Annabell:

II amI standYou may have noticed theres a white person standing up here
in your pulpit in your church. Its amazing how white people just love to go to
black church at election time. Well, Reverend Jefferson took pity on me and let me
come before you today. Were in trouble. Theres an election on and I cant get a
single democrat in Dallas to care. If things dont change, Im going to die of
loneliness on November 5, or get trampled by all those white people rushing to
vote for Davy Crockett. I work for your candidate, a fine man named Walter Mapp.
And yes, thats why Im here. To convince you to vote for him and the democratic
ticket. How to explain this? My grandmother passed away last Sunday. She was
84, and lived a long, vigorous life. She was quite the character. Hated the Russians,
the Jews, the Chinese, the Catholics, the gays, white trash, and uppity women. And
boy, did she hate all of you. She didnt like me much either. But last week, as she
lay dying, she made one last demand. She insisted on voting absentee. Yes, my
grandmother voted for every right wing nut on the ticket, and yes, she fought all
the wrong battles, but she kept fighting until the day she died. Theres courage in
that and Im asking you to do the same. Besides, someone in this church has to
cancel out my grandmothers vote.
