Aswellasregularcyclestherearerandomfluctuationsinthings,too.Therandomoccurrencescan
camouflagetheregularcyclesandalsogeneratewhatappeartobenew,smallercycles,whichtheymaynot
be.Ifyouarezealousenoughyoucanfindregularityinalmostanything,includingrandomnumberswhere
youknowthattheregularityhasnosignificanceandknowitwillnotcontinue.Thisistheproblemwith
markettimingsignals.
Also,manythingsactasiftheyareinfluencedsimultaneouslybyseveraldifferentrhythmicforces,the
compositeeffectofwhichisnotregularatall.
Thecyclesmayhavebeenpresentinthefiguresyouhavebeenstudyingmerelybychance.Theupsand
downsyouhavenoticedwhichcomeatmoreorlessregulartimeintervalsmayhavejusthappenedtocome
thatway.Theregularitythecycleisthereallright,butinsuchcircumstancesithasnosignificance.
Thefollowingexamplesillustratethisproblemofcyclesappearing/disappearing.
CyclesintheStockMarket
Whenforecastingstockmarketcycles,thecyclesareinfluencedbyrandomevents.Cyclesareinherently
unreliableandtheirpredictivevalueprovidesonlyspecificprobabilitieswhenthesuggestedtimeperiodis
approached.
Fixedtimecyclesareapparentinstockmarkettopsandbottoms.Buteventuallyacyclewillceaseto
continue.Forexample,thefouryearcycleintheUSstockmarketheldtruefrom1954to1982producing
accurateforecastsof8marketbottoms.Hadaninvestorrecognizedthecyclein1962,hecouldhave
amassedafortuneoverthenext20years.Butin1986,thecyclespredictionofalowfailedtoprovidea
bearmarketandin1987itsrisingportionfailedtopreventthelargestcrashsince1929.
Anothercyclethatmayhavedisappearedisthe3yearcyclethatbeganin1975,forecastinglowsin1978,

1981,1984,1987and1990therewasnosignificantbottomin1993,1996or1999.
Otherlongtermcycles(suchasKondratieffandBenner/Fibonacci)aswellasElliottWavecounts,
suggestthattheultralongtermbullmarketmaybecomingtoanend.
Therefore,manyoldorexistingcyclesmaycometoanendandnewonesbegin.
Itisdifficultatthebestoftimestorecognizeacycletakingplace,butwiththehighprobabilityofa
reversalinultralongtermtrendatthetimeofwriting(March2002)itisevenhardertoconfirm.
Nevertheless,thetextbelowexplainshowalotofcycleshavebeenseenonthelongtermUSstock
market.
