1. Program Description :
South East Asia region is facing its rapid economy development. With many industrial and
commercial businesses make growth, it automatically increasing the energy use for
industrialization. According to International Energy Agency (IEA) report (2014), Southeast
Asias energy demand will continue to increase by 80 % from now to year 2035. With the
main energy supply is provided by fossil fuel combustion (coal,gas, petroleum etc), it is
raising concern about environmental pollution and global climate change considering the side
effect of fossil fuel burning.
Meanwhile, in contradiction with the large cities, there are many remote areas and villages in
South East Asia region which cannot be accessed by grid electricity. This condition raised the
demand of alternative energy as potential solution for improving access to energy and
promoting alternative energy in ways to disseminate economic development for rural areas.
However, due to lack of information and socializations, still few parts of society in cities or
villages are using the sustainable ways of energy generation. It is mostly caused by lack of
proper information and infrastructure access for renewable energy technologies to be
implemented in society. Based on this fact, active participation from all stakeholders and
society elements to disseminate
In this modern era, the youth have important role in moving the social issues. Youth are able
to carry strong messages and develop creative ways to deliver vivid messages about
importance of sustainable energy in their environment.
ASEAN Youth Energy Institute is an energy-related youth camp that will be participated by
youth students from all ASEAN countries. Our goals are to raise awareness of energy crisis
and needs to develop sustainable energy for community development among ASEAN youth
leaders, introduce the latest sustainable energy technologies and innovation as the tools to
solve the energy crisis in ASEAN and prepare a group of ASEAN youth energy leaders who
will serve as the role model and develop grass-root initiatives of sustainable energy
movement for their local communities. In Indonesia, the camp will be held for 4 days from
March 13-17, 2015. It will comprised of energy technology seminar, leadership development
and excursion.

Our program was initiated by U.S. Government sponsored international exchange program
alumnae, in YSEALI (Young South East Asian Leaders Initiative) program. Our project is
fully supported by United States Embassy in Indonesia and has been financially supported by
YSEALI Seeds for the Future grant from U.S. Department of State.
We bring top experts in Wind Energy, Microhydro Energy, Solar Energy, Energy Efficiency
and Leadership training as our distinguished speaker (on confirmation)
Goal:
This camp aimed to :
1.Raise awareness of energy crisis and needs to develop sustainable energy for community
development among ASEAN youth leaders
2.Introduce the latest sustainable energy technologies and innovation as the tools to solve the
energy crisis in ASEAN
3.Introduce social entrepreneurship concept as new model to catalyst sustainable energy
development
4.Prepare a group of ASEAN youth energy leaders who will serve as the role model and
develop grass-root initiatives of sustainable energy movement for their local communities
5.Set-up youth leaders networks and collaboration of youth leaders that will help promote
sustainable energy initiatives widely in ASEAN community
6.Prepare the participants as the energy educator for local community

Results :

The participants will expected to :


1. Be inspired and start making self-commitment to counter energy crisis by doing
sustainable energy and energy saving practices in their daily life
2. Know more about alternative energys latest technological innovation and able to generate
applicable technological ideas to support sustainable development
3. Understand and able to incorporate social entrepreneurship principle into their action for
sustainable energy development

4.Able to develop and lead a community development project in their local communities to
reduce the impact of energy crisis and introduce sustainable energy as the solution.
5. Share their stories and able to recruit more youth on their local community to make bigger
impact in nationwide and ASEAN region
6. Able to make innovative campaign (e.g energy game) to educate local communities about
sustainable energy

Benefits
The 30 youths (18-20 years old) from ASEAN countries will get hands-on knowledge and
skills about sustainable energy technology, leadership and entrepreneurship. The local
communities will gain alternative solutions that can be implemented to solve the local energy
crisis problems. The awareness of sustainable energy will be highly promoted by the young
social entrepreneur initiative.
2. Required Qualifications:
- An ASEAN (Indonesia,Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand,
Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Vietnam) citizen and have passport
- Active undergraduate student, age 18 - 23 years .
- Be proficient in English
- Have a strong interest in the energy and environment, proven by activities.
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their university and
community activities.
- Have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated by grades,
awards, and teacher recommendations.
- Demonstrate commitment to community and extracurricular university activities.
- Be willing and able to fully participate in the camp in Surabaya, Indonesia from
March 13-17 ,2015
- Willing to fund the travel cost (airfare) in advance.

The nearest international airport is in Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, Indonesia.


Pick-up facility will be provided. Expected arrival in Surabaya will be on March 13, 2015 (all
day) and departure on March 17,2015 (afternoon)
We provide each participant with a maximum of US$ 100 reimbursement for
airfare. We also provide full accommodation, meal (3x per day), airport transfer,
travel insurance and ground transport during the camp.
