1. New model
Open ETABS from desktop
Convert the unit to KN/m in the task bar
Click on new model from file menu
In the quick grid lines box ,change the
number of grid lines to:
X-direction = 6
Y- direction = 7
Spacing in x-direction =5.0
Spacing in y-direction =5.5
Story dimension
No of story=8

Width = 0.25
Click on concrete reinforcement
Change the design type to Beam
Set the concrete cover 0.025 for both top and
bottom

Since we have finished defining of frame
sections click on OK
ii. Area section
o Define menu
o Section properties
o Area sections
o Make sure the section type is shell
o Click on add new section
o On the displayed box : make sure the
material is the one which you previously
defined (conc/C25) and give area section
name (e.g. slab)

Example:
Write on load pattern name live
Change the type to LIVE
Click on add new load pattern
Repeat this for quakeX and quakeY
The auto lateral load pattern for earth
quake can be Ubc-97, an available code, user
coefficient or user load.
To insert information for an available code,
user coefficient or user load click on modify
lateral load pattern.
b. Load combination
Define menu
Load combination
Click on add new combo ( for the first combo.)
Make sure the load combination type is
linear(Add)
Give combination name (comb 1)
Load case name =Dead , scale factor =1.3

Click on add
Load case name =Live, scale factor = 1.6
Click on add
Ok( finished for combination 1)
Click add new comb (for the 2nd combo.)
Load case name = comb1, scale factor = 0.75
Click on add
Load case name = Eqxp, scale factor = 1.0
Click on add
Ok
Repeat the process for the other combinations

9. Assign loads
a) Area loads
Each panel should be loaded the live load
based on CODE given, and the finishing load also
applied based on the type of the finishing. But in
this example we will apply similar load for each
panel.
Dead loads
Finishing loads ( floor finish, cement screed
and plastering) in this example take 8kN/m2
Live load, take 3kN/m2
Since the floor is typical ,we can assign load at
a time to all floor

Uniform shell
Change the load pattern name to Live
Insert a uniform load of 3
Ok
b) Frame loads
Load from wall should be applied on each
beam based on the height and thickness of the
wall.
In this example apply 8kN/m load to the grade
beam and intermediate(SLAB) beams, 4 kN/m
(parapet) to the X- direction external top tie beams
and 15kN Dead load and 10 kN live load at points
on which the trusses will be placed.
Assume the trusses will be placed on X
direction beams at 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 (relative
distance) of each span.
