BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION


This course is an introduction to the process of managing an existing or newly
createdsmall business venture, providing the required knowledge and tools to
eitherhelp the start-up -- or the purchase -- and management of a new or an
ongoingsmall business, with the greatest chance for success. It ultimately aims
to equip students with the foundations and tools needed for entrepreneurial
success in managing and/or owning a small business.
The course provides students with an overview of the everincreasing
importance of small businesses in the worlds economy and its highly
competitive environment, showing how to build a strategic business plan to be
able to participate and remain (survive) successfully. It discusses the various
forms of business ownerships and what is needed to make a smart buying
process of an existing small business. The content of the course then embarks
in describing the importance of the marketing function for any type of business
organization, including -- and especially -- for small businesses. It thoroughly
discusses several topics, among others: pricing, cash flow and overall financial
planning, franchising, strategic business planning, market planning, etc. In
short, the course helps students understand and review the main
characteristics of the small business world, within a very competitive (local,
national and global) environment. The course also has laboratory sessions
(7.5 hours) leading to being able to design, develop and present a Business
Plan for a Small Business Venture.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Determine if entrepreneurship is an appropriate career choice.
2. Conduct a feasibility analysis to determine the viability of a business
concept and construct a business model.

3. Describe the impact of internal and external environmental factors on


management decision-making.
4. Conduct research and synthesize market and industry research to
identify new business opportunities.
5. Evaluate products or services viability.
6. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the typical sources of
financing.
7. Prepare and analyze a cash flow statement to identify problems and
timing of cash infusion.
8. Design an ideal team of founders, advisors, and human resources.
9. Explain typical government regulations impacting a new business.
10. Contrast the legal forms of business ownership.
11. Identify basic protections for intellectual property.
12. Demonstrate team leadership and show acceptable teamwork.
13. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
14. Understand and defend ethical positions related to business ownership.
15. Practice creativity techniques to identify new ventures.
16. Incorporate diversity decisions into human resources and marketing
planning.
17. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of franchising.
18. Understand the need for change and manage change effectively.
19. Practice networking and experience the importance of developing
business relationships.
20. Prepare for future courses necessary to complete the Bachelor of
Science in Business Administration.
21. Develop and present a Business Plan (by Groups) for a Small Business
Venture (Laboratory Sessions, 7.5 Hours in total)

BUS 101 (Introduction to Business)
COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS
Students should be familiar with the use of Microsoft Office programs. They
should have an e-mail account and know how to attach and download files
from their e-mail.
OUT-OF-CLASS LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Completion of out of class assignments or homework assignments is
mandatory in order to meet the learning objectives of this course. The student
is expected to successfully complete the assigned out of class work following
the guidance provided by the faculty member teaching the course. Students

are expected to spend approximately six (6) hours a week (2 hours of


reading, studying and homework assignments per each weekly class

Read assigned textbooks chapters before the date they are presented in
class. Make notes of the presentations in class. Bring your questions or
comments to class.
Assignments
All assignments must be completed and turned in by due dates. No
assignments will be accepted after due dates, unless there are sufficient and
evident attenuating circumstances accepted by the Professor. .
Extra Credit
This may be earned by proposal by student of acceptable work to be
performed by the student or by additional assignments and/or study sessions,
as proposed by the faculty member teaching the course.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS COURSE


Participation
Attendance and participation in class are both required. The success of this
class depends on the interaction with your peers and the instructor. Ask
questions. Participation is not just answering what the instructor asks.
Bring in related materials or examples to share with your classmates.
Preparation
Careful preparation and extensive study is necessary. Please plan your
schedule accordingly.

Review the textbook Learning Goals section at the beginning of the


assigned chapter so you begin to develop a mental framework for what you
will learn in the chapter.
Read the reading assignments as listed in the table.
Try to answer the Review Exercises questions at the end of each chapter
to determine if you understand the information presented. Complete in
writing only those questions listed in this study guide. It is suggested that
all questions at the end of each chapter be answered for a thorough
understanding.
Review the Summary of Learning Goals at the end of each chapter to see if
you understand the concepts. Look over the rest of the end of chapter
activities to see if you can explain the terms the book uses and answer the
questions.
Check the optional resources section of each lesson in the text. Some
chapters include a Web based practice test, supplemental Web sites,
and/or a video for content enrichment.
Students are expected to complete homework as assigned in order to
achieve the learning objectives for this course.

Attendance
Attendance and participation are important to your success in this class. No
matter what the reason for your absence is, you are fully responsible for the
information presented and for any work that was due. You will need permission
from your instructor in order to make up any in-class assignments. Work is due
at the beginning of each class period. Make arrangements for someone to
deliver your homework, or email it to the instructor if you are absent. If you
miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor for makeup work
required. This work must be completed quickly so that all assignments can be
graded together and returned to you in a timely manner.
NOTE: If you must miss class, notify the instructor (email or phone) at least two
or three hours before class starts, unless proven circumstances occur.

Class attendance is absolutely mandatory.


Four (4) late arrivals (tardiness) to classes is equivalent to one (1)
ABSENCE. There is a maximum of FOUR (4) permissible unjustified
absences. Any student that has four (4) or more absences automatically
fails (F) the course.
EXCUSED/JUSTIFIED ABSENCES MUST BE NOTIFIED AND REQUESTED
TO THE INSTRUCTOR AT LEAST TWO (2) HOURS BEFORE CLASS
STARTS, UNLESS THERE ARE SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE OF VERY
SOLID AND PROVEN ATTENUETING/EMERGENCY CIRCUMSTANCES,
SUCH AS A DOCTORs ORDER OR SUDDEN SICKNESS/ACCIDENTS.
Deadlines
Work is due at the beginning of class on the due date, whether you are in
attendance or not. This means it should be already printed out when you arrive
for class. Your work will not be accepted if you delay class by trying to print
when you get to class. Late work is not accepted without prior approval from
the faculty member.
Academic Misconduct
The guidelines in MAUs Student Code of Conduct and Responsibility will be
upheld in this course. According to the Student Code of Conduct and
Responsibility:
Academic misconduct includes: (a) cheating (using
unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any
academic exercise, plagiarism, falsification of records,
unauthorized possession of examinations, intimidation,
any and all other actions that may improperly affect the
evaluation of a student's academic performance or
achievement); (b) assisting others in any such act; or (c)
attempts to engage in such act.
Unless otherwise indicated (as in a group project), all work must be your own.
Plagiarism includes representing anothers work as your own or recycling
earlier work as new work without consulting the instructor. Digital technologies
make it possible to cut and paste workremember that if you dont cite it, it is
plagiarism and you are plagiarizing! Remember to use proper source citations
in citing the evidence, ideas and quotations you use in your own work. All
quizzes and other assessments must be completed on your own, with no
outside help. Academic dishonesty also includes providing false or misleading
information in order to receive a postponement or an extension on a quiz, test
or any other assignment. Students who do not comply with the policies will be
penalized, in accordance with severity of the offense, with a reprimand,
suspension, failing grade in the course, or expulsion from the University.

METHOD OF COURSE DELIVERY
The subject matter in this course will be presented in a lecture & discussion
format, using case analysis, homework assignments, Internet activities, writing
assignments, videos, exams, quizzes, and teamwork. Students are expected
to read/study the chapters and complete the assigned homework before
coming to class. This will provide for a two-way exchange of ideas and
discussions of the subject matter. It is imperative that all students make a
concerted effort to attend every class session to ensure that they will obtain
the full benefit of the course and obtain the optimal passing grade from the
course.
