Imaginary Support Method (ISM) In this method, the tip of the sheet pile must be embedded in stiff soil layer such as dense sand or stiff clay, in order to prevent the movement of the sheet pile. It is, therefore, assumed that the tip of the pile is not moved and behave like a cantilever support. Consideration of the step of excavation | Step Excavalivu + The in situ soil io asoumed to be excavated tn the level of about 0.5 m below the level of the first bracing, then, the bracing system is installed. In this step, sheet pile wall is considered to behave as a cantilever beam fixed at the first level of excavation. Shear force and bending moment at the level of the first brace are calculated as shown in Fig, 6.1. lateral earth bending moment pressure first brace Fig. 6.1 Computation for the first step of excavation (ISM) 2" Step Excavation : In this step, the excavation is assumed to continue after the first bracing system has been in place. It is again assumed that the in situ soil is excavated to the level of 0.5 meter below the level of second brace and then the second bracing system is placed. Shear force and bending moment are calculated on the assumption that the sheet pile wall is a simple beam supported at the level of the first brace and the other end of sheet pile wall (imaginary support). The external forces used in calculation is considered only those in the interval of the level of the first brace and the level of the second excavation. There is some moment transferring from the first step of excavation so we need an adjustment. Fig..6.2 shows schematically the shear and ‘moment distribution encountered in this step. There is an assumption applied at the imaginary support point (point O in the figure) that the point O will help in carrying about 40% of the computed maximum bending moment (Ms). Therefore, the resultant distribution of the bending moment must be adjusted to have the shape like that shown in the rightinost figure in Fig.6.2 MI first brace DRe second brace Mo- AMoV2 2Ro Mo Fig, 6.2 Computation for the second step of excavation (ISM) 3 Step Excavation : The procedure is exactly the same for any intermediate levels of excavation as shown in Fig.6.3. Note that the bending moment carrying by the imaginary point is always about 40% of the maximum bending moment. first brace second brace| 0.4Mo Fig. 6.3 Computation for the third to the last steps of excavation (ISM) 2. Equivalent Beam Method (EBM) In this method, it is assumed that each bracing system will be working as the support of for carrying the bending and shear forces. The computation is much simpler than the ISM, since each portion of the equivalent beam is used in computation as shown in Ist step 4th step Fig. 6.4 Computation for Equivalent Beam Method (EBM) 6 Example Design the section of sheet pile 2 1.00¢m Kos =L.6tni L750 GL-103 L170 oO Assume that each step of excavation is 0.3m below bracing, 1) Imaginary Support Method q=yh-2cVK,+qK, — (Find lateral earth pressure) First Step of Excavation ° Miso = (0.60)(1.30)(L30) + 1(1.85-0,60)(1,30)(1.30) 2 2 3 = 0.86 t-m Myo = (0.60)(1.00)(1,00) + 1(1.56-0.60)(1.00)(1.00) 2 2 3 046m Second Step of Excavatior YMg = 0 ; (1.56)(2.90)(2.90) + 1(4.34-1.56)(2.90)(2)(2.90) = 2Po(16) 2) 8 3 2Po = 0.90 ton EF =0; 2Pq= 7.66 ton Mas = (7.66)(1.45) - (1.56)(1.45)(1.45) - 1(2.95-1.56)(1.45)()(1-45) D2 3) = 8.98 tn Maso = (7.66)(2.90) - (1.58)(2.90)(2.90) ~ 1(4.34-1.56)(2.90)()(2.90) a) 3 11.76 t-m 4Mo 0.4(11.76) = -4.70 t-m (Mo = Mrs) Note : Some moment transfering from previous step Myas= 8.98 - (4,70+0.46) = 6.40 t-_m 2 Mago = 11.76 - (4.70+0.46) = 9.18 t-m 2 65 Third Step of Excavation YM, = 0 ; (4.06)(3.90)(3.90) + 1(7.80-4,06)(3.90)(2)(3.90) = sPo( 13.4) z 2 3 sPo=3.72 ton EF = 05 sPa= 19.41 ton Myo9s = (19.41)(1.95) - (4.06)(1.95)(1.95) - 1(5.93-4.06)(1.95)(1)(1.95) a 3 = 28.95 tan Mg .90 = (19.41)(3.90) - (4.06)(3.90)(3.90) - 1(7.80-4.06)(3.90)(1)(3.90) a} 3 = 35.34 tm Mr = -0.4Mp = -0.40(35.34) = -14.14 t-m Note : From third step, There is no moment transfering from previous step Fourth Step of Excavation SMa = 0 ; (7.51)(3.10)(3.10) + 1(10.49-7.51)(3.10)(2)(3.10) = sPo(9.50) 2 2 3 sPo= 4.80 ton DF = 0; 4Pa= 23.10 ton Miss = (23.10)(1.55) - (7.51)(1.55)(LS5) - 1(9.00-7.51)(1.55)(1)(1.55) 2 2 3 =26.19t-m Majo = (23.10)(3.10) - (7.51)(3.10)(3.10) 2 = 1(10.49-7.51)3.10)(1)3.10) Z 3 = 30.76 t-m Mg = -0.4Me = -0.4(30.76) = -12.30 t-m 67 Summary Summary 9.18 1414 FS.=12 Allowable Flexural Strength = 2.0 t/em* 3.6%100 = 2016 cm*/m 2.0/1.2 + Zreguized 2) Equivalent Beam Method -1.59 vm Triangle Moax = “E16 = -1.95 t-m/m 2. Excavation at depth 3 m. the results from 2 standard are little different but excavation at depth 6 m. ,the both results are so different . There are some reasons to support these results, 1) CIRIA Standard method concentrates on soil layers. When excavation is deeper ‘pending moment and earth pressure in soil increase. The penetration depth which is calculated from earth pressure and bending moment increase also. 2) Port & Harbor Association Standard method concentrate on capacity of sheet piles When excavation is deeper , properties of sheet pile is not changed because it can restrain bending moment . The penetration depth was constant . From above reasons Brace system is brought to support sheet pile in deep excavation in order to avoid driving sheet pile in a great length under the dredge line. Calculate the section of sheet pile at Hua-Lum-Pong area driven into clay layer, three meters depth in each layer, The undrained shear strength in each layer are as follow.
