This day established the beginning of a new world order, an
order that, if diplomacy fails, international security and stability will be in jeopardy. The foundation of the United Nations defined the way how all international conflicts should be tackled. During the cold war, this process was essential in the prevention of a major war between the United States and the Soviet Union. Through the United Nations Security Council, hefty tense issues like the Cuban Missile Crisis(1962) and the Korean War(1950) were widely discussed and substantial measures were taken in order to prevent the escalation of conflict and, ultimately, to promote peace in the region. Today, the United Nations remains in action, but the international context is completely different. Economic and political integration are now a reality. Countries in different continents depend on each other in the supply of goods and services. Now, economic issues have, in many cases, the priority in the countries foreign policies. However, threats to international security still exist. In 2001, the war on terror was declared and many actions were taken in its name. Despite all efforts made since then, terrorist still resists in dangerous groups like ISIS, Boko Haram, Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Therefore, diplomacy has the difficult but crucial- task to manage all the issues above listed as well as to maintain the stability and harmony in a complex integrated world. In a globalized world, where investors apply their capital in many parts of the globe, international law and trade treaties must be fully respected. In that way, diplomacy plays fundamental role in arranging free trade agreements as such NAFTA and TPP, as well as solving trade law violations through organizations like the World Trade Organization. Due to diplomatic efforts, the flow of capital, goods and services is safe. Because of that, investment can be expanded to developing countries, generating jobs and economic growth. Diplomacy also acts on solving geopolitical conflicts. The cold war is over, but some countries still join in territorial or political conflicts. Due to the advance of communication technologies, small actions taken by countries could be rapidly perceived by everyone. On containing those tensions, the United Nations plays paramount devoir by bringing all parties to the negotiation table. Thanks to this process, the recent issues of Somalia and Liberia could be successfully resolved. In conclusion, diplomacy is the engine that keeps the world working. Humanity has evolved technologically and scientifically, but that was only possible because of diplomatic actions that assured that war was unlikely and the scientific development could be fully employed on improving peoples life quality. Hence, the progress of society is directly attached to the success of diplomacy and keeping it as the main approach on foreign matters is the key for this stride.
