TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Its still months away, but parish ministers, especially if they are involved in the catechumenate, have their eyes on Lent and the Easter Triduum. Until fairly
recent times, the last few days before Easter were shaped by an awareness of the Passion, but the faithful were left to their own devices about how to engage with
these mysteries. A thousand years ago, the Easter Vigil as a solemn and central moment of initiation had vanished. By the early 1950s it was a minor moment in
parish life, celebrated on Holy Saturday morning, usually with only the priests and a handful of invited guests. Most people understood it as necessary only for
blessing the paschal candle and preparing the Easter water. People who were children during World War II sometimes remember that the weekly noontime test of
the air-raid sirens on Holy Saturday signaled the end of Lent.
Today, of course, we see Holy Saturday as entirely within the paschal fast, and hardly the time for children to be tearing through the plastic grass looking for jelly
beans and chocolate eggs. These memories point to a total collapse of the once-central liturgies of the Christian year. This impoverishment of the liturgy was mostly an
accident of history. The root cause was the loss of Lent as a time focused on the final formation of catechumens for the Easter sacraments. By 1880, scholars began to
piece together a vision of what once had been, and slowly, at first in a handful of monasteries in Europe, pieces of the tradition were rediscovered and celebrated.

ST. PETER THE APOSTLE

Latin America/Eastern Europe
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in
Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the
Church in the United States with the Church in Latin
America and the Caribbean. For people living in these
regions, barriers to practicing the faith include lack of
resources, shortages of pastoral agents, and poor
infrastructures that make relatively simple things like
participating in weekly Mass difficult. Your support of the
collection helps to share the faith with those who long to
experience Gods mercy within strong faith communities.
For example, in northern Peru, great distances and
deteriorated roads mean that church agents must often travel
by foot or mule to rural communities. As a result, some
communities are visited by pastoral agents and ministers
only once per month, others sometimes just twice per year.
The Collection for the Church in Latin America was able to
help fund training for 65 pastoral ministers for the
communities in this region. Because of your support, these
new leaders continue to reach out and serve the rural
communities, ensuring that all feel included in our family of
faith.
Our diocese takes up this collection the weekend of
January 28 and 29, 2017. Please be generous in this
collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with
families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support
will truly make a difference. In fact, in a letter to
Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and the entire Catholic
community in the United States, Pope Francis commended
the work of the collection, saying, Through your support,
many lives have been touched by the Good News of
Christs merciful love, especially for the poor.

A Call to Serve
"If you attend Saturday 5:00 P.M. Mass, Sunday Noon
Mass, or 5:00 P.M. Sunday Mass - we need your help and
your talents. Since you attend that Mass, we would love
to train you to be a Eucharistic Minister to serve your
Church, friends, and family. You do need to be a member
of the Parish. If you have a special situation you need to
address, Father Gem would be more than happy to speak
with you. Speaking for myself, I am not a saint but I
truly enjoy being part of the Mass and an E.M.
Sadly, if we do not get some help soon, we may be forced
to have only one E.M. at each Mass (instead of 3). Thank
you in advance and you and yours have a great
Thanksgiving.

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM

BY FR. GEM BANDIVAS, JCL, MBA, PhD

SECOND CONSECRATION WITHIN THE EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

Dear Father Gem: I recently attended
Mass held in a convention center, where there
was a large crowd in attendance. Soon after
Communion began, one of the concelebrating
priests, realizing that even after dividing the
small Hosts they were going to be more than 300
short, said, "I'll go make some more." Shortly
afterward I observed him at a side table saying
the prayers of consecration over a "new batch"
of hosts and chalice of wine. He later explained
to the congregation that it was all right to do just
the consecration since the Mass has not ended
yet. The priest obviously was referring to Canon
927 that states: It is forbidden to consecrate the
bread and wine outside the Eucharistic
celebration. My question is: Was the priest right
to do a second consecration within the Mass?
Did the faithful that received the "second batch
of consecrated hosts" receive Christ? M.K.,
Student of Canon Law, Manila
Dear M.K.: The fact that the priest you
mentioned consecrated both bread and wine at least
indicates that he was aware of Canon Law's
prohibition of ever consecrating the species
separately. No., even though the priest may have
done this in good faith, he was certainly in error
when he did the second consecration.
As Canon 927 stipulates: "It is absolutely
forbidden, even in extreme urgent necessity, to
consecrate one matter without the other or even
both outside the Eucharistic celebration."
The priest in question may have apparently
believed justly that by doing a second consecration
of bread and wine within the context of the Mass he
did not fall within the strictures of this prohibition.
However, what he did was, in effect, to
celebrate another Mass within Mass, as the
consecration of new species implies a new sacrifice.
By doing so, he therefore contravened the second
aspect of the canon by consecrating both species
outside the Eucharistic celebration even though he
was still celebrating another Mass.
This case is different from that foreseen in the

General Instruction of the

Roman Missal, No. 324, in
which for some reason the
wine was not properly consecrated:
"If the priest notices after the consecration or
as he receives Communion that not wine but only
water was poured into the chalice, he pours the
water into some container, then pours wine with
water into the chalice and consecrates it. He says
only the part of the institution narrative related to the
consecration of the chalice, without being obliged to
consecrate the bread again."
The same principle would be applied if, as has
happened, a parishioner informs a priest after Mass
that he forgot to consecrate the wine. This process
is necessary in order for the sacrifice, and hence the
Mass, to be complete.
With respect to the validity of the "second
batch" of hosts, I would say that they were valid for
Communion, and did contain the Lord's real
presence.
What should a priest do in similar cases of
emergency when hosts are lacking?
I think the best solution is to simply apologize
for what happened. Sometimes we priests have
recourse to extravagant "solutions" when all that is
needed is to recognize our fallibility and liability to
make mistakes.
This is especially so in situations, such as that
described, when the consequences of not being
able to receive Communion in this circumstance
does not imply a major spiritual damage to the
faithful and where an alternative solution may be
found at some other moment of the day.
In some cases, such as mission territories
when Mass and Communion are rare treasures, a
priest caught in this predicament would be justified
in offering to celebrate another Mass right after the
first one, lest anybody be deprived of Communion
for a long time.
Let me end by using the words from a
respected Canonist, But then again what do I
know?
Fr. Gem

LIBERATION AND REFORM

While you might have to reach for an atlas to
determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, todays
first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is
prophetic of Jesus future ministry in that province. The
light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately,
Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both
ignorance (darkness) and sin (the yoke).
As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an
attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good
people, of equating their own will with the common
good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done
in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members
of Christs party. The gospel is not to divide us.
Matthew quotes from Isaiah in todays Gospel,
presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiahs prophecies.
The theme is Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus
begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today:
Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

CALLING ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH!!!

St. Peters is beginning a Middle School Youth Group called MS ROUND UP on Sundays from 3:30pm-4:45pm. We will be serving light snacks, playing games, doing arts &
crafts, and all to engage you in building a relationship with Jesus Christ. The foundation of any good youth group is to help you understand the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, allow
you to meet Jesus as your best friend that you can always turn to in prayer, and to better understand why Mary Mother of God and Queen of Heaven is a mother to us all and we can turn to in
need. Please join us Jan. 8 in the Faith Formation Complex rm 13 for our first MS ROUND UP and parents are always welcome.
The HSYG will use an old form for its Life Nights. Through skits, talks, small groups, retreats, and conferences the high school students will engage in activities to help them understand
the Gospel is prevalent in our day just as it was 2000 years ago. The issues of peer pressure, bullying, abstinence, drug and alcohol use, teen suicide and fitting in with others is taking on a whole
new meaning in today's culture, but the one TRUE content is God loves us that He gave us life, and allowed His Son Jesus to be persecuted and killed to save us. The Holy Spirit helps to guide us
and through this youth group the high school students will learn ideas on how to guide them in their journey to adulthood. By setting boundaries and living with those boundaries they can stay
secure in themselves and even better help their friends and fellow man and woman. In this youth group high school students will be shown how to live Christ-like in a world that hates or dismisses
the truth of His existence. And through the Holy Spirit their prayers can and will be answered. We invite the high school teenagers to take a leap of faith so they can gain knowledge, love, and
mercy in their spiritual journey. Life Nights begin promptly at 6:30pm and end at 8pm in Faith Formation rm. 13. Snacks will be offered before the Life Night begins.
If there are any questions about the youth groups please call Anthony Sperduti, Youth & Young Adult Servant Coordinator at 702.354.5960. In the near future parents will be
invited to Parent Outings with Anthony to discuss the teachings in the youth groups and an open forum with questions will be offered.
Young Adults: Monday nights the young adults 18 and out of high school to 35 are invited to take part in the program that will deal with Social Justice issues, Issues of Concern for
young adults like dating, marriage, college lifestyles, and the Catholic doctrine. Here young adults will find out just how important they are to the church even though in the past young adults
have been discounted by other priorities. Well in the past these young people came back to church to get married, Baptize their children, and return to the faith. Well that is not happening
anymore and more and more young people are deciding God isn't real, God is false, or God was just a comic book hero. Lives and souls are at risk of eternal summation and the Catholic
church can no longer ignore these 18-35 year old people. In the Young Adult program that is yet to be named, young people will learn of the church's need for them in all ministries and
callings to the church. Young people will understand through this program that God the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are TRUTHS. Young people will be given examples on how to
live a Christ-like lifestyle at the workplace, in college, with family, and in the community. Young people are not the future of the church but they are the church. We pray that the young
people at St. Peter's church can hear the call of the Lord and respond. It will take you the parishioners to encourage the young people to live life for God and not themselves. Please join us in
praying for the young people and with your help and service the souls of the youth and young adults will understand how to truly love and show compassion for each other and God.
If you are looking to help out in any way with these worthy and beautiful groups please contact Anthony Sperduti, 702.354.5960 or email anthonysperduti@gmail.com.
