Open ETABS from desktop
Convert the unit to KN/m in the task bar
Click on new model from file menu
In the quick grid lines box ,change the
number of grid lines to:
X-direction = 6
Y- direction = 7
Spacing in x-direction =5.0
Spacing in y-direction =5.5
Story dimension
No of story=8
Story height=3.0
Bottom story height=2.0

To modify the grid

Insert the dimension of the column,
o Depth = 0.5
o Width = 0.4
Click on concrete reinforcement
Change the design type to column
Make sure that the design type is column
Insert 0.025 clear cover for confinement bars

Click on add new property (for grade beam)
Click on rectangular
Give section name (e.g. Gr beam) and insert
the dimensions of the grade beam
o Depth = 0.3
o Width = 0.25
Click on concrete reinforcement
Change the design type to Beam

o Click on add new section
o On the displayed box : make sure the
material is the one which you previously
defined (conc/C25) and give area section
name (e.g. slab)

8. Defining load pattern and load combinations
a. Load pattern
Define menu
Load pattern
Insert the load pattern name for each load type
Set the self weight multiplier as 0 for load
types other than Dead load

Write on load pattern name live
Change the type to LIVE
Click on add new load pattern
Repeat this for quakeX and quakeY
The auto lateral load pattern for earth
quake can be Ubc-97, an available code, user
coefficient or user load.
To insert information for an available code,
user coefficient or user load click on modify
lateral load pattern.
b. Load combination
Define menu
Load combination
Click on add new combo ( for the first combo.)
Make sure the load combination type is
linear(Add)
Give combination name (comb 1)
Load case name =Dead , scale factor =1.3

to select the maximum and minimum values from
the previous combo results:
Add all 13 combos with a scale factor of 1 for
each

9. Assign loads
a) Area loads
Each panel should be loaded the live load
based on CODE given, and the finishing load also
applied based on the type of the finishing. But in
this example we will apply similar load for each
panel.
Dead loads
Finishing loads ( floor finish, cement screed
and plastering) in this example take 8kN/m2
Live load, take 3kN/m2
Since the floor is typical ,we can assign load at
a time to all floor

Load from wall should be applied on each
beam based on the height and thickness of the
wall.
In this example apply 8kN/m load to the grade
beam and intermediate(SLAB) beams, 4 kN/m
(parapet) to the X- direction external top tie beams
and 15kN Dead load and 10 kN live load at points
on which the trusses will be placed.
Assume the trusses will be placed on X
direction beams at 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 (relative
distance) of each span.
