Mehlville board weighs

revamped pay schedule
By GLORIA LLOYD
Staff Reporter
Teachers left the Mehlville School District last year in droves, but
few are leaving this year and those who stay could be rewarded
with a new salary schedule that makes their salaries more competitive with surrounding districts.
Pending a vote from teachers, the Board of Education could approve a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, that includes a
new salary schedule as soon as today Thursday, May 26 when

Gateway Greening volunteer Cathy Viehman of Affton, left, helps build a new community garden at the Grants View Branch County Library. The Grants View garden, where all 28 beds
are reserved for the 2016 growing season, is the latest edition of the St. Louis County Librarys
popular community gardening program and the only one that will be open this year, since the
other gardens are at the currently closed Cliff Cave and Prairie Commons branches. To view

The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen might regulate videoconferencing, as some aldermen question how a fellow alderman has
voted by video at half the meetings in the last six months.
The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen was set to discuss an ordinance regulating video participation by its members at a work session Tuesday night after the Call went to press.

he told the Board of Directors.

Enrollment in Mehlville
up for summer school
By GLORIA LLOYD
Staff Reporter
In a revamp of traditional summer
school, the Mehlville School District is
doubling instructional time for students
this summer and adding busing and new
programs like STEM camps that could
potentially turn the program into a significant moneymaker for the district.
Registration is still open for the programs, and elementary summer school
enrollment has already doubled compared
to last year due to the changes this year.
Changes for elementary include expansion to a full day and options to ride the
bus from a students home school, said
Deputy Superintendent Brian Lane, who

Enrollment
Lane says Mehlvilles summer school
will be a cool experience for the kids
(Continued from Page 1A)

oversees the program.

Summer school is free for students, but Mehlville receives payments from the state based on average daily
attendance.
Its going to be a really cool experience for the kids,
Lane said of what the district is now calling a Summer
Acceleration Program because of a new emphasis on not
just the remedial work typically associated with summer
school, but advanced classes that drive student achievement.
Some years the district has even lost money on summer
school, but Lane told the Call he projects the district could
make $350,000 after expenses this year on the program,
mostly due to increased enrollment from more buses and
expansion to a full day.
We thought that was a real need in the community for
working parents, and to not have to try to figure out how
to pick up your kid at 11 or 12, Lane said. Its not just a
remediation program as it was in the past. The nice thing
is that not only can we offer these great new classes and
services, but because of the way the state is reimbursing
for summer school and with all our added hours and students, well probably come out ahead.
All summer school programs take place Monday through
Thursday, June 6 through June 30.
Trautwein Elementary, 5011 Ambs Road, and Wohlwend
Elementary, 5966 Telegraph Road, will hold Elementary
Summer School Acceleration, a full-day program of classroom instruction in English Language Arts, or ELA, math,
science and social studies, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. All K-5
students involved will also have enrichment opportunities
during the course of the summer program, and for the
first time, a prekindergarten option will be offered to help
students prepare for kindergarten.

Those programs will run in two

half-day sessions.
Y-Care will be available for a
fee, and will also be available each
Friday during the term that summer
school is not in session.
New this year for elementary, parents can drop off and pick children
up at their home elementary school
and the district will bus them to
Brian Lane
Trautwein or Wohlwend.
If youre in the Rogers (Elementary) attendance area,
just bring your kids to Rogers well bus them from
there, Superintendent Chris Gaines said.
Bernard Middle School, 1054 Forder Road, will host
Middle School Summer Acceleration from 8 a.m. to noon.
The middle school program focuses on core subjects and
enrichment activities for students in grades six through
eight.
The district is piloting extra buses for elementary school
this year, and if its successful extra buses for middle
school could be added next year, Lane said.
Besides the usual summer school, middle schoolers can
attend the first-ever STEM camp for grades five through
eight, which will concentrate on project-based learning in
math and science. STEM stands for science, technology,
engineering and math.
We think the STEM camp will bring in some kids who
wouldnt otherwise come my sons going, Gaines
said.
The two-week STEM camps meet for a half day with
teachers who took two days of training and wrote new curriculum just for the camps, the deputy superintendent said.
Its all fun activities based around science, technology
and math, Lane said.
High School Summer Acceleration happens at Oakville
High School, 5557 Milburn Road, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Although the high school classes include remedial cours-

es for students who need them, they also include a range

of electives, including business, art, sports and personal
finance, that students can take now to take more advanced
classes during the school year or open their schedule to be
able to take band or choir.
All classes will use 1:1 laptops, and online courses
will also be offered, Summer School Academy Principal
Rodney Gerdes said in a recruitment video for the program.
Incoming freshmen who were close but did not place
into Algebra 1 can take an algebra bridge to get back on
the algebra track, Gerdes said.
For the first time, the high school program will also offer
a free series of study sessions for students planning to take
the June 11 ACT test a program so popular that it is
already full, but it will be offered again next year. ACT
classes are typically expensive, but the district is offering
the service for free.
High school participants can catch a shuttle bus from
Mehlville High School to Oakville each day, Gerdes said.
Why have two months of lag in your education?
Gerdes said in the video. Get yourself ahead and stay
ahead ... Come be in class, learn and have fun.
Breakfast and lunch will be available for all students
except prekindergarten, who will only have breakfast.
Both meals function on the same accounts as students
use during a typical school year, with free and reduced
lunch or regular payment.
Besides summer school and STEM camps, the district
will also offer more traditional summer camps on the same
dates in sports, chess, drivers education, Mad Science and
Little Medical School, among other topics.
Most summer camps will be at Blades Elementary, 5140
Patterson Road, and sports camps will be at Mehlville and
Oakville high schools.

Police officer retiring after serving 43 years

By GLORIA LLOYD
Staff Reporter
The longest-serving employee in Sunset
Hills, Lt. Mike Swofford, is retiring June 1
after 43 years of service.
At the May 10 Board of Aldermen meeting, Police Department Chief William
LaGrand presented Swofford with a plaque
for his years of service and said it would be
hard to quantify the impact Swofford has
had on the city over the decades.
Its really difficult to take a 43-year
career and sum it up in two or three minutes, LaGrand said. But from the time
that I came here, Mike was always there to
lend guidance, support, good counsel. He
was always dependable and you knew that
when Mike made a suggestion, it was well
thought out and would be good for the city.
I just cannot overestimate the importance of that.

Videoconferencing
Ernst questions attendance
of Kostial through FaceTime
(Continued from Page 1A)

has attended four in person, four by video

and was absent from one due to a work
commitment in Wisconsin. He has attended the last two meetings in person, but said
he would be calling in Tuesday.
At the March 22 work session, aldermen unanimously voted for City Attorney
Robert E. Jones to draft an ordinance
regulating videoconferencing based on one
from Richmond Heights, including limits
of two meetings a year per alderman.
At a contentious meeting in February
under former Mayor Mark Furrer, aldermen voted 5-3 to allow Kostial to use the
iPhone app FaceTime to call in since Jones
ruled that FaceTime counts as a video
under state law a position rejected by
the dissenting aldermen, including board
President Richard Gau, Ward 1 Alderman
Dee Baebler and Mayor Pat Fribis, who
then represented Ward 4.
The Legislature overrode Gov. Jay Nixons 2013 veto of videoconferencing.
The new law allows every member of a
board to attend every meeting by video,
Nixon said.
The board barely had a quorum for the
work session, with Kostial, Baebler and
Ward 2 Alderman Tom Musich absent. In
a letter, Musich wrote that he had received
complaints about videoconferencing and
hoped the board could resolve the issue in a
professional and honorable manner without drama and grandstanding everything else will be an additional unwanted
public humiliation and disgrace.
Videoconferencing equipment for City
Hall could cost $10,000 to $15,000, Fribis
said. A phone could be hooked up to a
television screen with an HDMI cable
for a much lower cost, however, Ward 2
Alderman Steve Bersche noted.
One of the votes for FaceTime, thenWard 4 Alderman Donna Ernst, said she
would have voted differently if shed
known hospital consultant Kostial planned
to repeatedly use what she sees as an emergency attendance method. Ernst did not
seek re-election and was succeeded April
26 by Ward 4 Alderman Thompson Price
as Fribis was sworn in as mayor. Ernst was
also set to be up for discussion Tuesday as
one of the candidates for Fribis appointment of her replacement.
Although she opposed impeaching Furrer
last year, Ernst was so upset with Kostial
that she said impeachment for neglect of
duties should not be taken off the table.
Were setting another standard here of
a deadbeat alderman you dont have
to show up to the meetings, you could do
FaceTime, which is ridiculous, Ernst said.
And our other choice is to spend $10,000
or $15,000 on one alderman because he
took a job that he cannot fulfill. Thats not
fair to us, its not fair to the citizens the
citizens cannot hear him, they cant see
him.
At least one Missouri city, Marthasville,
outlawed videoconferencing because city
officials say they cant afford to buy video
equipment, but Jones does not believe that
is a valid interpretation of the law.
Fourth-class cities like Sunset Hills can-

Call Publishing, Thursday, May 26, 2016 - Page 5A

not prohibit what state law allows, Jones

said. Kostial interprets that to mean any
restriction on videoconferencing would
violate the law.
But from the outset, Jones has said video
participation can be limited or regulated,
just not outlawed, even though the state
statute is poorly written and likely violates the Hancock Amendment as an unFor more than 75 years
funded mandate.
Aldermen made it clear they are unhappy
with the quality of the FaceTime audio,

Call Publishing, Thursday, May 26, 2016 - Page 6A

By Mike Anthony

Meeting attendance comes

with holding elected office
Being elected to a public office carries with it many responsibilities.
Foremost among those responsibilities is attending meetings of the body
to which you were elected. By attending meetings, we mean an elected
official is expected to be physically
present at those meetings.
We also firmly believe that residents want their elected officials to be
physically present at board meetings.
In 2013, the Missouri Open Meetings and Records Act was amended
to allow roll-call votes to be cast by
elected officials attending a meeting
via videoconferencing.
In one of the rare instances that we
agree with Gov. Jay Nixon, he vetoed
the measure. However, the General
Assembly overrode Nixons veto.
While elected officials are permitted
to vote in meetings via videoconferencing, governmental bodies are
able to establish parameters for such
participation.
We believe an elected officials
participation at meetings through videoconferencing should be the rare
exception not the rule.
But for Sunset Hills Ward 3 Alderman Keith Kostial, attendance at
meetings via videoconferencing is
becoming the rule not the exception as his job frequently takes
him to Wisconsin.
As reported today by the Calls
Gloria Lloyd, Kostial has voted by
video at half the boards meetings in
the last six months.
Thats simply unacceptable.
We understand his need to make a
living, but he ran for alderman knowing full well the responsibilities the
office entailed.
The Sunset Hills Board of Aldermen
was set to discuss Tuesday night
after the Call went to press
whether to regulate members video
attendance at meetings.
Certainly emergencies will arise
from time to time necessitating a
member to attend via videconferencing, but we believe its reasonable to
impose limits on such participation.
Kostials election last year as alderman was not exactly an overwhelming mandate by voters, as he won by
three votes over Lori Scarlett. We
cant help but believe that if voters
would have been aware of his inability to attend the majority of meetings
in person that the outcome would
have been different.
As such, if Kostial cant guarantee his physical attendance at board
meetings on a regular basis, he should
consider resigning so someone can be
appointed who will represent his or
her constituents in person.

Wagner a great example of what is wrong with Washington, D.C.

To the editor:
Thanks to Brian Ettlings recent letter calling for U.S. Rep. Ann
Wagner to lead on climate change by supporting the Citizens
Climate Lobbys carbon fee and dividend proposal.
A quick review of Rep. Wagners voting record on energy and
oil reveals that she has signed the No Climate Tax Pledge by
Americans for Prosperity, which is a conservative political advocacy group funded by the Koch brothers.
The representative also has rejected cap-and-trade she signed
the Contract from America which supports the Tea Party movement and opposes regulating green house gas emissions.

Unfortunately, Rep. Wagner is a great example of what is wrong

with Washington, D.C.
She votes the way her political party, lobbyists and those who
contribute the most in the way of donations tell her to, in an effort
to elevate her status in the Republican Party. The only time the
constituents matter is when it gets close to election season.
People of Missouri, we can do better than this lets make
changes in November. And, oh by the way, she has stated on
numerous occasions she does not believe in climate change.

Pay
Schedule would add money
to starting pay, top salaries
(Continued from Page 1A)

it meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Administration

Building, 3120 Lemay Ferry Road.
Negotiations are confidential, but the
administration built its preview of next
years budget using a one-step increase to
salaries, which on the old salary schedule
is a 2.5-percent increase. If they happen
every year, steps roughly equate to a years
worth of service and increase the teachers
salary every year.
The salary schedules completely redone, but the cost of redoing the salary
schedule is about the same as giving a
step, Superintendent Chris Gaines said.
Theres still steps, but steps wont equate
to years for almost anybody.
Salaries were frozen last year as the number
of teachers who typically leave the district
tripled to nearly 60 after $4 million in budget
cuts that led to the passage of a 49-cent taxrate increase, Proposition R, last fall.
If approved, the new one-year MOU
would be the first significant change to the
districts salary schedule in a decade and
would add more money to the base starting
salary and more money at the top of the
schedule for veteran teachers, with a goal

Retiring

of attracting and retaining employees.

The idea comes out of the Salary
Schedule Committee that has been meeting on and off since it was mandated in the
MOU from two years ago. The committee
is made up of board President Samantha
Stormer, board member Larry Felton,
Wohlwend Principal Dave Meschke and
teachers Derek Norton and Ernie Perrica,
who is heading up negotiations this year.
After last years exodus of teachers, thenboard President Venki Palamand tried to
add money to the starting salary, but after
teachers objected, he pulled it from the agenda. The committee later produced a new
schedule that incorporated the basic idea of
increasing the starting salary to attract applicants, but also added money at the top of the
schedule to keep teachers from retiring.
When the committee met Oct. 7, member and Executive Director of Human
Resources Mark Catalana said compared
to districts like Lindbergh Schools, Fox,
Kirkwood and Rockwood, the new schedule would attract higher-quality talent by
raising the Mehlville starting salary from
$36,059, last in the region.
We would leap frog Fox and be second from the bottom, Catalana said. The
attraction piece would be taken care of, and
I think thats huge, I really think thats big.

Longest-serving employee in Sunset Hills

impossible to have a career as long and distinguished as Mikes

had without the support of his wife. The sacrifices that his family
have made are enormous, LaGrand said. I want to thank you for
that, Becky, very much.
As the two police officials posed for pictures taken by the person
who now becomes the longest-serving city employee, Lt. Greg

A month before voters approved Prop R

by historic margins Nov. 3, Stormer said
she overheard someone who did not know
she was on the board bashing Mehlville
after hearing about the budget cuts.
She goes, How can they not take care of
those kids? Stormer said. I cannot stand
constantly being known as the cheapest,
that drives me nuts. That is frightening
to me to hear those kinds of things from
people who have nothing to do with the
district ... The way they talk about us is
not the way we need to be known we
have too much talent, we have great kids,
you look at our academic programs, scholarships we need to show that we are a
place to come. And we are a place to stay.
In light of the record number of teacher
resignations last year, Palamand wanted
the board to consider adding to base salaries in an emergency move designed to
prevent further resignations, but Stormer
felt that was up to the committee.
I think its something weve got to get on
right away and send a message to the staff
that were doing what we can to shift money
around to try to retain staff, Palamand said.
Then-board member Lori Trakas noted
that the panel was formed not to add dollars
to the salary schedule but to shift existing
dollars around to better attract and retain.

Zveitel, LaGrand said, Michael, thanks for everything, all the time.
Accepting the plaque, Swofford told the Board of Aldermen,
Its been a pleasure working for the city all these years. Of
course, its been a few ups and downs along the way, but overall
its been a very good place to work, a very fine community and a
good group of people to work with over the years.
The city held a retirement celebration for Swofford May 11 at
the Community Center.
Mayor Pat Fribis also thanked both the Swoffords for their service and dedication to the city.

Teamsters representing Crestwood police

Crestwood officials are preparing for
negotiations with the citys Police Department, which is the first law enforcement
unit in the St. Louis area to unionize with
the Teamsters.
Just days after a vote by the Board of
Aldermen to keep the citys own police
force rather than outsource police services
to the county, Crestwood officers voted
overwhelmingly to be represented by
Teamsters Local 610 on April 29, according to a news release.
The foray into representing police departments was viewed by Teamsters national
leadership as a significant step by the
union, which represents 1.4 million public

employees in North America.

Many law enforcement officers throughout the Show Me state will see it is
time to seek strong Teamster representation to address their concerns, Teamsters
President Jim Hoffa stated in the release.
The dedicated men and women who put
their lives on the line every day will know
the Teamsters have their backs.
In the release, Crestwood Officer Dion
Olson stated, When I cast my vote, it was
an amazing feeling. I felt for the first time in
my 16 years of police work what it is like to
have a say in the future of my career. Im so
proud of my colleagues for taking the steps
necessary to better our working conditions.

Strong
Auditor says directors fees

(Continued from Page 1A)

In 2015, the districts total net position

total assets increased $499,119 to
$37,135,334 from $36,636,215 in 2014.
That amounts to a 1.36-percent increase,
according to the report.
The change in net position is primarily
due to the daily operations in the current
year, the report stated. Overall revenues
increased $795,195 from (the) prior year
and expenses decreased $409,323.
Of the total assets, $15,839,731 represents the districts investment in capital
assets, net of related debt; $2,354,000 is
restricted for dispatching; and the balance
of $18,941,603 will be used to meet the
districts ongoing obligations to citizens
and creditors, the report states.
At the May 11 meeting, Offerman outlined
Statement No. 68 from the Governmental
Accounting Standards Board, or GASB,
and its effect on the reporting of the districts defined-benefit pension plan, which
currently has 26 participants. No active
employees participate in that plan.
As a result of GASB Statement No. 68,
he said the districts 2014 financial statements were restated to include a nearly
$746,000 increase in the liability for the
defined-benefit pension plan.
The pension liability for the definedpension plan, even though its frozen,
theres a liability. In the past under GASB
Statement 25, that liability was just measured based on what the actuaries said you
had to put in versus what you funded. Now
the liability is an actual liability (and) has
been recorded on the systems of the districts financial statements ..., Offerman
said.
For 2015, the district reported current
and noncurrent liabilities totaling nearly
$10 million.
Of that $10 million, $5.3 million is from
the pension. So about 53 percent of your
liabilities is there from the defined-benefit
pension plan that has been frozen, he
said, adding that if the pension liability had
not been recorded, your liabilities really
would have went down by $1.2 million ...
Besides the pension liability, the district
reported a decrease of $308,278 in debt
due within one year and other long-term
debt for certificates of participation, or
COPs, issued in May 2000 and compensated absences.
A total of $3.61 million in COPs were

issued in 2000 to fund the expansion and

renovation of the districts No. 5 firehouse and administrative headquarters on
Mueller Road in Green Park.
In July 2005, the Board of Directors
voted to refund the COPs issued in 2000
with a savings of more than $240,000 in
interest payments. As of Dec. 31, the district owed $1,305,000 on the COPs.
The districts liability for accrued vacation totaled $1,015,785 at the end of 2015,
a decrease of $19,359.
The districts liability for accrued sick
leave totaled $736,710 at the end of 2014,
a reduction of $53,919.
In 2011, the district reduced its liability
for accrued sick leave by $1,487,347 to
$897,897 from $2,385,244. That liability
was reduced through attrition and a $1.1
million payout to employees.
The report highlighted several upgrades
in service during 2015, including:
2015 represented the second full year
after the district transitioned to a new
emergency dispatching center and recognized substantial technological upgrades
related to Advanced Vehicle Locator
AVL and Mobile Data Terminal
MDT. AVL service utilizes globalpositioning-system technology and allows
the closest available unit to be dispatched
based upon location, versus using a system
of designated areas of response. MDT service provides electronically transmitted,
real-time patient-information updates to
the crews while responding to the call.
The district continues to purchase a
new ambulance each year and provides
the largest ambulance service of all fire
districts in St. Louis County. 2015 represented the third full year of the districts
modified-staffing model to provide a sixth
ambulance in service, improving response
times for emergency medical services.
The districts child safety seat program
implemented in 2006 has installed over
1,800 safety seats at no cost to residents.
The districts blended tax rate of 70
cents per $100 of assessed valuation was
the lowest of all county fire districts for the
10th consecutive year.
During 2015, board Chairman Aaron
Hilmer was paid $1,725, board Treasurer
Bonnie Stegman was paid $1,829 and
board Secretary Ed Ryan was paid $1,759
a total of $5,313.
Actually, this district probably has the
lowest directors fees of most all the districts in St. Louis County ..., Offerman
said.

Six Lindbergh High School seniors

sign to play college sports this fall
Six Lindbergh High School student-athletes recently committed to college teams
and will advance their careers in soccer,
wrestling, track, swimming, basketball and
volleyball.
LHS Athletics Director Scott Luczak
congratulated the seniors, who will represent Lindberghs high standards of play at
colleges and universities across Missouri
and Illinois.
Here is what Lindbergh coaches had to
say about their athletes headed to college
teams next year:
Matthew Dreon, son of Peter and Mary
Dreon, has played soccer for 11 years.
As a Flyer, he played center midfield
and served as team captain during both
his freshman and senior years. Matthews
career highlight was scoring the gamewinning goal this year in the final seconds
of play against Parkway South. Matthew
has been on the honor roll all four years of
high school, and is a member of National
Honor Society, French Honor Society and
Future Business Leaders of America.
Matt has been an outstanding member of the varsity boys soccer team for
the past two years, coach Mark Giesing
stated in a news release. His consistent
hard work and positive attitude earned
him a captains position on the team during his senior year. He was the starting
central midfielder for the varsity team, and
from this position directed the Lindbergh
offense and was critical to the teams success this year.
Matthew will play soccer for coach Tim
Mosby at St. Louis Community CollegeMeramec, where he plans to major in
environmental engineering.
Dylan Jones, son of Dusty and Brooke
Jones, has been wrestling for 14 years.
During his high school career, he won the
Flyer Classic Tournament. Dylan serves
on Leadership Committee and has maintained a 3.0 grade-point average, or GPA,
in addition to wrestling.
Dylan Jones was a leader on the football and wrestling team at Lindbergh High
School, wrestling coach Ben Smith stated. He has been one of the best wrestlers
in the state of Missouri and a pillar in
the community. Dylan has stayed very
involved with the Lindbergh community
by volunteering as a middle school football coach, as well as a youth league
wrestling coach. Good luck at Millikin
University, Dylan.
Dylan will attend Millikin University in
Decatur, Ill., and plans to major in mathematics education. Dylan will wrestle for
coaches Ryan Birt and Erik Hanson.
Malik Johnson, son of Renita and Harold
Johnson, has had an exciting career as
a Flyer, placing fifth in state in the 100meter dash, and twice being named AllState in track and field. In addition, Malik
was twice named All Conference football
as cornerback, and in 2015 he was the
Flyers football most valuable player.
Malik has been a four-year letter winner and a three-time state qualifier, coach
James Petersen stated. He has been a
tremendous asset to the Lindbergh boys
track and field program throughout his
entire career.

Malik will run track for Northwest Missouri State University and plans to major
in sports marketing.
Austin Mayer, son of Keith and Leslie
Mayer, has been swimming for 12 years.
As a Flyer, he holds school records in the
500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 200 IM and
100 freestyle. He has been named All State
in swimming for four years.
Outside of swimming, Austin is a member of National Honor Society, French
Honor Society, Strolling Strings and Symphonic Orchestra, and has a 4.2 GPA.
He will swim at Truman State University
for coach Ed Pretre.
Austin is probably the best all-around
swimmer I have had the opportunity to
coach here at Lindbergh, coach Timothy
Lombardo stated. Austin is an awesome
young man. Truman State got a great one.
Greg Lahm, son of Mike and Malinda
Lahm, has played forward for the varsity
basketball Flyers for three of his four years
at LHS. He started his career playing for
the junior varsity team in ninth grade.
Lahm says his most memorable moment
as a Flyer was joining the 1,000-careerpoint club during a matchup against his
dads alma mater, Mehlville High School.
Greg has set the standard here at
Lindbergh of what a student-athlete should
be, coach Jason Wolfard stated. He has
improved every year of his high school
career and ranks among the top players to
ever play basketball at LHS. He is going
to be a tremendous asset at Missouri S&T
next year with their basketball team, and
he will continue to achieve great things in
his future.
Off the court, Lahm is a four-year Renaissance platinum award winner, a member
of National Honor Society and a district
DECA champion.
He will play basketball for coach Jim
Glash next year for Missouri University of
Science and Technology, where he plans
to major in engineering.
Elizabeth Perley, daughter of Brad and
Janet Perley, has been playing volleyball
for nine years, most recently in the position of middle/right side for the Flyers.
She played on the varsity team for three
years, and led the team in blocks her senior
year. Lizzies favorite memory as a Flyer
is scoring the winning point on Senior
Night and playing alongside her five senior
teammates, who have grown up together in
the sport.
She is a four-time Renaissance award
recipient, and a member of DECA, Future
Business Leaders of America, National
Honor Society, National English Honor
Society and Spanish Honor Society.
Lizzie is a hard worker who does whatever is required of her to make the team
around her better, coach Rob Langevin
stated. She played many positions until
finding a spot in the middle. She is an
aggressive, active player who always finds
a way to get into the offensive mix.
Perley will play volleyball at Maryville
University for coach Ashlee Brockenbrough. She plans to major in sports business management.

Lindbergh High School English teacher

Katie Arens recently was named Lindbergh
Schools 2016 Teacher of the Year during
a surprise ceremony at her school.
At Lindbergh High School, Arens has
introduced innovative teaching strategies
to help the entire school embrace 21st century learning, while simultaneously developing a student advisory program dedicated to academics and character development, according to a news release.
Most recently, she wrote first-of-its-kind
curriculum for a brand-new English class
that incorporates 21st-century skills and
Project Based Learning. Her fellow teachers say English PBL is arguably the most
challenging curriculum in the LHS English
Department, and that Arens is constantly
revamping, redesigning and reorganizing
her lessons as the course develops to
ensure that students learn critical skills.
She is a collaborative partner who works
well with students and coworkers, and is
not afraid to gather feedback, self-reflect
and make her lessons better.
Project Based Learning is an emerging
trend in education that allows students
to focus in-depth on a topic that interests
them, developing critical thinking, problem solving skills, and various forms of
reading and writing skills through a variety of speaking and listening activities. It
emphasizes student choice in the learning
process: choice in assignment type; choice
in assessment type; and most importantly,

choice in the revision process.

Ms. Arens is a teacher who inspires
students of all backgrounds and abilities
to learn, Principal Eric Cochran stated
in the release. She represents all of the
phenomenal teachers at LHS, and will do
a great job as she advances to Missouris
regional level competition. She has earned
the respect of students, parents, and colleagues, and we are proud that she has
been selected to represent Lindbergh
teachers districtwide.
Arens developed and implemented the
high schools PAC Advisory Council, a
program that connects teachers and students to help students plan for their academic future while focusing on character
development. In this role, she has helped
execute four schoolwide service learning
projects for more than 2,000 students,
creating meaningful and engaging learning
experiences.
I really could not be here without all of
you, Arens told the LHS faculty during
the surprise announcement. I appreciate
your help so much, and all of your support.
Arens is a member of the LHS Character
Council, a student teaching mentor teacher, and a leader in professional development for her colleagues.
She has been an English teacher at LHS
since 2011 and earned her bachelor of science degree in secondary education at the
University of Missouri-Columbia.

Mehlville goes paperless with Peachjar tool

The Mehlville School District has
launched a new electronic flier communication tool called Peachjar.
District officials believe that employees
and residents will appreciate the time
and financial benefits that come with the
Peachjar system.
This green initiative will save the district tons of paper and reduce copy costs by
thousands of dollars. On top of that, posting school fliers in this electronic backpack
will eliminate the time that teachers, office
staff and volunteers spend every week
stuffing papers into student backpacks.
The Peachjar system will be used exclusively for distribution of school-approved
materials, including the monthly lunch
menus and event fliers. The cost is free
for any materials that are generated by
the schools, for all PTO materials and for

anything that is a fundraiser for a school or

the entire district. Outside organizations,
like summer sports camps and nonschool
activities, will have to pay a small fee to
post their fliers on Peachjar.
The Peachjar system went online Monday.
To request flier approval, follow the steps
below. Once approved, the flier will be
emailed to all parents and posted online.
Visit www.peachjar.com.
Register as an Enrichment/Community
Org. account type.
Upload your flier for approval.
Your flier will be automatically submitted to the Communications Department
and the materials will be reviewed. Some
fliers might be rejected due to content. The
submitter will be notified and advised on
what changes should be made.

1312. PRAYERS

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(never known to fail) O, most
beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel,
fruitful vine, splendor of heaven,
blessed Mother of the Son of
God, Immaculate virgin, assist
me in my necessity. Oh, Star
of the Sea, help me and show
me herein you are my mother.
Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Queen of Heaven and Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the
bottom of my heart to succor
me in this necessity. There are
none that can withstand your
power. Oh, show me herein
you are my mother. Oh, Mary,
conceived without sin, pray for
us who have recourse to thee.
(3X) Holy Spirit, you who solve
all problems, light all roads so
I can attain my goal. You who
gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against
me and that in all instances in
my life you are with me, I want
in this short prayer to thank you
for all things as you confirm
once again that I never want
to be separated from you in
eternal glory. Thank you for
your mercy toward me and
mine. (Must say this prayer 3
consecutive days.) After 3 days,
the request will be granted. This
prayer must be published after
the favor is granted! Thank you!
