Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the well-known cold sore or fever bli

ster. Most people have come in contact with this virus during childhood and arou
nd 90% of all adults will have antibodies to HSV-1. The eruptions mostly appear
around the mouth. They can appear when one has a cold or flu or when one is unde
r a lot of stress. In fact they mostly appear when the body is run down and the
immune system is compromised. Although they are uncomfortable they are relativel
y harmless. It has been suggested that increasing the intake of Vitamin C and B
in the diet or in supplements may be helpful in keeping these under control. Str
ict hygiene is necessary to prevent the infection from spreading. The use of ess
ential oils can certainly be helpful in dealing with cold sores. In fact if you
use a little tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) or manuka (Leptospermum scoparium
) at the first indication (usually a tingling) you may be able to advert a break
out altogether.
Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) is genital herpes and is sexually transmitted
. Symptoms include genital ulcers or sores. It is thought that up to 30% of U.S.
adults have antibodies against HSV-2. Cross-infection of type 1 and 2 viruses m
ay occur from oral-genital contact. Essential oils that have been very effective
in the control of Herpes simplex include as mentioned above tea tree (Melaleuca
alternifolia), manuka (Leptospermum scoparium),as well as Melissa (Melissa offi
cinalis), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), palmaros
a (Cymbopogon martini), ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphoract. 1,8
cineole), Roman cha
momile (Chamaemelum nobile), German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) among others
.
