DISCUSSION

The effect of fertilizer has resulted in a direct influence on stem elongation on bean
seeds. The final result of the study revealed that the group of seeds which have been
irrigated through an specific period of time, with the highest concentration of fertilizer, had
an observable better development in the elongation of stem than the other groups of seeds
with lower concentration of fertilizer, 2.5% and 5% respectively. However, according to the
statistical analysis that does not mean that there is a significant statistic difference on plant
growth, and even if there is a divergence in them, the effect that the fertilizer have in the
plants was detrimental.
The study took into account three different groups of seeds with different solution
concentration and the results reported that for 2.5% fertilizer concentration there was a
significant detrimental difference on plant growth compared with the growth of beans from
control group. T-student test showed that the differences between these groups were
significant. For samples from this group, the aqueous solution was not enough to produce a
positive difference in the development of the plant but a negative one. This effect could
have been seen because the growing medium inhibited the growth of the plants and did not
stimulate enough growth hormone production. Insufficient amounts of fertilizer can slow
plant growth or cause deficiency symptoms such as leaf chlorosis, death and stunting. The
lack of fertilizer proposes inadequate levels of mineral nutrients that plants need to make
essential compounds or to carry out general metabolism (Hershey, 2002)
Nevertheless, even though the statistical difference between plants from control
group and groups 2(5%) and 3 (7.5% concentration) were not significant, the observable
difference in stem height from plants of group 3(7%) can be owing to the 15-15-15 of N-P-

K composition of the fertilizer. The Nitrogen, according to Projar journalists, is used in the
process of photosynthesis owing to take part of the chlorophyll molecule. The highest
concentration of nitrogen, the highest concentration of chlorophyll. Thus more carbon,
hydrogen and oxygen are transformed in sugar to be used for the plant to grow (Projar,
n.d.). The phosphorus captures sunlight and transform it into vital components used in the
formation of the seeds and strengthen of the stem. The potassium helps the plant with a
better function of enzymes, and therefore more energy is available for plant growth. All of
these facts seems to have improved the development and the nourishment of the plant with
the correct use of the fertilizer (Projar, n.d.). The statistical difference is no significant
owing to the difference in the heights between control group and group 3 (7.5%) was very
small and that showed that the elongation of stems that did not have fertilizer could be
improved with the use of a correct concentration.
The study demonstrated that fertilizer influences stem growth and plant
development on different extents depending on the concentration used. Different solutions
result in different elongation measures, as a result of the effects of the nitrogen, phosphorus
and potassium added to the plant as fertilizer. In normal conditions, low amounts of
fertilizer can have an adverse effect on plant growth due to the lack of minerals plants need
to carry out their function.
