Hymn of Praise
VERSE 1

For the healing of the nations,

Lord, we pray with one accord,
For a just and equal sharing
Of the things that earth affords.
To a life of love and action
Help us rise and pledge our word.
Help us rise and pledge our word.

VERSE 2

Lead us forward into freedom,

From despair Your world release,
That, redeemed from war and hatred,
All may come and go in peace.
Show us how through care and goodness
Fear will die and hope increase.
Fear will die and hope increase.

VERSE 3

You, Creator God, have written

Your great name on humankind;
For our growing in Your likeness
Bring the life of Christ to mind;
That by our response and service
Earth its destiny may find.
Earth its destiny may find.

ISAIAH 61:1-2 (NRSV)

The spirit of the Lord God is upon
me, because the Lord has anointed
me; he has sent me to bring good
news to the oppressed, to bind up
the brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the captives, and release to
the prisoners; 2to proclaim the year
of the Lords favor, and the day of
vengeance of our God; to comfort all
who mourn;
1

LUKE 4:18-19 (NRSV)

The Spirit of the Lord is upon
me, because he has anointed me to
bring good news to the poor. He has
sent me to proclaim release to the
captives and recovery of sight to the
blind, to let the oppressed go free,
19
to proclaim the year of the Lords
favor.

Sermon Title: The Gospel According to FENCES

Scripture: Psalm 51:1-5; 10

The movie, FENCES, based on the stage play by August

Wilson, tells the story of Troy Maxson, a good man who
is haunted by his past. Not unlike David, he is a decent
man who has committed indecent acts. This message is for
every good man and every good woman who loves God,
but has made ungodly
decisions. As a result,
fences were built that
kept out love and kept
in patterns of hurt.
Psalm 51 is a fencedestroying Psalm.

the Bible tell us about such a time as this? Where do go as a community: Despair, retreat, flight, resist, or
wait? This biblical lesson will give the listener key strategies to live in a post-Obama world and provide the
biblical teaching to answer critics, fight off cynics, and be a part of a new movement of moral courage and
spirit-led justice.

An Invitation from Mrs. Monica B. Moss
Growing up in Central Florida in the 1980s, I had the pleasure of a front row seat to the NASA
Space Shuttle Program. It literally took shape, and eventually, flight, in my own back yard. I can
remember so clearly the indescribable excitement that accompanied each countdown and liftoff
of a space shuttle launch. Having a father who was a NASA Video Systems and Electrical Engineer
allowed me the opportunity to experience, firsthand, the power and pride of shuttle launches at
Cape Canaveral, Florida. Each time I had the opportunity to sit in the bleachers to watch a shuttle
blast into space, I was filled with pride and inspired by the scientists and engineers who made
space travel possible.
Fortunately, I knew three African American engineers at NASA, but none of them were women. I
never considered African American women being a part of the space industry! Yet, after showing
promise as a high school student and because of my proximity to Kennedy Space Center, I was
afforded a NASA scholarship to attend Spelman College as a Women in Science and Engineering
(W.I.S.E.) Scholar, one of the most meaningful and transformative experiences of my life and
nothing but the move of God.
However, even as close as I was to the space program and as supported as I was at home and
by Spelman College, I was never told the story of three powerful and brilliant African American
women who collaborated to make significant contributions to the American Space Program. I can
only imagine the sense of pride and confidence I would have demonstrated, not only at NASA
installations during my summer internships, but also in the classroom, had I known of the hidden
figures who had forged a path for me to follow.
In the spirit of the brilliance and bravery of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary
Jackson, an exceptionally brilliant team of African American women whose talents and gifts made
space travel and a safe return home possible, I invite you to join me, along with the Endeleo
Corporation for a viewing of the film, Hidden Figures.
Let us take this time to pay homage to three remarkable sisters who have been elevated from the
shadows of history to inspire an entire generation to never give up on their dreams and to operate
in their God-given gifts and talents. This inspirational story will bless and benefit the entire family
- our daughters and our sons. I look forward to seeing you there on Monday, January 16th.
God bless,
Monica B. Moss

PARTICIPATE IN SUGARLESS WEDNESDAYS
January 18, 25
February 1, 8, 15, 22
March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Did you know that one 20 oz. soda contains more
sugar than 6 glazed doughnuts, 18 cookies, or 2
bags of chocolate candy?

The State of Illinois and the American Heart Association have launched
SUGARLESS WEDNESDAYS, a statewide initiative for every Wednesday in
the first quarter of 2017. Sugarless Wednesday doesnt mean sugar free, it
simply means no sugary drinks (soda and juices), candy, cookies, cakes, and
pies.
African Americans and Hispanics disproportionately suffer from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. These diseases are associated with excessive
sugar consumption.
We encourage people to sign the online pledge for "Sugarless Wednesdays"
in a bid to improve their health. Making the change only one day a week
for the first three months of the year is a way to ease into what the Heart
Association hopes is a lifelong change. For information, contact Deacon
Jiles Taylor-George, RN, Faith Community Nurse, 773-966-1558 or email jtgeorge@trinitychicago.org, or visit www.AmericanHeartAssociation.org.

Sound the Trumpets
The transfer of power at the Presidential level recently struck
an unfamiliar chord. Talladega College, the historically Black
college in Alabama, will send its marching band to perform in
the January 20th presidential inaugural parade in Washington,
D.C.

However, as first reported in the New York Times, Mr. Hawkins

issued a statement saying that the 58th presidential inauguration
is bigger than any president, even a polarizing one. He noted
that the festivities have more to do with the civil celebration of
the transfer of power than a political event. Be that as it may,
the controversy has stirred emotional responses and has split students, alumni, and the small town of
nearly 15,000.
Recently, in on this page, the Endeleo Institute ran its announcement for the 2017 Spring Break HBCU
Bus Tour to the State of Alabama. Talladega College, a school long affiliated with the United Church
of Christ, is among the seven colleges listed on the tour; the irony lies in the fact that enrollment in
Black colleges has soared of late, due in large part to racial tensions at predominantly white institutions
across the country and the preference among black students (and their parents) to attend schools with
more black faculty and staff, and an environment conducive to freer expression.
Of course, for decades the Trinity Higher Education Corporation (THEC) program has been a strong
supporter of HBCUs through its bus tours and college fairs, including our most recent collaborative
event in partnership with the United Negro College Fund this past October. With THEC firmly under
the Endeleo Education umbrella, we envision exciting new opportunities to enlighten young people
at the elementary level about HBCUs as viable alternatives, particularly for first generation college
students. Say what you will about the inauguration, but attending Talladega means receiving a worldclass education in civic engagement that will help shape their politics. Isnt that exactly what we need?
For more information about our Spring Break Bus Tour, please contact Carole Jacobs at cajacobs@
trinitychicago.org or call 773-966-1583. Registration packets are available ONLY on our website: www.

The decision by the universitys president, Billy Hawkins, to

send the universitys Marching Tornadoes was, at the very
least, highly controversial, in light of the president-elect and
the national outcry over how an institution founded by newlyfreed slaves 150 years ago would seemingly betray its own core
values.

grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with
power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your
hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded
in love. 18I pray that you may have the power to comprehend,
with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height
and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses
knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of
God.

3rd Quarter Theme: Growing in Holiness

July - 2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us

purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and
spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

August - Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed
