We Dont Play Fair 150 Enduro Race

winner, Layton DeLissa, takes home $1,000
By ELLY GRIMM
Leader & Times
Friday evenings We Dont Play
Fair 150 Enduro Race saw several
cars zooming around the grandstands
at the Seward County Fairgrounds.
Out of all the cars who participated,
however, only one would be able to
take home the $1,000 top prize at the
evenings conclusion.
This years Enduro Race winner was
Layton DeLissa, who has been participating in the races for the past several
years. Rounding out the Top 4 were
Kyle Osborn, Kyle Nywick and Lance
DeLissa.
Its such a blast, because I didnt do
as well last year, DeLissa said. But I
guess I finally got the car set up, and
they got the track. The track was
watered down from when it rained,
and they put more water on it
beforehand, which really helped.
During the actual race, DeLissa
said the main thing going through his
mind was making sure to not make

any mistakes.
Theres a lot of laps to get through,
and if you dont finish, you dont
place, DeLissa said.
Overall, everything just came
together just right for DeLissa to be
able to take home the grand prize
money.
You learn something new every
time, talk to as many people as you
can, different drivers, and learn as
much as you can, and try to get everything set up right, DeLissa said. And
then theres all the prep work making
sure everything on the car is right.
Coming out and racing is just a blast.
DeLissa also expressed thanks to all
of his sponsors for the evening, plus
his family for their support. He also
said he would love to see more cars
entered in the race in the future.
Just get a car, find someone who
wants to help you build it, and just
come out here and have fun, DeLissa
said. I dont think any of us out here
are jerks, wed love to see more cars
out here. The more the merrier.

Congressional runner-up seeks

recount after 40-vote margin
By SEAN MURPHY
Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY A
retired university professor who
trailed his opponent by just 40
votes after Tuesdays Democratic
runoff election for an Oklahoma
congressional seat filed paperwork
on Friday seeking a manual recount
in the race.
Democrat Tom Guild filed a
petition for recount in his race
against former state Sen. Al
McAffrey, who led by 40 votes out
of more than 16,000 cast.
Guild paid $2,700 for a manual
recount of the ballots in Oklahoma
Seminole counties, where most of
the votes were cast. He says he
sought the recount at the urging of
his supporters, who helped raise
about $2,800 since Tuesday to pay
for the effort.

Mansell explains
joy of Dorothys
House and the
Land of Oz
Approximately 15,000
people from around the
world have visited Liberals
famous attraction
By JoAnne Mansell
Executive Director Coronado Museum,
Dorothys House and the Land of Oz

We are always excited to meet

new people from around the world.
And this summer is no exception. It
presents a good opportunity to see
and visit with new people. There
have been lifelong friendships and
relationships made over the years.
We see approximately 15,000
people from around the world at
Coronado Museum, Seward
County History exhibits, Dorothys
House and the Land of Oz.
What is exciting right now is
planning for our new museum
building which will enable to us to
share our history in a new dynamic
way, as well as provide a place for
traveling, historic and cultural
exhibits. This new building is
currently completing the design
phase. We will be introducing our
campaign to raise funds soon, and
we plan to be breaking ground this
year.
We would like to invite our
community to visit and participate
in our various exhibits and activities
at Dorothys House, Coronado
Museum and the Land of Oz.
We have rotating exhibits,
Dorothy is always available for tours
and various activities on the
grounds throughout the year. If you
have not experienced a tornado in
the Land of Oz, you need to come
and see it.
We always encourage our local
folks to bring visiting family and
friends during the summer and
share our attraction they will only
find in Liberal. Seward County
Historical Society in its three
entities has become one of the
finest attractions in the State of
Kansas. It brings people from
around the world which allows us to
recommend many local businesses,
hotels and restuarants, ultimately
returning the revenue back into our
local economy.

confidence or lack confidence in

the system, Guild said. I just dont
know, but I do know that my
supporters wanted me to do this,
and they supported it financially.
Guild, who already personally
loaned his campaign nearly
$24,000, said he didnt have the
additional $600 needed to pay for a
recount in Pottawatomie County,
where he defeated McAffrey with
58 percent of the 917 votes cast.
Oklahoma Election Board
Secretary Paul Ziriax said the
manual recount will begin next
week.
McAffrey said he already is
preparing for the general election
against first-term GOP U.S. Rep.
Steve Russell and that he is
confident his victory will be upheld.
With our equipment today and
the machines they use today, the
odds of them fouling up is almost
zero, McAffrey said.

Seward Countys Emergency Management Director

remembers first time seeing The Wizard of Oz
By ELLY GRIMM
Leader & Times

The Wizard of Oz film was

released in 1939, and it has been
capturing the imaginations of
the young and young at heart
(as the opening credits end) since
then.
Only a boy when he first saw it,
Greg Standard said he and his
family immediately loved it after
seeing it for the first time around
1966.
It was one of the first movies I
think wed seen that had color,
and we were just beyond
impressed with it, Standard said.
After the first viewing, it was
not just the technical aspects,

which included the flying

monkeys, that had caught his
imagination.
The storyline has an appeal to
it, a lot of people seem to identify
with some of those life lessons,
Standard. Its just a great story,
the acting was really good, it all
just really worked together. It has
an appeal for just about
everybody, and not all movies
reach that broad of a group.
Even though it was released in
a time when many grandparents
were children themselves,
Standard said he foresees the film
remaining a classic for generations to come.
I think young kids the first
time they watch it still find it

really interesting and are very

intrigued by it, Standard said. I
was there when my niece and
nephew saw it for the first time,
and there were a lot of reactions
throughout the movie they
were scared at some points,
excited at others. They were
certainly pulled in and they
watched it closely so they
wouldnt miss a thing.
While the number of people
who have not seen the film is very
rare, it remains a film nearly
everyone can relate to.
Its a great movie and if you
havent seen it, you ought to see it
somehow, Standard said.
