.

(3)

Do a check of aircraft stability (Ref. TASK 05-57-00-200-001-A) or (Ref. TASK

05-57-00-200-001-A).

Subtract the measured wind speed from the wind speed limit shown on the stability curve.
This gives the maximum permitted towing speed.

Approximate Towing Loads

(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-00100-A - Towing Forces)
(a)

When you push the aircraft rearward with the engines at idle, you must add the engine thrust
resistance to the towing loads.
NOTE :

(b)

(4)

Use these coefficients for the friction between the tires of the tow tractor and the ground to
calculate the minimum tractor weight:
. Dry concrete or asphalt: 0.80
. Wet asphalt: 0.75
. Wet concrete: 0.57
. Hard snow: 0.20
. Ice: 0.05

Limit Loads and Angles

(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-00200-A - Limit Towing Loads and Angles with towbar)
(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-02200-A - Limit Towing Loads and Angles without towbar)
(a)

In all the towing configurations, the safety pin locks the control lever on the interphone box in the
disengaged position.

(b)

The maximum permitted steering-angle on each side of the aircraft centerline is:
. +/- 95 degrees with towbar,
. +/- 85 degrees without towbar.

(c)

During towing, the towing angle must not be more than the angle shown on the FWD NLG doors.
NOTE :

(d)

AES

The engine thrust resistance at ground idle is 525 daN (for each engine in operation).

Step (c) is applicable for aircraft that have the wheel steering-angle marking on the FWD
NLG doors.

Use a towbar with:

. The towing shear pins, calibration 9425 daN (21188.2388 lbf) for the protection of the landing
gear against too high loads,
. The safety shear pin, calibration 826 m.daN (6091.45 lbf.ft) for the protection of the landing
gear against too high torsion.
NOTE :

When the engines are not installed, tow the aircraft smoothly.

NOTE :

It is permitted to tow the aircraft with the floor panels of the cabin and/or cargo
compartment(s) removed.

General Towing Conditions

(1)

Tractor and towbar

NOTE :

We recommend that you use a TOWBAR that has a damping system.

NOTE :

For the requirements related to TOWBAR and TRACTOR (TOWBAR TYPE) refer to AC
5-8-0.

(a)

(2)

(3)

All persons must be at a minimum distance of 3 m (9.84 ft.) from the nose wheels, the
TRACTOR (TOWBAR TYPE) and the TOWBAR while the aircraft moves.
(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-02000-A - Towing - Hazard Area)

Speed Limits
(a)

A maximum speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph) is permitted with all the doors closed and locked or
removed.

(b)

A maximum speed of 10 km/h (6.21 mph) is permitted with the passenger/crew doors fully open
and locked and/or the cargo doors open in vertical position.

(c)

In wind conditions, calculate the permitted towing speed before towing:

1

Measure the wind speed.

Do a check of aircraft stability (Ref. TASK 05-57-00-200-001-A).

Subtract the measured wind speed from the wind speed limit shown on the stability curve.
This gives the maximum permitted towing speed.

Approximate Towing Loads

(Ref. Fig. 09-10-00-991-00100-A - Towing Forces)
(a)

Use these coefficients for the friction between the tires of the TRACTOR (TOWBAR TYPE) and
the ground to calculate the TRACTOR (TOWBAR TYPE) weight:
. Dry concrete or asphalt : 0.80
. Wet asphalt : 0.75
. Wet concrete : 0.57
. Hard snow : 0.20
. Ice : 0.05
